Two second half goals from striker Kirk Jackson helped Yeovil Town overcome a first half deficit to beat Margate 2-1 at Dover's Crabble Stadium yesterday, in the process helping the Glovers take a massive step towards securing this season's Conference championship title and automatic promotion to the Football League.
Yes, this result was as important as that! With most of our main rivals either losing or drawing yesterday the Glovers are now 14 points clear at the top of the table and with 6 games left to play need only 8 points from the remaining fixtures to be mathematically impossible to catch. The fat lady hasn't entered the stage and began to sing yet, but she's beginning her warm-up routine in the dressing-room. The run-in to the end of the season for the leading contenders is online here.
Nothing should be taken for granted yet however - and yesterday's opponents Margate made Gary Johnson's men sweat when Jean-Michel Sigere put the home side into an 11th minute lead. The Glovers cause was helped by the second half dismissal of Margate's John Keister for a second bookable offence, though the inconsistent and fussy official Mr Tomlinson was exasperating both sets of fans with his idiosyncratic approach to the laws of the game. However Yeovil took full advantage of their extra numbers with that man Kirk Jackson popping up in the 73rd and 80th minutes to take his goal tally to 19 Conference goals this season and to push the Glovers that little bit closer to the holy grail of the Football League.
