15 August 2006 : Reserves Come Back For A Point
|
The Reserves came back from a two goal deficit to take a point away at Swindon Town tonight.
With the Robins' Official Site recording that the hosts put out a strong side for the season's opening fixture in the Pontin's Holidays Combination, Swindon dominated the first half and threatened to run away with the game. They had the ball in the net early, but it was ruled the ball had been cut back from just the wrong side of the line. However the home team were not long denied. A clearance by the Yeovil defence didn't get enough distance, and when the ball was looped back in Fola Onibuje raced through to slide the ball home from 12 yards. Twenty-two minutes, 1-0.
More chances came - and went - as Swindon continued to press for the remainder of the half. Eventually the pressure told. In the final move before the break a corner found the head of Royce Brownlie. Yeovil 'keeper Darren Behcet pulled off a good block but unfortunately the ball bounced out to Fola Onibuje who drove it into the roof of the net. Forty-five minutes, 2-0.
The second half saw a reversal of fortunes, and after Onibuje's earlier brace it was Danny Webb who stepped forward with two strikes for the Glovers. On fifty-two minutes a volley inside the box made the score 2-1, and almost immediately Webb struck again as he slid the ball under the advancing goalkeeper for 2-2.
Final score : Swindon Town Reserves 2-2 Yeovil Town Reserves
Attendance 170

15 August 2006 : Youth Team At Swindon Match Details
|
Further to Saturday's news (August 12th) of the Youth Team's 4-2 defeat against Swindon Town, the club have released some further details on the match.
Six of the pre-season squad were unavailable for Saturday's game and three of them will be permanently unavailable. Right-back Craig Alcock, left-back Jake Smeeton and midfielder Stephen Maher, all of whom were Under 18 last season, have been informed they will be inelligible for this season's Football League Youth Alliance competition because they have been given professional contracts by the club.
Yet other clubs like their opponents Swindon Town are allowed to play over-age players! The Wiltshire side gets past the restriction because they have a formal 'Academy' structure, whilst the Glovers use only a single Under 18 side - a clear imbalance in the rules that the Football League should be looking at.
To make matters worse, goalkeeper John Stack, right-winger Dan O'Brien and central defender Harry Sherwood are all carrying injuries and none were able to travel to Swindon. As a result seven of Yeovil's travelling squad were aged 16 years old.
Swindon took the lead through Mustapha Carayol who knocked the ball in on the far post after the Glovers defence failed to clear 13 minutes in. Jake Hyde doubled Swindon's lead ten minutes later when he followed up on a rebound after goalkeeper Peter Burridge had parried the ball.
The Glovers pulled a goal back through Tom Clarke after he was upended inside the penalty box and dusted himself off to take his own spot kick, to pull things back to 2-1.
A Chris Allen free kick deceived Burridge for Swindon's third before Jake Hyde scored another close range goal. But then Tom Clarke pulled one back as defensive indecision allowed him to break through the middle and put the scores back to 4-2, with just 38 minutes gone!
A more even second half saw neither side extend the scoreline further, with both goalkeepers denying efforts. Swindon will doubtless be one of the stronger challengers for the title this season - the question is whether the Glovers can hang onto the title they won last season given the large inconsistency in the rules over the use of over-aged players.
Yeovil Town: 1. Peter Burridge 2. Ollie Wake 3. Mike McCormick 4. Darren Watts 5. Gary Bowles (capt) 12. Tom Clarke 7. Jamie Morgan 8. Phil Ormrod 9. Matt Concliffe 10. Ben Turnoch 11. Joe Hustie. Subs: 13. Ben Cochrane 15. Aaron Mead (60 mins for Hustie) 16. Jason Sims (58 mins for Watts) 17. Nick Medlin (62 mins for Turnoch).
Swindon Town: Jon Stewart, Andy Westall, Scott Doe, Tom Evans, Alex Rigley, Mustapha Carayol, Chris Allen, Sam Morris, Andy Caton, Jake Hyde, Tom Ahmed.

15 August 2006 : New Format For Customer Charter Meetings
|
The club has published on its Official Site a change to the way the Customer Charter Meetings will be constituted over the next twelve months in the first instance.
As well as the usual representation from what are termed, but not specified, "the official organisations", six other supporters will attend the meetings.
Those supporters interested in these positions should put their names forward, giving their reason(s) why they think they would be a suitable and beneficial addition to the CCM. Once nominated and accepted the six will become permanent members of the committee for the coming year.
E-mail your nomination to Sara Bradley at supporter.link@ytfc.net.

15 August 2006 : Fry Takes Attendance Issue Calmly
|
Chairman and owner John Fry has become well known amongst Yeovil Town fans over the years for his periodic gloomy prognostications scattered amongst his more optimistic announcements. The bets were on that the relatively poor gates for the first two league games at Huish Park this term would see some doom-laden quotes in the local press. Not so. John can still surprise us.
Mr Fry was looking towards a pro-active response when speaking to the Western Daily Press, rather than a wailing and gnashing of teeth. He asserted his determination to protect the playing budget and, if it becomes necessary, look for savings elsewhere :
We have increased the budget for the playing side of things this season and that will not change. We will have to look at making savings in other areas if the current trend with attendances continues but that will not be on the football side of the business.
Of course if the crowds drop then savings will be made anyway, as we will need fewer stewards and things like that. But I have had a meeting with Russell today and he is still looking to set up more deals for players, both in and out of the football club.
We all know that it is the football on the pitch and the players involved that bring the crowds in, so if we can strengthen the squad then we will.
He continued that he felt it was football itself rather than just Yeovil Town which was suffering a slow start to the season :
It's not just us, it's all across the leagues. I think people are tightening their belts and the entertainment and leisure industry is suffering. With us, we had an exceptional year last year, which was our first season in League One, and perhaps the novelty has worn off. But it's early days, we've got a new-look team and hopefully the crowds will come back. We've had a good start to the season and that can only help.
We have sent a letter from the manager to season-ticket holders who have not renewed, asking them why. It's important to know the reasons and then we can work on trying to tempt them back.
'Sent' or 'sending'? Readers of the Green Room will recall a lot of interesting discussion and ideas on the fall in attendances, and actions the club could take, over the last couple of days. Have a quick glance at those postmarks if a letter drops on your doormat. Hoodies may have their uses after all.

 15 August 2006 : Three Trialists Tonight?
|
Russell Slade is hoping to field three trialists in tonight's reserve fixture against Swindon Town.
Former Glover Anthony Tonkin, who needs no introduction, was training at Huish Park yesterday. Slade commented :
Anthony Tonkin's family still live in the area and he is training with us at the moment to maintain his fitness. He may play at Swindon tomorrow [Tuesday].
Forward Gareth Williams, South African born but qualified for Wales, was a trainee at Crystal Palace. He went out on loan spells to AFC Bournemouth, Cambridge United and twice to Colchester United, before the U's decided to make it a permanent deal by swapping another forward, Wayne Andrews, for him. In almost two years at Layer Road after signing permanently Williams made twenty-six starts and thirty-five appearances from the bench, but only scored seven goals. Towards the end of last season he went out on loan to Blackpool.
The third name is that of Michael Briscoe, right-back / central defender. A spell for a year as a trainee at Coventry City was followed by a free transfer to Macclesfield Town. He made twenty-seven starts and nine substitute appearances in his two years at Moss Rose. Briscoe finished last season on loan at Burton Albion, and was subsequently released by the Silkmen.
Details on tonight's fixture and how to get to the Hunts Copse venue are below (14th August).

 15 August 2006 : Southampton Ticketing Reminder
|
Further to our news item dated July 27th, a reminder that the Carling Cup Round One tie against Southampton on Wednesday 23rd August, kick-off 7.45 p.m., is ALL-TICKET for Glovers fans. No need to panic though. With the away section at St Mary's Stadium taking a minimum 3,200, and expandable to 4,750 if necessary, we are somewhat surprised at the decision in the first place, and certainly wouldn't expect demand to exceed supply.
Tickets are now on sale at the Huish Park Ticket Office. As reported below (22nd and 27th July) Saints have reduced prices for this fixture and, in our opinion, are something of a bargain :
Adults £10.00, over 65 and 'teens' £5.00, under 12 £1.00.
NB: There is a small discrepancy between the YTFC Ticket Office and the Southampton Official Site in terms of what happens if you are aged between 12 years and 12 years and 364 days. The above prices reflect how we believe the tickets are being sold from Huish Park for the game.

15 August 2006 : Officials For Prenton Park
|
Russell Booth (Nottinghamshire) will be the referee for the meeting of Tranmere Rovers and Yeovil Town this coming Saturday. We think it may be a couple of years since we've seen Mr Booth: the opening match of the 2004-05 season, a 3-1 loss at Gigg Lane.
Paul Graham (Greater Manchester) and Kevin Mattocks (Lancashire) are the assistants, Danny Roberts (Greater Manchester) the fourth official.
