17 August 2006 : Ladies Romp To Friendly Victory
|
Yeovil Town Ladies demolished Ilminster Town 5-1 in their first pre-season friendly as they tune up for the forthcoming campaign which opens in earnest away at Penzance on 3rd September (see 11th August, below).
However the club's Official Site reports that the team is still looking to recruit a goalkeeper. If you are over sixteen, willing to commit for at least a season and, of course, female, contact Yeovil Town Football Club on 01935 847888 asking for Dot Smith. You could also try e-mailing ytfcladies@ytfc.net.
The club is also still recruiting players for the Under 15 and Under 13 girls youth teams.

17 August 2006 : Briscoe And Williams Let Go
|
Speaking on BBC Radio Bristol this afternoon manager Russell Slade confirmed that trialists Michael Briscoe and Gareth Williams (see below, 15th August, for details on these players) had been allowed to leave the club.
Both played ninety minutes in the reserve fixture with Swindon Town on Tuesday night, and though Slade politely said they are done well and 'showed qualities' they were clearly not what he was looking for. However the third trialist, former Glover Anthony Tonkin, remains training at Huish Park, though the gaffer wouldn't be drawn on what the future held, preferring to stay with the line that at present it's just an opportunity for Tonkin to get back to fitness from the blisters he's been suffering on his heels.
Slade confirmed that other possibilities for new blood were being pursued at present, which ties in with the report in the Western Gazette that the General Manager - Football, John Milton, was elsewhere on Tuesday watching what was described as a "Championship outfit's young midfielder".

 17 August 2006 : Carling Cup Update
|
Yeovil Town asked for 2,400 tickets to be forwarded by Southampton for the Round One tie at St Mary's Stadium on 23rd August. Earlier this week around 800 had been sold, and unofficial reports say this figure is now up to about the thousand mark.
Southampton have been heavily pushing for sales on their Official Site, usually a sign that tickets aren't rushing out the door, but Saints fans do have the option of buying on the day, unlike Yeovil supporters who must purchase in advance from Huish Park Ticket Office.
The all-time low at St Mary's is the 15,908 who watched last January's 4-3 F.A. Cup win over Milton Keynes Dons. On that day Southampton charged £15.00 for adults. Prior to that it had been the 16,603 who saw Saints thrash Town's next opponents Tranmere Rovers 6-1 in the League Cup in October 2002. Prices then were £12.00 for adults. Ticket prices for next week's fixture are £10.00 for adults, with teenagers and seniors paying £5.00 and juniors just £1.00.

 17 August 2006 : Fry's Expectations Drop To 5,600
|
In an article in this week's Western Gazette that rather raises more questions than it answers, Yeovil Town chairman John Fry has suggested the Board was looking again at budgeting issues.
We have done the budget and have now dropped the average gate we expect to attend this season from 6,000 to 5,600. We are performing far better then we did last year and picking up more points. If we had fewer points I could understand the drop. But we are never complacent. We know there are difficulties and we are looking at alternatives, such as how we can make it cheaper to buy tickets with regard to on-line sales and at the ticket office. We have not had a lot of criticism about prices directly here, apart from what we read in the Press.
Given Fry's statement earlier in the week in the Western Daily Press that "We have increased the budget for the playing side of things and that will not change," (see Ciderspace 15th August, below) a budget now based on lower gates would imply either more cut backs than envisaged will have to be made elsewhere, or someone will have to be prepared to pick up a considerable loss at the end of the season - or a mixture of the two.
On the question of Premium Price fixtures Fry reiterated the policing issue, though this only appeared as an explanation recently, and wasn't mentioned when Premium pricing was introduced :
The categorised matches came about because we needed to cover bringing in extra stewards and police. But the police pulled out of covering the Bournemouth game at a late stage and if we have non-police matches, we consider whether we need to put the levy on those matches.
Supporters are not privy to whatever discussions went on when the charging policy was decided, but many were pretty confident they knew the reasons for the £4.00 surcharge: revenue raising pure and simple. And nothing wrong with that, providing the club judges its figures correctly. However there were early mutterings from some supporters that a £4.00 increase was too much, with something like £2.00 seen as more acceptable. Although not comparing like with like as the home match against AFC Bournemouth was at a different time last season, though also an evening kick-off and prone to the 'pre-Christmas effect', a drop in attendance of 1,727 is hard to explain away just through some being on holiday.
The chairman was looking for wider explanations :
We have been in contact with other clubs comparing their drop-off and it is not just a Yeovil Town problem. You also have to look at the factors such as we started early, people have X amount of money for entertainment and there was the World Cup, but we are now at League One level and wish to continue there.
There may be something in all of this - though Ciderspace's quick look at attendances around the leagues at this early stage of the season suggests that the picture is very variable, with as many or more clubs up as down on their early fixtures last season - but we would suggest that the board also needs to look closer to home.
