Yeovil Town Under-18s got themselves off to a cracking start to their 2011-12 season this morning in Alvington as they thrashed their Hereford United counterparts. In a one-sided encounter the Glovers won their opening fixture at Alvington by a 9-2 scoreline, as four first half goals were added to by five more in the second period with former Fulham academy player Melchi Emanuel-Williamson grabbing a hat-trick in the rout.
In a match watched by first year professionals Lewis Clarke, Rob Clowes and Rhys Baggridge, who joined in with the team warm-ups, the scoring opened when Melchi Emanuel-Williamson took advantage of a fumble by the Bulls keeper, who knocked the ball over the line from close range.
Will Gordon could have put the Glovers 2-0 up, but instead it was Hereford who quickly equalised, taking advantage of some sleepy defending to put the Bulls level, with their No.9 finishing well. However, this was a false dawn for the visitors, with Aidan Chainey latching onto a defence splitting pass from Lloyd Matthews, putting the Glovers back ahead midway through the half.
Next, Will Gordon got himself on the scoresheet, netting from 25 yards out as he slammed the ball home on his left foot, as he came in from the right wing to shoot. Gordon then hit the crossbar, with both Lloyd Matthews and Johnny Kaye having chances to turn the loose ball home, as Kaye's shot went wide of the target. But just before the break, Johnny Kaye made it 4-1, as he struck from 12 yards out, with the ball squirming under the keepers body and into the back of the net.
Into the second half, and Yeovil did not take their foot off the pedal, as Melchi Emanuel-Williamson grabbed his second and Yeovil's fifth of the morning; poking the ball past the advancing Bulls keeper and into the back of the net. Then the striker turned provider, giving Lloyd Matthews the chance to make it 6-1.
Defender Mitch Brundle then powered home a header from a corner, with 20 minutes still to go in the game. 7-1 then became 8-1 as Yeovil launched a counter-attack, and Lloyd Matthews repaid the earlier favour, slipping the ball through to Melchi Emanuel-Williamson to allow the Londoner the chance for a hat-trick. He didn't disappoint.
There was still time for Will Gordon to polish things off with his second of the match and a 9-1 lead, and although Hereford did get a late second goal for a 9-2 final scoreline, they were by that time not in the mood to celebrate it. A great start to the season for the Centre of Excellence side, and one that will leave everyone involved buzzing. Given that they achieved it without new boys Tobias Iriah and Ohimai Longe, who are awaiting their registration papers to be completed, there will be more strength and depth in the Yeovil squad in the matches to come.
