2 October 2006 : Trial Two Get One Free!
Last week (See September 28th) Ciderspace carried details of two Sheffield United players that were coming down to Huish Park on trial - namely Colin Marrison and Ryan Gyaki. BBC Radio Bristol is reporting tonight that both players have arrived in Somerset accompanied by a third!

The additional player is midfielder James Ashmore who was born in Sheffield on March 2nd 1986. He is a central midfielder who has risen through the academy ranks, despite missing out on portions of his development through injury. He has had a prolonged spell in the Reserve Team more recently, and is a versatile player, being able to play in wide midfield positions as well as full-back.

Striker Colin Marrison was born on 23rd September 1985 and has had loan spells at League Two side Bury and non-leaguers Hinckley United and Leigh RMI. His official site describe him as a "versatile striker" who is a regular in the Sheffield United reserve team. He stands at 6'1". He has made three appearances for Sheffield United's first team, all in the League Cup, whilst he clocked up 16 appearances for Bury last season, without scoring. His loan periods at Hinckley and Leigh came during the 2004-05 season.

Midfielder Ryan Gyaki is a Canadian born on 6th December 1985 in Toronto, who is 5'10" tall. He is described as a "box-to-box midfielder" by his club. In January 2006 he was awarded by his country as Youth Player Of The Year for 2005 following a series of strong performances at Under 20 level.

2 October 2006 : Leroy's Verdict On The Brentford Game
Brentford manager Leroy Rosenior felt hard done by after he had watched his side lose 2-1 at Griffin Park to a late Chris Cohen goal on Saturday, claiming that his side had dominated the second half, although perhaps his claims that Yeovil scored with their first set piece - a 57th minute Terry Skiverton header - might take some believing. Speaking immediately after the game he stated:

"We had numerous chances and dominated the game in the second half but we caused our own problems. The first goal I think it was their first set piece. And the goal at the end we put it out for a throw in and they just stopped and watched and he’s just run it into the lad. I know it’s not acceptable and we missed chances, good chances at crucial times that can change games, but one thing we can’t do is switch off and we did that twice. It happened a few times in the first half, like when John (Mousinho) was being booked and then they had a spare man round the back. We weren’t organised. It’s naive and we didn’t get punished that time. It doesn’t matter how much you dominate a game at one end you’ve got to make sure you get it right at the other. It’s just about marking men. As soon as that ball goes out of play you’ve got to pick them up and we didn’t do that and got punished for that."

Rosenior also claimed that his side should have been the ones that won the game 2-1, citing a moment when apparently Jo Kuffour struck a post with a shot - although even Brentford's own official site match report fails to mention this moment:

"It’s disappointing because they worked extremely hard. Calum’s (Willock) chance at the end really was a great one and should have put us 2-1 up. We deserved to be 2-1 up at that stage because we had conceded the goal but picked ourselves up and gone and got back into it. We were creating chances - when Jo hit the post and Calum had his header. We created numerous chances but didn’t take them. If you created numerous chances but don’t take them you’ll get punished, especially when you go to sleep at the other end."

Despite the Glovers creating plenty of chances of their own, including three in the first six minutes, Rosenior felt that his side - who took 19 minutes before they had a chance of note - should also have taken the lead:

"We went 3-4-3 and had to chase the game but shouldn’t have been in that position. We should have scored the first goal but we didn’t. You can’t keep chasing games and expect to get something out of it. It’s disappointing because they’ve worked hard to get back into the game. I thought we deserved at least a point. It was an even first half and we dominated the game in the second half. You can tell by their reaction they thought they’d nicked it. I thought we deserved something out of the game, but you don’t if you do stupid things. It was a decent performance but now we haven’t won for seven games – and that’s a game we should have won. In the second half we dominated the game and we don’t win it because of the silly things we do. I can’t fault the lads for their work ethic and what they put in, but you can’t go to sleep when the ball goes out of play. Everybody worked hard and they put a lot into it, but it was a really hard lesson for them. When that ball goes out of play you’ve got to switch on. I hope how they feel now – which is gutted – allows that message to sink it."

2 October 2006 : Match Officials For Cheltenham Match
Friday night's match against Cheltenham Town will see Phil Dowd of Staffordshire take charge of proceedings. Mr Dowd will be assisted by Huish Park regular Guy Beale of Taunton and Roger East of Wiltshire. The fourth official will be Andrew Turner from Devon.

We don't normally cross paths with Mr Dowd given that he is on the "select" list of referees normally set aside for Premiership games. Dowd began refereeing in 1984, and reached the Premier League list in 2001. We think this is the first time he has refereed a match involving the Glovers. On Saturday he took charge of Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool and has so far refereed four games at that level this season, dishing out a fairly meagre seven yellow cards, with no dismissals.

2 October 2006 : Youth Team vs Bristol Rovers Match Details
Further to Saturday's news, Yeovil Town's Under 18s side thrashed their Bristol Rovers counterparts 4-1 on the weekend, giving them their first victory of the 2006-07 season. They had to work hard for it though, coming from a goal down and grabbing two late goals in a match that was still being heavily contested with 10 minutes to go.

Rovers took the lead from a free kick with Charles Reece curling a free kick over the Yeovil wall and into the top corner 16 minutes into the match. It looked as though Yeovil would be going in a goal down at the break until first half stoppage time gave them a real confidence booster. Jamie Morgan capitalised on Rovers' inability to clear their lines when he pounced on a loose ball in their box, finishing with a low drive to make the scoreline 1-1 at half time.

Five minutes after the break, Jamie Morgan was at it again. His cross into the box was badly misjudged by Rovers keeper Scott Armstrong, who managed to fumble what was probably not meant to be a direct attempt on goal into his own net.

The game stayed delicately balanced for more or less the rest of the second half with Rovers attempting to push up for the equaliser, but in the last 10 minutes, the Glovers secured all three points in fine fashion. On 81 minutes, Liam Hoarder squeezed between two Rovers defenders to head home a right wing cross. Then two minutes later, Hoarder got his second of the morning when he intercepted a Ryan Paddock defensive pass to burst through and give Stuart Housley something to smile about with a 4-1 victory.

Jamie Morgan (Jason Sims 84 mins) 10. Liam Hoarder (15. Joe Hastie 84 mins) 11. Tom Parsons. Not used: 17. Ren Turnock GK. Peter Burridge.

2 October 2006 : Russell's Verdict On The Brentford Game
Glovers boss Russell Slade is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite Saturday's 2-1 win over Brentford propelling his side into 2nd position in the League One table. Yeovil won the game through goals from Terry Skiverton and Chris Cohen to give the Glovers their fourth consecutive win, but Slade believes there is room for improvement within his side.

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol immediately after the game, Russell explained: "I just think that there is a long way to go. You can't come away from games thinking that things are sorted. There will always be things to work on. There is more improvement that has to come from the side if we are going to be successful and we talked about that at half time and even at the end of the game."

2 October 2006 : Bradford Game : Kids For A Quid
Yeovil Town's final pre-Christmas match against Bradford City on Saturday 23rd December will have a "Kids For A Quid" offer as part of the admission prices. Full details have yet to be released, but traditionally this allows a child under 16, when accompanied by an adult paying full price, to be admitted for the price of one pound. This arrangement will be confirmed closer to the date of the game.

With the last match before Christmas traditionally representing a lowish point for attendances, this is obviously a welcome attempt to reduce the impact of that seasonal factor and hopefully attract a few younger supporters through the doors. And it's hopefully more entertaining than going to see a pantomine show! (Oh yes it is ... oh no it isn't ... - Ed)
