Yeovil Town Under-18s went out of the Youth Alliance League Cup, as a Cheltenham Town team narrowly won through to the Third Round stage at Alvington this morning. Two second half goals from the Robins was enough to see the win through, despite Tommy Smith grabbing a goal that threatened a late comeback for the Glovers.
They went into the game missing the injured trio of Jonny Kaye, Taran Singh Jheeta and Will Gordon, plus Josh Doyle was serving a suspension on his birthday following his red card in the FA Youth Cup match at Farnborough from a couple of weeks ago. It was a goalless first half with the Glovers playing a high pressure, high tempo game, with players clearly up for the battle, but they struggled to create the final ball that would seriously threaten the Cheltenham goal.
The second period continued in much the same way, with Adam Cleary landing in the book for dissent, whilst Mitch Brundle took the same route via a two footed tackle that thankfully didn't connect with his opponent. Sandwiched between a series of second half substitutions, Cheltenham grabbed the lead in controversial circumstances - their opening goal looking distinctly offside, but with the officials making the decision to not intervene. They then doubled their lead shortly afterwards, as the Yeovil defence lost their markers, with the Robins converting at the back post to make it 2-0.
One of Yeovil's substitutes to enter the field was Under-16s player Tommy Smith, who recently scored for the Reserves in their win at Shepton Mallet, and he continued to show his promise at this level. Whilst Smith's goal at Shepton was a long range blaster, this time he used his head, nodding in from six yards to set up a late finale. George Russell was introduced as a final substitution in an attempt to pull the game level, but Cheltenham hung on, and found their way into the Third Round, via a 2-1 scoreline.
