9 March 2012 : Officials For Oldham Athletic vs Yeovil Town
Officials for tomorrow's League One match between Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town have been published by the Football League. The match takes place at Boundary Park on Saturday 10th March with a 3.00p.m. kick-off. The man in charge will be Jock Waugh (South Yorkshire).

We've only seen Mr Waugh twice before as a match referee. We first saw him in the middle on the final day of the 2010-11 season, where he took charge of the match against Carlisle United at Brunton Park. Just to prove that we don't spend our time massacring officials, it should be noted that we actually praised him during this match - it was his advantage waved, when he gave Shaun MacDonald the freedom to keep going after a bad tackle, with his eventual pass through to Jonathan Obika giving Yeovil the opening goal of the game.

We're not sure if Carlisle fans will be quite as sympathetic towards him, given that he later waved away penalty appeals that they had just moments before the Glovers doubled their lead, for the final 2-0 scoreline. Danny Livesey and Jonathan Obika tangled in the box, and when the ball broke, Yeovil got their second on the counter-attack. However, Carlisle's site doesn't make too much of an issue of that, feeling more aggrieved that Waugh accidentally got in the way of Liam Noble's pass that broke up Carlisle's pressure on the Yeovil penalty box. Overall, the Western Gazette considered that Waugh had "a good, sensible afternoon. Did well to allow Shaun MacDonald to continue his run for Jon Obika's goal."

We then had him earlier this season for the September 2011 match against Tranmere Rovers. Our match report in the 0-0 draw describes him as "largely letting the game flow without interruption throughout" - exactly what supporters like to see in a referee. The Western Gazette goes further, saying that it was "a superb performance from the official who allowed the game to flow with common sense. Could have sent off two players in the dying seconds, but sensibly opted for a stern words rather than cards" referring to a spot of handbags between Gavin Williams and Tranmere's Mustafa Tiryaki.

Other than those matches, we had Mr Waugh as a Fourth Official, back in April 2009 in our away match at Stockport County, memorable only for how unmemorable the awful 0-0 draw at Edgeley Park was. He was promoted to the Football League's referee's list during the summer that followed, but we've only had him the once since then. He claims that he got into refereeing when "my next door neighbour used to drag me out of bed on Sundays because they couldn’t get a referee".

Mr Waugh will be assisted by Jonathan Hunt (Liverpool) and Paul Thompson (Chesterfield). The Fourth Official will be Gordon Johnson (Liverpool).
