Further to this morning's earlier news, it would appear that loan deals for goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and midfielder Shaun MacDonald have been finalised. Yesterday's Sunday Independent newspaper carried reports that the Glovers have now completed the paperwork for both players and that if the Leyton Orient match had gone ahead that Shaun would have played.
One player that hadn't passed his fitness test for inclusion into the squad for Orient was Jean-Paul Kalala. He has had a scan on his knee, and it has not shown up anything serious, but the knock would have kept him out of the weekend game. The size of the Glovers squad has been trimmed down a touch over the past couple of weeks, and the Sunday Independent have stated that the bench would have featured Aidan Downes for the first time this season, who has been working his way back from shoulder and knee injuries. Downes is obviously short of match fitness, but his inclusion in the squad that was due to travel to East London is rather welcome news.
The completion of paperwork for Alex McCarthy means that if Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici has a significant injury, then the Royals would need to issue an explicit loan recall for one of McCarthy or Bristol Rovers keeper Mikkel Andersen. Hopefully given the earlier news from Federici that won't be necessary.
Update: 15:00hrs: The Reading official site have diagnosed Federici's injury as 'severe cramp'. They are therefore confident that he will be fit for next weekend's match against Newcastle United. We'll consider the matter closed for now.
