11 October 2011 : Chainey Strike Guides Glovers Past Keynsham
Yeovil Town Reserves needed a single goal to secure their route into the Second Round of the Somerset Premier Cup this evening. A second half Aidan Chainey goal was enough to earn them a visit to Shepton Mallet for the second stage in a game that threatened to go through to extra time until the midfielder struck from the edge of the box.

The Glovers selected a side that contained just three professional players, and only one with any first team experience. Defensive midfielder Flavien Belson took to the field as the most senior player, whilst winger Abdulai Bell-Baggie and the versatile Rob Clowes provided the trio of first team squad members, with the remainder being made up from the club's Centre of Excellence side, more used to playing youth team football.

In a match being played on the brand new Crown Field 3G artificial surface, Glovers first team manager Terry Skiverton had said in the lead-up to the match that he was reluctant to include any of his professional players to play on an unfamiliar surface. That decision appeared to be vindicated when after a few tasty tackles and a frentic start of few chances, midfielder Jonny Kaye went down with a nasty injury. Kaye had to be replaced by Will Gordon, with the former on his way to hospital to have his injury seen to.

Rob Clowes, who started the match playing as a striker in a 4-4-2, but after the substitution found himself playing as the lynchpin in a 4-5-1 with Flavien Belson as a holding midfielder, was to have two great chances on either side of half time. One forced a strong save from the Keynsham keeper, whilst another saw him clear the crossbar from close range when he really should have hit the target.

The game was won though, by an excellent piece of work on the wing by substitute Will Gordon. He found Aidan Chainey on the edge of the box, and the midfielder swept the ball home to break the deadlock, and put the Glovers 1-0 up. Keynsham, who had shown a competitive edge throughout the match, weren't quite finished as they struck the crossbar only a few minutes after the goal, with the ball rebounding out for a throw-in, such was the power in the shot. However, the Glovers hung on for the win, and a route through to the second round.
