Officials for Yeovil Town's home League One match against Rochdale have been announced. The match takes place at Huish Park on Saturday 22nd January with a 3.00p.m. kick-off. The man in charge will be Danny McDermid (Hampshire).
Considering he lives fairly locally, it's surprising to note that we've only had Mr McDermid twice since his promotion to the Football League's referees list in the summer of 2006. Part of that is due to him not being involved at all during the 2008-09 season, although we've not even had him since then.
After a few games where he was an assistant, his first match in charge was the October 2006 home match against Oldham Athletic. No complaints then about his performance - in fact not even a mention. So why does his name seem oddly familiar?
Ah, yes. The Boxing Day 2007 home match against Swindon Town. Mr McDermid was the referee who sent off Terry Skiverton after an alleged off the ball incident involving Robins striker Barry Corr. McDermid did not see the incident himself, but chose to rely upon the evidence of an assistant who was 60 yards from play. Not even the Cowlin Stand linesman - far closer to the incident had seen what went on, and unfortunately neither did the TV cameras, and Skivo was banned for three matches, whilst Corr, who was already on a yellow card, stayed on the field, having already scored the winning goal.
We weren't particularly happy with Mr McDermid's general performance throughout the game and in the match report said that he "had an awful game throughout but the decision to red card Skiverton lost him any remaining credibility he might have had with the Yeovil faithful".
As an aside, Mr McDermid was during that season charged by the Football Association under claims that he had sworn at Leeds United manager Dennis Wise. In a match against Gillingham, McDermid sent off two Leeds players, as well as banishing Wise himself to the stands, but there were allegations that the match referee had sworn at Wise upon the final whistle. He was eventually cleared two months after the match, with Wise himself being fined and suspended for his role in the row.
Mr McDermid will be assisted by Stephen Daly (Middlesex) and Adam Nunn (Wiltshire). The Fourth Official will be Mark Russell (Gloucestershire).
