The Female Glovers will be looking to start another epic cup run as they take on Isle of Wight's Shanklin Town in the FA Women's Cup at Sherborne on Sunday. Memories are still burning strong of the superb run in the competition two seasons ago, where great victories over Saltash United, Forest Green Rovers and Newquay saw the girls thrust into the third round.
The squad then travelled up to East Anglia where they overturned Norwich City following a superb 3-1 victory, before taking on the might of National Premier League Nottingham Forest in round four. Yeovil lost out 1-0 that day, but impressed a big crowd at Somerton with fine performance. Like the menís club, Yeovil Town Ladies have a fine tradition in FA Cup, and will be looking to enhance this on Sunday against Shanklin with a win to take them through to the first round proper in the competition.
"I could say that Sunday will be just another cup match for us, one of a few that we have had in recent weeks," joint manager Nigel Williams said this morning. "But this is the FA Cup, so it is a bit special.
"The league will always be our priority, but it is important that we do well in the FA Cup, not only for financial reasons, but we also want the opportunity to enhance the name of this club. And if we can progress further in the competition we will have the chance to play teams higher up the pyramid, and therefore increase the experience of our young squad."
Shanklin Ladies operate in the Southern Region Women's Football League, and are presently in second place, having won five of their seven league matches this season. This is a league just one level below the South West Combination, and is where the University of Portsmouth played last season. This will be no easy contest for the Glovers, although they will feel themselves favourites to go through.
"It is all very well dreaming of the glory of a cup run," Williams said. "But we have to keep our feet planted firmly on the ground, and focus on the job at hand, which is this Sundayís game. Shanklin play in the league below us, but they are not turning up just to make up the numbers. They will fancy their chances of a bit of giant killing, and we have to be on our guard to prevent this from happening.
"Having lost just once this season, they are obviously a good side, so we will come into the game with a professional attitude, looking to put in a good performance. We have been training hard all week, and are ready for the game. We know what we have to do, and we know that we are capable of getting the result. We will be looking for each player to play their part in a top-notch team performance, and give the supporters the result they deserve."
Yeovil Town Ladies take on Shanklin Ladies this Sunday 13 November at Raleigh Grove in Sherborne, the match kicking off an hour earlier than usual at 1.00p.m. The ground will be open two hours previous to that, with refreshments and full bar facilities available to supporters. Admission prices are £2.00 for adults and £1.00 to concessions.
Please come and support the girls.
