As we reach the end of the 2011-12 season, and prepare to roll over into the 2012-13 campaign, one or two more dates for your diary are starting to filter through. One of the unprecedented features of the coming season is that Yeovil Town's first fixture is likely to be in a cup competition. Despite the season kicking off later than usual due to the London 2012 Olympics, the Carling Cup First Round will be more or less in the same spot as before, and so will be your first chance to see the team in competitive action. The Olympics will run from July 27th until August 12th with the Carling Cup commencing almost the day after the athletes depart the country.
Due to the 2012-13 season being squeezed both by the Olympics and by the League One and League Two play-off finals being brought forward a week to allow Wembley Stadium to host the Champions League Final in May 2013, there will be a couple of extra midweek fixtures inserted. What this means is that a team that progresses through the first couple of rounds of the Carling Cup and the Football League Trophy could end up playing as many as 17 matches during the opening 59 days of the season. There is only one entirely empty midweek period during the opening nine weeks of the season; scheduled for mid-September.
The Football League Trophy is scheduled to commence during the week commencing September 3rd. As the Glovers obtained a bye during the 2011-12 First Round draw, this means that they will definitely not receive a bye in this season's draw.
