Yeovil Town Reserves crashed out of the Somerset Premier Cup this evening at the Quarter-Final stages. A single goal from Ashley Kington was enough to seal their fate, scored for Clevedon Town in the second minute of the match. Both sides landing the ball in the net during the first half, only to find the officials disallowing the goals, but the home side carved out the majority of the chances, and deserved to go through to the next stages.
The Glovers chose a squad for tonight's game fronted by Head of Youth Scott Green - not unreasonable given that eleven out of the sixteen players selected were part of his Centre of Excellence side. Only goalkeeper Gareth Stewart, left-back Curtis Haynes-Brown, right-winger Billy Gibson and attacking midfielder Anthony Edgar had Glovers first team experience, with Michael Woods selected for his first outing in the green'n'white.
The match was ultimately settled with the first chance of the game, with Ashley Kington driving a 25 yard shot past Gareth Stewart with barely 90 seconds on the clock. The home side settled the best with Clevedon's Bristol City loanee Henry Muggeridge striking the post as they threatened to double the lead.
Both sides had the ball in the net, with Melchi Emanuel-Williamson having his 'goal' ruled out for his handball in the build-up, whilst Henry Muggeridge was ruled offside when he popped up from a rebound shot that was saved. But Clevedon went in at the break with a single goal lead that was a little too comfortable for the non-league side.
The second period saw Yeovil carve out a few notable chances to get back into the match, with a Billy Gibson free kick being palmed away by the home keeper, whilst Michael Woods produced good interchange with Corey King to carve out a good chance for the former Chelsea man that was saved. But overall Yeovil struggled to carve out chances on a difficult pitch, and as the fog came down, so did their interest in this season's County Cup, with Clevedon deservedly taking their interest in the competition through to the semi-finals.
