Further to yesterday's news concerning trialist defender Aaron Downes, it can now be confirmed that he has left Yeovil Town. As expected, League Two side Torquay United were the club offering him a firm contract, and they have now confirmed that the 27 year old has signed a one year deal at Plainmoor.
Gulls boss Martin Ling has said that he feels that he is more likely to offer the former Chesterfield and Bristol Rovers player regular first team football, telling their club website:
"I watched him play for Yeovil in pre-season and they wanted to take him, but as a cover player rather than a starter. I've told Aaron I'm looking for a left-sided centre-half and he has played 90% of his football in that position, even though he is right-footed. He is just signing the paperwork and will be with us at training this morning before watching (Torquay's pre-season friendly) tonight."
The news of Downes' departure means that manager Gary Johnson may turn his attention elsewhere for defensive cover. Oxford City defender James Clarke was an option, but he picked up an injury and so is not currently on the radar, but feasibly could be an alternative option at some stage.
As for tonight, the Glovers will send a first team squad to Dorchester Town, whilst the Under-18s side travel to Crediton United. As such, the club's full set of professionals and scholars will be in action at one venue or another, with obviously the main body of experience appearing at the Avenue Stadium.
