Officials for Saturday's home match between Yeovil Town and Brentford have been announced. The referee for the match will be Roger East (Wiltshire).
Mr East is a familiar name to Yeovil Town matches, but not so much as a man in the middle. He was promoted to the National referees list for the Football League in 2007 and has covered numerous Glovers matches as an assistant referee and as a fourth official as well as dealing with a few friendlies and Reserve Team matches.
Our experience of him as a referee has been minimal, covering just two Football League matches, but has not been good. He dealt with the February 2008 match againast Southend United that saw the Essex side kick-started by a poor decision outside the box that won them a free kick. We didn't play well on the day, but certainly things like that did not help.
More recently he took charge of the 1-0 win over Swindon Town in March 2009. We may have won the game, but we found a lot of his early decision-making antagonised both crowd and players in a tense local derby where a cool head could have been done with instead. His decision to book Chris Weale for timewasting, then 11 minutes later to book David Noble for taking a free kick too quickly was to say the least odd.
Somehow he also managed to wind up Glovers fans during a pre-season friendly against Bristol City, in July 2008. A dodgy penalty and the lack of an offside award for another goal, along with two bookings being dished out in a friendly and he didn't impress too many that night.
Before everyone despairs at the possibility of another poor official, it should be noted that up until Saturday, referee Tony Bates, who took charge of the match against Southampton at St Mary's had a near unblemished record in Yeovil Town matches. Perhaps Mr East can also reverse his current form in Glovers matches, only in a more positive way?
Mr East will be assisted by John Busby (Oxfordshire) and Adam Watts (Worcestershire). The Fourth Official will be Lee Swabey (Devon).
