Yeovil Town goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has become the fourth Glovers player to receive an international call-up for the forthcoming batch of country-based fixtures. The Reading keeper has been included in a 22 man squad to face Portugal at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 14th November with a 12.30p.m. kick-off.
The match clashes with Yeovil's home match against Southend United, meaning that McCarthy could miss that League One match, although previous experience has been that manager Stuart Pearce has tended to release McCarthy early, with fellow goalkeepers Frankie Fielding and Scott Loach tending to be higher up in the pecking order. At present though, Glovers boss Terry Skiverton will need to consider a Plan B, with Richard Martin able to play if McCarthy is held back.
England Under-21s also have an away match in Lithuania on the following Tuesday 17th November, and it would seem likely that, injury permitting, the same squad will be chosen for that fixture. That would mean that McCarthy's ability to play in any potential FA Cup First Round replay against Oxford United would be in doubt, given that both would almost certainly fall on the same night. Shaun MacDonald, Ryan Mason and Steven Caulker are already on international duty during that week, suggesting that a draw would not be the best result for the Glovers this coming Saturday!
The full squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Frankie Fielding (Leeds United - on loan from Blackburn Rovers), Scott Loach (Watford), Alex McCarthy (Yeovil Town - on loan from Reading).
Defenders: Ryan Bertand (Reading - on loan from Chelsea), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Michael Mancienne (Wolves - on loan from Chelsea), Kyle Naughton (Tottenham Hotspur), Micah Richards (Manchester City), James Tomkins (West Ham United), Chris Smalling (Fulham).

Forwards: Andy Carroll (Newcastle United), Zavon Hines (West Ham United), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).
