Former Yeovil Town player Arthur Stenner has passed away at the age of 76. Mr Stenner had suffered from dementia and heart problems for a period of more than 10 years, and had his roots in Yeovil all his life. He died on March 11th 2010.
He was born in Yeovil on January 7th 1934 and educated at Stoke (Stanchester) School and played for Somerset boys before turning professional at the age of 17 and being signed up by manager Harry Lowe. He made only seven appearances for Yeovil Town, scoring one goal across the 1951-52 and 1952-53 seasons before returning in the 1957-58 season, scoring once and making four appearances under Jimmy Baldwin. In between he did his National Service and then had spells with Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle, Norwich City, Exeter City and Oldham Athletic.
Whilst his footballing career may have not left too much of a dent on Yeovil Town fans' memories, his career off the field became well known as A.W. Stenner and Sons - a Removal and Storage business based in Armoury Road in the Lufton Trading Estate, yards from Huish Park. Son Martin Stenner spoke to the Western Daily Press today and added:
"Dad was a very good family man, and he loved talking to people. He would feel comfortable talking to the Queen or a tramp, and he would treat them the same. He would go out of his way to help someone and loved his two grandsons, little Martin and William. He became very well known in the trade."
Another son Kevin will be running the New York Marathon in November to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society Charity and hopes to raise £5,000 for the cause. Kevin had already made his decision to run the marathon prior to his father's death.
Arthur is survived by wife Fay, sons Kevin, Martin and Mark, and two grandsons Martin, 12, and William, seven. To them we send our condolences. Arthur's funeral will take place on Wednesday 24th March at 11.00a.m. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Britt at A.W. Stenner and Sons on 01935 476555 or email britt.mk@virgin.net
