Officials for Saturday's home match against Swindon Town have been announced. The man in charge will be the familiar name of Jarnail Singh (Hounslow, Middlesex). There are few officials on the circuit that we don't need to really write a profile for, given how well known they are by Glovers fans. The other would be a Mr T Kettle, but that is for reasons much different to that of Mr Singh.
His star has slipped slightly since the time when he got applauded by Huish Park spectators just for doing his warm-ups before one particular game - when did a referee ever get that sort of reception from a home crowd? His main faux pas came during a home game in the 2007-08 season, when he entirely missed one of the most blatant handballs one will ever see (or in his case, didn't see) when Oldham Athletic switched from football to basketball inside their own penalty area - 19th January, 2008. Perhaps we've scrutinised him a little bit more critically since then, realising that even a good referee is not infallible.
His last two visits came during the 2008-09 season. The first was on 22nd November, 2008, when he had a decent enough match in the 1-0 win over Tranmere Rovers. The most recent was April 2009's 3-4 home defeat against Hartlepool United in which both teams were allowed to play fast flowing football.
This will become the tenth time Mr Singh has been in the middle for Yeovil Town games since joining the National List, with eight league matches at Huish Park and one away F.A. Cup tie his previous occasions. On 3rd January, 2005 he sent off both Colin Miles and Luke Rodgers, then playing for Shrewsbury Town, in separate incidents. Neither player should have had the slightest complaint. The other red issued in these games came on 22nd October, 2005 when Gareth Taylor of Nottingham Forest decided to try to lay out Colin Miles behind the referee's back, but fortunately it was spotted by one of the assistants.
Mr Singh will be assisted by Richard Martin (Somerset) and Andrew Turner (Devon). The Fourth Official will be Chris Powell (Dorset).
