Yeovil Town succumbed to a heavy defeat at Huish Park this evening, as Premier League Swansea City showed their class in a 5-0 scoreline. The Welsh side tended to hold the upper hand during much of the match, but took apart the Glovers during the final 30 minutes of the match, after a much tighter opening hour.
They took the lead when Spanish striker Michu was able to take advantage of some charitable defending. Seth Nana Omuri-Twumasi was playing in the right-back slot, and he was out-muscled in a challenge with Jonjo Shelvey, who threaded the ball through to Pablo Hernandez, with his pass to Michu allowing the player the space to finish into the bottom corner.
The Glovers finished the first half strongly, and could count themselves unlucky to not have an equaliser, when Kevin Dawson forced Michel Vorm into an outstanding save just before the break - one of several strong bits of goalkeeping he displayed during the evening to ensure the Glovers drew blank - Paddy Madden was another denied as the half time whistle blew.
That same pattern continued early in the second period, as Vorm bettered his first half collection of saves, turning a Sam Foley effort away. But just as Marek Stech won Yeovil Town many victories with saves at crucial points in games, Vorm's contribution to thwarting Yeovil's head of steam proved to be significant. Just past the hour mark, and some superb Swansea passing saw Hernandez and Pozuelo combine before Nathan Dyer converted with an easy tap-in and a 2-0 scoreline.
Swansea went on to dominate the match, as their substitutes proved more effective than Yeovil's. One of those, in Wayne Routledge, weaved his way into the box for Pablo Hernandez to convert from 10 yards out. Then four minutes later Hernandez turned provider, allowing Rory Donnelly the chance to slam the ball into the top corner in emphatic fashion.
There was time for one more goal, as the impressive Alejandro Pozuelo was picked out by Angel Rangel with another low cross into the box which the Glovers didn't deal with. It perhaps produced a flattering margin, but as was the pattern of Tuesday night's Torquay match, the opposition seemed to gain more from the mass of substitutions than the Glovers did. Manager Gary Johnson will inevitably need to ponder that fact, even if the gulf in class between the two sides on the night wasn't quite so surprising.
