25 July 2006 : The Bartlett Is No More
If the club don't want people stealing their thunder they really need to be more careful. Sticking up an official YTFC notice on the Ticket Office with the new name mentioned in it is not the best way of keeping things under wraps. Having now checked it out to confirm a posting on the Green Room we can go with the news that the Bartlett Stand is indeed becoming the Cowlin Stand. The formal announcement of a new sponsorship deal with South-West building firm Cowlin Construction Ltd is expected later this week.

With Cowlin having a close and long-term sponsorship relationship with League Two club Bristol Rovers we're hoping this implies that the new connection with Yeovil Town is not just a name on a stand, but part of a wider commercial deal for the much talked about development of parts of Huish Park. We may find out more when the sponsorship is officially announced.

25 July 2006 : Delay On Away Shirts?
We hear that the hoped for date for the arrival of the new replica away shirts has slipped. The kit is being manufactured abroad and both production and shipping issues appear to be the problem. Latest predictions are sometime around the end of August, with maybe even into September being mentioned.

It is hoped that at least the team will get a set at an earlier date.

25 July 2006 : Interview With Russell Slade
Glovers boss Russell Slade caught up with BBC Radio Bristol reporter Alistair Durden prior to Friday night's home match against Portsmouth for a much longer than usual chat about the pre-season at Huish Park. 25 July 2006 : The League Paper Relaunch
Following the collapse of The Non-League Paper (for a second time) and its sister publication The League Paper (see Ciderspace 26th June) a rescue package has been put together and the latter is due to be relaunched on 6th August 2006.

However all is not sweetness and light. Many freelance journalists remain unpaid. Colin Mafham, who has written on Yeovil Town quite regularly in the past, said :

I'm extremely disappointed with the manner in which the paper has been run. To go into administration once is unfortunate, to go into it twice is downright unforgivable.

I was foolish enough to allow the bill for my services to run up to more than £7,000, bearing in mind the previous fiasco there, but the message must be there for any young hopefuls not to try making their fortune with this particular regime.

Although several persons on the management team of the publications have already resigned Mafham went on to state that he would not work for the paper again if unnamed others remained in place.

25 July 2006 : Mandatory Two Year Bans Introduced
The Football Association has fallen in to line with many other sporting bodies and today signed up to the UK Sport's National Governing Body agreement, which ties them to the UK national anti-doping policy and in turn the World code.

Up until now each drug offence has been handled independently, with rather random and often very different sanctions applied to those footballers in the English game found guilty. Whilst natural justice would suggest each case should be dealt with on its merits it has produced complaints that the system was too unclear and punishments varied too much, with some feeling hard done by and others presumably secretly relieved they'd escaped lightly.

The agreement brings the FA into line with FIFA, and the worldwide code states a mandatory two-year ban will be imposed on sportspersons found to have been taking performance enhancing drugs. How this will affect those caught taking illegal recreational drugs will have to await clarification from the FA. Some sporting bodies impose the same mandatory two-year ban, others don't.

25 July 2006 : Ishmael Agrees Verbal Deal
Left-winger Ishmael Welsh has verbally agreed a two year contract at Yeovil Town, according to today's Western Daily Press. The 18 year old former West Ham United player has been on trial at the club during pre-season and initially had been offered a one year deal, but it appears that negotiations have doubled the length of that deal. Manager Russell Slade hopes they can put pen to paper on Thursday.

Speaking to the WDP Slade explained: "He is very young and so far I have used him in a way that he has come off the bench and had an impact on the game. That is how I see him in the short term. But he is getting stronger and fitter all the time as he trains regularly with a first-team squad, which he has not done before. There is no fee because he was released by West Ham. We noticed him at the Premiership exit trials where there was a lot of interest in him."

25 July 2006 : Young Glovers Beat Sherborne
Sherborne Town (0) 0 Yeovil Town XI (0) 2
Friendly
Monday 25th July 2006
Attendance 212

In a game that was divided into three periods a very youthful looking Yeovil Town XI came out on top against Toolstation Western League division one newcomers Sherborne Town at Raleigh Grove in front of a crowd of 212.

In an even opening period both sides had 'goals' ruled out, with the hosts the unlucky side on the first occasion. Yeovil Town scored their opening goal in the second of the three periods when Phil Ormerod got behind the 'Sherb' defence to net from eight yards with a clinical finish after fifty minutes. Sherborne boss Martyn Starnes has a side that should hold their own in The Western League this term, and for the Yeovil youngsters this was to prove a notable victory on a very hard pitch.

Yeovil added a second goal when Irishman Stephen Maher picked up a clearance on the edge of the penalty box and rifled a shot high into the corner of the net with ten minutes remaining. Sherborne Town almost reduced the deficit when a last gasp header flashed wide of an upright.

Other players featuring in tonight's game were Oliver Wake, Gary Bowles, Harry Sherwood (new player and son of former Glovers defender Jeff Sherwood), Jake Smeeton, Craig Alcock, Dan O'Brien, Tom Clarke. There were a large number of new faces, including seven trialists who appeared during the final period of the game.
