Yeovil Town secured an impressive win over Farnborough in the FA Youth Cup tonight, to secure their route into the Second Round. The Under-18s set up a tie with Charlton Athletic in a match that will be played at The Valley later this month, after they beat their Hampshire opponents 3-1 at Cherrywood Road.
The Glovers got off to a flyer - chaos from a corner resulting in Melchi Emanuel-Williamson stabbing the ball home from close range in the second minute to produce an early lead. They looked to build on that lead, and Jonny Kaye left Farnborough's goalkeeper stranded as he struck a fierce 25 yard shot that the home keeper didn't even move for.
Yeovil doubled their lead midway through the half, when Lloyd Matthews scored somewhat against the run of play, and despite the Yellows appealing in vain for a handball decision that didn't go their way. The home side certainly contributed to a competitive first half, in which three players landed in the book, and where goalkeeper Matt Cafer had to make a number of strong saves.
The second period opened in the same way as the first did - with a goal from a corner, only this time it went to the home side. Farnborough striker James Newbie grabbed a free header in the box, and suddenly the home side were back in the match. A scuffle following the goal perhaps showed how competitive the game was getting, and Yeovil would need to dig deep.
The crucial goal game though, around 65 minutes into the match when former Fulham academy striker Melchi Emanuel-Williamson burst through with a powerful run, lifting the ball over the keeper to restore Yeovil's two goal advantage, and put his side on their way towards the second round.
But there was still time for one last twist, with full-back Josh Doyle picking up two quick second half bookings, leaving Yeovil a defender short, and down to ten men. The Glovers reshuffled tactically, moving Melchi Emanuel-Williamson back into defence, and bringing on Corey King as they played out with a 4-3-2. King and Lloyd Matthews even had chances to extend the lead, as Farnborough pushed men forward, pressing well, but getting caught out on the break by the strike duo.
However, the home side couldn't breach the Yeovil defence, with keeper Matt Cafer performing well, despite aggravating a pre-match ankle injury during the match. He was still able to save everything that Farnborough threw at him, but was forced to delegate goal kicks to his team-mates as he played through the pain barrier.
Next stop is Charlton Athletic, and hopefully a chance for the Glovers to savour a match at The Valley.
