10 August 2005 : Goalless, but the signs are encouraging
|
Yeovil Town and Rotherham United battled away for a goalless draw at Huish Park last night, both sides cancelling each other out in a fast-paced, absorbing contest. This was the Glovers first home game in League One and the vociferous crowd of 5,856 made the most of the occasion, giving the home team some excellent backing.
Gary Johnson made three changes to the team which lost 2-0 at Oldham on Saturday; Chris Weale coming in for Steve Collis in goal, Matt Harrold making his competitive debut up front in place of Arron Davies, and Kevin Gall replacing David Poole on the right side of midfield; the three replaced dropping to the bench.
If there was a big step up in class between the Conference and League Two then the differences between Leagues Two and One may be even more pronounced, at least on the evidence of this game. The visitors were quick, strong and sharp in the tackle, leaving the Yeovil players no time on the ball at all - a very different proposition from the team that we beat so relatively comfortably in the FA Cup at Millmoor last January. A little too often in the first half it was the Millers who were winning their headers and the 50/50 balls with Yeovil a slight second-best in all departments. On the plus side the Glovers defense looked strong, the only real alarms coming from some long-range shots which Weale dealt with well and a near self-inflicted wound when the Yeovil keeper carelessly lost the ball to former Reading striker Martin Butler near the corner flag - fortunately the Millers frontman shot hit the side-netting from a narrow angle. 0-0 at half-time, but the Glovers were coming under more and more pressure and it was looking slightly ominous.
The second half was a different story. Yeovil came out buzzing, found the tempo of the match from the off and raised it a notch. This time it was our lads winning their headers, our lads putting their bodies on the line for the 50/50 balls and our lads putting the visitors under pressure. The only criticism that could be made was that too often the final ball was simply not of the quality required, whether from set-pieces or from open play, but that is something that can and doubtless will be worked on in training. The important point was that we looked liked we belonged out there with a decent League One side and that there was plenty of improvement still to come. Not that it was all plain sailing in the second half - a terrific Chris Weale double-save kept the Glovers in the match late on in the game - but, what more do you want? A gorgeous summer evening, a clean sheet and our first point in this division with the promise of an home game against Blackpool to come on Saturday - it doesn't get much better than this, and it's never been a better time to be a Yeovil Town supporter. Carpe diem baby!
Match report: Yeovil Town 0 - 0 Rotherham United.
Club captain Terry Skiverton was forced off with a hip injury late in the second half last night, but it's hoped he'll be fit for Saturday. "His hip is very sore," Gary Johnson told the after-match press conference last night, adding: "But people have got to put their bodies on the line at this level. If we are going to keep progressing that is what we have to do. That is why you've got to be proud of the boys who put their bodies on the line today."
Last night's point means the Glovers are off the bottom of the early league table and have reached the dizzy heights of 22nd - 2 places below Saturday's opponents Blackpool, who gained their first point of the season last night with a creditable 2-2 draw at fancied Tranmere. Early pace-setters in the division with 2 wins out of 2 are Oldham - who of course beat us 2-0 at Boundary Park on Saturday - Walsall and old friends, well, 2 seasons-old friends, Swansea City, who have made a superb start to life in the higher league, beating Tranmere at the New Stadium and then Colchester away last night. Very, very early days as yet however....
