A date and opposition for Darren Way's Benefit Match has been set. The opposition will be Premier League runners-up Manchester United, who will be sending a squad down to Somerset on Saturday, 24th July. Kick-off will be 3.00p.m.
This morning's BBC Somerset sports bulletin does not at this stage indicate what sort of line-up will grace the Huish Park turf - we'll doubtless hear more in the days and weeks leading up to the game. Manchester United's main first team squad are on tour in the USA and Canada around that period, and so the manager in charge of the game will be Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who manages their Reserve Team. However, with the World Cup likely to involve a large proportion of their squad, exactly who comes back needing treatment or in need of a rest back home may determine which players head where.
However, the main focus on the day, will not be the opposition, but Darren himself, who made 274 appearances for Yeovil Town across three spells between 2000 and 2008. Now First Team Coach at Huish Park, his career was cut short by a road traffic accident in December 2008 at the age of 29.
Having been a key part of Yeovil Town's FA Trophy, Conference National and League Two winning sides, this match will finally close down Darren's playing career - we've little doubt that although Darren will be unable to play a serious part in the match, that he will be making a cameo appearance at some point in the match, just as he did last July in Terry Skiverton's testimonial.
More on this will follow over the next month or two, as we get it.
