Officials for the League One clash between Rochdale and Yeovil Town have been announced. The match takes place on Saturday 17th December with a 3.00p.m. kick-off at Spotland and is the Glovers final match before Christmas. The man in charge will be referee Chris Sarginson (Staffordshire).
Mr Sarginson is relatively new to Football League refereeing, having been promoted in the summer of 2008. We had him twice during the 2008-09 season with the first being November 2008's 0-1 home defeat against Peterborough United. We were a little unimpressed by Mr Sarginson's handling of the game, where six players got booked, but where a firmer grip on some of the earlier action might have stopped the game from boiling over at various points. In the end the only surprise was that both sides kept 11 players on the pitch.
Later that same season, we had him for a home match against Milton Keynes Dons in March 2009. Perhaps our attention was swayed a little with three new loan signings in the side on that day, but the match referee doesn't get a mention in our match report, bar the fact that he awarded us a fairly clear-cut penalty. Sadly, we didn't convert it.
More recently, we had him for the August 2009 Tuesday night match against Exeter City that ended up in a 1-1 draw at St James Park. Just the one booking that night, which we had no complaints about, and a good unfussy performance.
Our latest match involving him came earlier this season with the 2-2 draw against Colchester United. Here he did us a bit of a favour - chalking off a goal for the home side after Steven Gillespie was ruled to have fouled Glovers keeper Jed Steer when putting the ball into the net. Not too surprisingly, the Essex club were less than delighted about the decision; Gillespie said after the game:
"Keepers get protection, everyone knows that. I had a bit of leverage with the arms, but I thought it was a goal. I was up and away to celebrate. Even a couple of their lads after the game said they didn’t see anything wrong with that."
The Western Gazette had a somewhat different view of Mr Sarginson's performance, saying that their main grumble was the six yellow cards - four against Yeovil - that he dished out saying that he "gave a number of soft free kicks and yellow cards but was largely spot on with his decisions."
As an assistant referee, he has waved the flag at an FA Vase Final, a Football League Play-Off Final and a UEFA Cup tie. As a referee, his biggest game was to take charge of the Conference Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg tie between Torquay United and Exeter City.
Mr Sarginson will be assisted by Ian Hussin (Liverpool) and Paul Marsden (Lancashire). The Fourth Official will be Christopher Kavanagh (Lancashire).
