Match officials for Yeovil Town's home match against Leeds United later today (Monday) have been announced. The man in charge will be referee Kevin Wright (Cambridgeshire). Despite him being based in the south, we've only had him sporadically during our time in the Football League.
The last meeting was for the October 2008 away match against Northampton Town. We lost 3-0 and we had a bit of a minor grumble about the award of the free kick that led to the opening goal, believing the referee had been fooled by a Cobblers player, but there were few complaints we could have about the sending off of Terrell Forbes in the second period, or the final scoreline.
Prior to that match, you have to go all the way back to the 2003-04 season, where we had Mr Wright for two matches in his debut season at Football League level. Both matches saw him have to make big decisions. At the September 2003 fixture, he seemed to have a pretty competent game, with even many rather partisan Doncaster Rovers fans at Belle Vue seeing an elbow by Leo Fortune-West late on as worthy of a red card - preferring to take it out on their errant striker than the match official.
We weren't too happy with Mr Wright in the next meeting though, even if - like the Doncaster game - it ended with a 1-0 win away from home. His second half performance saw him take the easy option on three penalty decisions - two for Yeovil and one for Kidderminster Harriers - yet on the 4th penalty appeal, when Harriers striker John Williams took a fall inside the box, Mr Wright pointed to the spot, and it's probably fair to say that one half of the Ciderspace editorial team was just a touch displeased with the decision and with Mr Williams. Thankfully Chris Weale pulled off a rare penalty save and we all went home happy.
Mr Wright will be assisted by Andrew Rodda (Devon) and Mark Russell (Gloucestershire). The Fourth Official will be Simon Hooper (Wiltshire) who incidentally is also a registered Football League referee - an upgrade to the usual choice of Fourth Officials selected by the League.
