9 February 2010 : Midweek Coach Trip To Carlisle Away, Anyone?
Yeovil Town are facing a midweek evening trip to Carlisle United now with the Cumbrians match at Brunton Park due to be postponed. The match was due to be played on March 27th 2010, but with the Cumbrians beating Leeds United tonight in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Final, this now means that Carlisle will have a more pressing engagement at Wembley Stadium on Sunday March 28th.

As a result, the Carlisle game will need to be rearranged, with probably the longest midweek trip in the history of the club on the cards here. Better start putting two days holiday aside for when a new date is announced ...

9 February 2010 : Welsh Sets Target For League Assists
Yeovil Town left-winger Andy Welsh has said that he is setting himself a clear personal target for the end of the current season. The former Sunderland player wants to finish as top of the League One assists table - based on data published by the Football League through Press Association data.

Welsh got another assist on Saturday, when he set up Dean Bowditch for the opening goal of the match against Wycombe Wanderers, and even scored later on during the game. That was his ninth assist of the season, and currently trails just two other players, despite having missed a number of games, whilst a wingless diamond-formation, or a 4-3-3 with wide forwards was employeed. Saturday's match saw him restored to the side in a bulk standard 4-4-2 formation, leaving Welsh a consistent pain in Wycombe's side throughout the afternoon.

Welsh told BBC Somerset that it was important for him to have targets to aim at and that this was one that he was going to have a good go at:

"I'm delighted to get another assist, especially as I haven't been in the team for a while. As a winger I like to pride myself to get as many assists in the season as I can. So to have nine now is good for me, and I want to push on and get back to the top of the (assists) table again. I think it's nine now, so I'm two or three behind them, but they've been playing every week. But like I said, I like to pride myself on that and I'll keep doing as much as I can to get back to the top of that."

The two that Welsh is currently chasing are Swindon Town's Jon-Paul McGovern (10 assists) and Norwich City's Wes Hoolahan (11 assists), although Charlton Athletic's Deon Burton has the same nine-assist tally as Welshy. The Glovers left-winger admitted he was keeping very close tabs on his rivals:

"I think he (Wes Hoolahan) got a couple here actually, so I do keep a count on it, but hopefully I can get back up there."

8 February 2010 : Yet Another Meeting For Hatters
Stockport County, now in administration for nine months and counting, are due to have their case reviewed yet again by the Football League, with the meeting scheduled for this Thursday (11th February).

Hatters fans are under the impression that the Football League is still concerned about two main issues. The 'primacy rule', where clubs sharing a ground with another sport are expected by the Football League to have primacy rights over fixtures, has led to questions about the relationship with Sale Sharks, who have control of Edgeley Park. The second concern is related: the Football League is reported to be unhappy about the status of County's tenancy agreement on the stadium.

Time is running out for Stockport to reach some agreements that will stand up to scrutiny and get them out of administration. Although the rules appear somewhat opaque, most commentators feel it likely that if the club has not resolved the issues and exited administration by the time of the next Football League AGM it will be in danger of expulsion from the League.

8 February 2010 : Bowditch Lands In Football League Team Of The Week
Yeovil Town striker Dean Bowditch has deservedly made it into the Football League's Team Of The Week for League One. Dean scored twice against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday as well as laying on the move that left-winger Andy Welsh converted and so is an easy one for inclusion in the final eleven.

Dean becomes Yeovil's 11th different nomination of the season. The full team - which is made up this week from 11 players from 11 different clubs is as follows:

Clayton Ince (Walsall)
Kevin Amankwaah (Swindon) Adam Virgo (Brighton) Danny Livesey (Carlisle) Peter Hartley (Hartlepool)
Chris Hackett (Millwall) Dominic Blizzard (Bristol Rovers) Peter Leven (Milton Keynes Dons) Myles Weston (Brentford)

7 February 2010 : Vote Weale! Vote Now!
Former Yeovil Town goalkeeper Chris Weale has been nominated for Soccer AM's best goals of the year 2009. Wealey, who is now playing for Leicester City was on loan at Huish Park last season and scored a stunning second half injury header on April 21st 2009, to give Yeovil the share of the points in a 2-2 draw.

When a goal like that is scored three games from the end of the season, with points still needed to stay up, it became priceless. But given that it was netted against local rivals Hereford United, who were on their way to League Two, made it all the more sweeter.

Follow the link below and choose Goal 9 to give you a reminder of the goal, whereupon you will entirely ignore the other 19 shortlisted, and try and give Wealey another reminder of his time at Huish Park.

7 February 2010 : Glovers Youth 3 Rovers Youth 2 : A Clear Game Of Two Halves
Yeovil Town were involved in the proverbial game of two halves yesterday as they narrowly claimed a 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers U18s, despite being three up by half time, with two goals from Tyler Sheppard and Cory Lewis. But the South-West Youth Alliance leaders came back into the match during the second period, netting twice to put the game on a knife-edge.

The Glovers truly got off to a flyer, netting just 45 seconds into the game with their first attack. Cory Lewis fed Tyler Sheppard who was in a wide right position and he calmly shot past Pirates keeper Rob Holmes.

That was to set the pattern of the opening 45 minutes, with Rovers on the back foot, and Yeovil in particular exploiting their left flank. Just 10 minutes into the match the same combination of Cory Lewis and Tyler Sheppard struck again, and it was almost identical to Yeovil's opener as they got themselves 2-0 up in an incredible start.

The Glovers suffered a blow with 15 minutes on the clock as Lewis Clarke had to be withdrawn with a groin strain. Lloyd Matthews was his more-than-capable replacement. The Glovers extended their lead further before the break, with Cory Lewis changing from provider to scorer as he took advantage of a Tyler Sheppard cross to net from close range. Overall it had been a one-sided 45 minutes with few Rovers players looking in the game, with the exception of former Plymouth Argyle midfielder George Booth.

It was difficult to believe that a side top of the league and with only one defeat all season could produce another half of similar inertness, and sure enough Rovers manager Darren Patterson appeared to have given his side a rocket that woke them up and they were level within three minutes of the restart. Former Birmingham City academy player Shane Williams took advantage of a poor defensive clearance and rifled past Ryan Peacock from 20 yards to give Rovers a life-line at 3-1.

On 57 mins, they were given another lifeline when Rhys Baggridge was judged to have fouled a Rovers player inside the box in his attempt to make a block tackle, but Jack McKenna's penalty was a little too straight and Ryan Peacock was alert to make a crucial save.

Overall, the visitors were well in control with the game becoming fairly feisty with some very strong tackling. George Booth landed in the book just past the hour mark for persistent fouling. On 65 minutes though, Yeovil were in a spot of bother when Jordan Tillson's headed goal pulled it back to 3-2 with still 25 minutes to go.

When midfielder Tom Gallagher had to be helped off the pitch with a nasty looking ankle ligament injury the Glovers might have finally caved in. But eventually they weathered the storm and began to see the game out in more comfortable fashion, having restored the balance of the game by the end, thus claiming probably their best result in the league so far this season.

Speaking after the game, Head of Youth Mo Hopkins said he was delighted with the team's first half performance, but that the team took the foot off the gas (in both senses!) letting Rovers back into the game:

"We had an impressive first half and played with confidence and fluidity not giving their opponents a chance to see the ball. They followed my instructions to exploit a perceived weakness on the Rovers left which paid dividends. However, in the second half we seemed to think the game was won and relaxed, allowing them back into it. But eventually we managed to get our concentration back and close out the game well. Again, against an established, and older Youth team, I thought our young team stood up well. I was particularly impressed with Tyler Sheppard who showed sharpness and a confidence in front to of goal, and the Toms’, Hopkins and Gallagher, in the centre of midfield who are started to form a formidable partnership. I just hope that Gally’s injury isn’t as severe as it appears."

Mo Hopkins also added his thanks to Sherborne School and their staff, and most of all their groundsman John Olde who was able to accommodate a last minute change of venue after the Ilchester venue became unavailable.

Final Score: Yeovil Town U18s 3 Bristol Rovers U18s 2.

Scorers: Tyler Sheppard (1 min, 1-0), Tyler Sheppard (10 mins, 2-0), Cory Lewis (38 mins, 3-0), Shane Williams (48 mins, 3-1), Jordan Tillson (65 mins, 3-2)

7 February 2010 : Ladies Ruffle Canaries Feathers In The Cup
Yeovil Town Ladies have managed to gain a brilliant win over Norwich City Ladies this afternoon. In a game played at Plantation Park, the Ladies even managed to recover from going a goal down, and losing their first choice goalkeeper 20 minutes into the match after a nasty collision.

But they didn't let those two set-backs grind them down, and they eventually grew into the match, as the first half closed, giving preview to a superb second half performance. Goals from Kayleigh Nardiello, Kim Turner and Jemma Tewkesbury eventually turned the game on its head, and the Ladies have now secured a Fifth Round home tie against Nottingham Forest in the next round of the FA Women's Cup.

Congratulations to all the Ladies, and hope you have a very happy journey home!

Final Score: Norwich City Ladies 1 Yeovil Town Ladies 3.

6 February 2010 : Wycombe 1 Yeovil 4 : Wanderers Given A Dose Of Deja Vu
A fifteen minute purple patch by Yeovil Town was enough for them to secure a hefty win, and their second four goal tally against Wycombe Wanderers this season. Two goals from Dean Bowditch were added to by Andy Welsh and Owain Tudur Jones, thus meaning that Matt Harrold's headed equaliser against his old club was of little relevance.

In terms of team selection, Nathan Jones disappeared entirely out of the matchday squad, whilst Ryan Mason was this week's 'sixth loan', getting the weekend off. Craig Alcock was left on the bench, with a slight knock meaning that Terrell Forbes and Nathan Smith took over the full-back positions. Gavin Tomlin and Andy Welsh got the nod for the more forward wide positions, as the Glovers opted for a bulk standard 4-4-2 formation. No nested midfield structures. No wide forwards. Just a simple approach, and one in which all players looked comfortable in their positions.

The first half actually wasn't much to write home about. The opening 15 minutes barely produced anything, although the home side had considerably more possession, with Yeovil struggling to build anything in the opposition half. Thus when Dean Bowditch rifled a shot from just inside the box and into the top right hand corner, after he had been fed by Andy Welsh, it was a bolt from the blue entirely.

As for the rest of the first period, probably the only main picks were two awful misses by both sides. First, Dean Bowditch's right-wing run produced a perfect looking cross for Andy Welsh to convert, with home keeper Scott Shearer already committed to his front post, but Welsh skied his attempt over the top of the home terrace and out of the ground.

Next, two former Glovers combined, with Kevin Betsy skinning Nathan Smith and putting the ball across the six yard box. Matt Harrold appeared to have a tap-in, but contrived to put it wide from four yards out. In his defence, he was under pressure from Steven Caulker, and may have claimed that the Glovers centre-back had the last touch on his shot. However, given that referee Steve Bratt awarded a goal-kick, the official view was that Harrold had missed the open goal. However, both Welsh and Harrold were to redeem themselves early in the second half.

Wycombe's Stuart Beavon ended the first half by landing the ball in the back of the net, but John Mousinho's through ball was slightly mistimed and up went the offside flag to rescue the Glovers.

Wycombe had looked their most dangerous from set pieces and one criticism of the Glovers were that they were giving away a few too many fouls in their own half. One such foul by Gavin Tomlin, set Wycombe up for their move that allowed them their equalising goal. Dean Keates sent in the free kick, and Matt Harrold rose highest to loop his header over Alex McCarthy and into the net.

The home side introduced Luke Oliver for an injured Adam Hinshelwood and perhaps that change caught them cold as almost immediately, the Glovers managed to get themselves back in front. Dean Bowditch stretched a Wycombe defence that appeared to have gone AWOL, and as Scott Shearer parried his low right wing cross, two Glovers were queuing up on the back post and Andy Welsh got himself a gift. This time he didn't disappoint.

Thereafter, and with echoes of Wycombe's 4-0 Boxing Day defeat at Huish Park, the home side fell apart as their rather sluggish looking back four got put under pressure through Yeovil's counter-attacking. Luke Oliver's crude trip on Dean Bowditch on the edge of the box landed him in the book, with the tackle bordering on a professional foul.

Although Oliver was to stay on the field, he was still to be punished further, as a free kick from Owain Tudur Jones was sneaked round the blind side of a badly positioned wall and past Scott Shearer for the third goal of the afternoon.

Three very quickly became four as once again the slow Wycombe defence couldn't cope with another break-away goal with Dean Bowditch put through on goal, and as keeper Scott Shearer advanced, Bowditch poked the ball past him and in off the post to put Yeovil 4-1 up and in dreamland!

The final 20 minutes of the game didn't quite live up to that period of play that had seen four goals in 17 minutes. To their credit, Wycombe didn't give up, but in their hearts they knew they were beaten, whilst the Glovers knew they didn't have to do too much more other than to hold their shape. Three substitutions ensured that fresh legs could be introduced, and the Glovers easily saw out the remainder of the game.

The match overall was not a million miles away from the Boxing Day match, with a tight 50 minutes being followed by a 15 minute phase where Wanderers just couldn't handle pace and counter-attacking as they pushed players up for an equaliser. Each time they tried it, Yeovil broke away, and the second half finishing was clinical, given that there weren't too many other chances throughout the game. But the most important thing was that it was an emphatic away win, giving Yeovil their second of the season. Now all Skivo needs to do is to lock the blueprint to that success in a safe and ensure that it gets brought out again for the next match on the road.

Final Score: Wycombe Wanderers 1 Yeovil Town 4.

Scorers: Dean Bowditch (16 mins, 0-1), Matt Harrold (50 mins, 1-1), Andy Welsh (52 mins, 1-2), Owain Tudur Jones (60 mins, 1-3), Dean Bowditch (67 mins, 1-4)

5 February 2010 : Wycombe Wanderers vs Yeovil Town Match Preview
Yeovil Town travel to Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow, for what has all the hallmarks of a 'relegation six-pointer'. Wanderers lie in 23rd place - five points off the safety line, and eight points away from the Glovers. With Wanderers having played more games than any other club in the bottom six, they desperately need to make points count now, whilst the Glovers can ill-afford the prospect of a 5th defeat in six games. This is a game that will play a huge part in shaping each club's season, although we're a long way from declaring such a match as a "must win" game.

The Glovers beat Wycombe 4-0 on Boxing Day at Huish Park, but it's worth remembering that this was a far from one-sided match, with Glovers goalkeeper winning the Sponsors Man of the Match as well as this site's Man of the Match for a string of saves whilst the game was delicately poised at 1-0.

Since that match, Wanderers have gone on a bit of a spending spree, bringing in eight new signings during the transfer window. Striker Gareth Ainsworth arrived on deadline day, penning an 18 month deal, from Queens Park Rangers. On the same day another striker Kevin McLeod came on a free transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Meanwhile Josh Payne has arrived on loan from West Ham United, Steve Arnold was signed from Eastleigh, Dean Keates has arrived as a free agent, Kevin Betsy has joined from Southend United, Adam Hinshelwood was signed from manager Gary Waddock's old club Aldershot and Alex Revell also arrived on loan from Southend United. They also had several near misses along the way, and with only defender Michael Duberry, midfielder Tommy Doherty and striker Chris Zebrowski heading through the out door, there's little doubt that Wycombe have a much bigger and stronger squad for the rest of the season.

That said, despite their new squad size, they will still have a number of players missing. New arrival Gareth Ainsworth has been signed as injured with a calf strain, whilst Leon Johnson (hip), Lewwis Spence (knee), Matt Bloomfield (knee) and Ian Westlake (knee) will all sit this one out.

As far as the Glovers are concerned, midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala is the club's only definite absentee, although at least one other player will be forced to sit in the stands. This is due to the rules concerning the number of loan players in a matchday squad. Jonathan Obika was the unlucky player last weekend, although manager Terry Skiverton has implied that he will not pick the same player every match. Owain Tudur Jones seems certain to provide the midfield "blocker" role that Kalala has played so well this season.

Wycombe's current form is fairly poor, with only one win in their last nine matches. They've also lost their last three home games. However, there was a chink of daylight in last week's 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers. Three strikers netted in that match, with former Glover Matt Harrold, Alex Revell and former Weymouth forward Stuart Beavon providing the goals, meaning that Waddock has a nice headache when selecting his starting line-up for tomorrow.

The Glovers, meanwhile, have not enjoyed the unplanned winter break. Losing four of their five matches over the past month and with some fairly inert performances with them, that's added to by the monkey on the team's back that is the away form. Skiverton says he plans to go on the offensive at Adams Park, suggesting a change of tactic from the last away match at Tranmere Rovers where blocking the opposition out was the priority:

"I think we've got to go into this game (at Wycombe) looking to win. This is the business end of the season now and our away form needs to improve. It's really tight at the bottom and we've got to start picking up points away from home."

The match kicks off at 3.00p.m. and tickets are available on the day of the match. The Ciderspace Guide to Wycombe Wanderers is here and gives you all of the usual reviews of the town and the stadium.

5 February 2010 : Glovers Still Hoping For Davies Signing
Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton says the club have not given up all hope of signing attacking midfielder Arron Davies. The deal to bring him to Huish Park collapsed eight days ago due to FIFA regulations concerning the number of clubs a player can play for during a single season.

Tomorrow's opponents Wycombe Wanderers encountered the same problem with striker Alex Revell earlier this month, but have since managed to circumvent the rules and he will line up in the Wanderers starting eleven tomorrow. Skiverton told BBC Somerset that were still pursuing various options they felt they had of doing the same:

"He's still training with us at the minute and we're trying to work something out. I'll let you know in the next week or week-and-a-half if we can do something. We're still looking into various avenues of still bringing Arron on board. He wants to come to us, and he wants to stay and he wants to play for Yeovil Town. For me, that's all of the hallmarks of us as a club in going that extra mile to bring someone in when they're absolutely desperate to play for you."

One snag the club may face is that FIFA have been alerted to the use of an emergency loan as a means of getting round the problem. There is a question of whether emergency loans are in fact legal under FIFA transfer regulations given that they often take place outside the transfer window, and a spokesman for the World regulatory body has said that they're going to be taking up the issue with the Football Association:

"FIFA are concerned about the system of emergency loans in general and have approached the Football Association on various occasions in the past regarding this. FIFA will be contacting them again in order to obtain clarification with regard to this issue. Generally speaking, and with regard to the application of the pertinent rule, ie. Article 5 Paragraph 3 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, the regulation should be applied as stated."

The Football Association have said that they are determined to continue to allow emergency loans to go through, claiming that they are contracted differently to standard loans and permanent transfers:

"Emergency loans don’t count when calculating the number of clubs a player has played for as he remains under contract to his parent club."

4 February 2010 : Skivo Giving No Favours For A Friend
Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton has said that his decision to appoint Darren Way as one of his first team coaches is not one born out of sympathy or friendship for the former midfielder. Darren announced his retirement from the game earlier today, due to injuries sustained in a road traffic accident in December 2008, but in doing so it was also announced that he would officially form part of the backroom team, having done so in an unofficial capacity since being able to get back on his feet again.

Skiverton said that his decision to appoint Way was a 'business' decision, and that he told BBC Somerset that there were no favours on the table:

"This is business. Darren is very good at what he does. He brings us something fresh and I always feel like it's him looking after me, rather than me looking after him. I've got that with him, with Nathan (Jones), with Ben (Roberts) and with Simon (Baker) as well. We're a really close-knit team, even down to our little kitman Dan. We're all together, and we need that."

4 February 2010 : Taff's Gloversblog : Specualtion (sic) Is Damaging
Managerial Rule Number One: Always remember to praise the fans at frequent intervals. Generally manager Terry Skiverton has remembered to do that in spades during his year in charge so far. Until today's article sourced from the Western Gazette, that is.

In the latest edition of Taff's Gloversblog, there's a look at that article, and why it's ruffled a few feathers amongst Glovers supporters. Has Skivo sinned, or been sinned against by the reaction to the article? Read on and give your own views via the Comment Facility at the foot of the article.

4 February 2010 : Skivo Critical Of Internet Leaks On Davies
Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton has suggested that internet-based Glovers supporters almost scuppered a deal with midfielder Arron Davies. As it happens, the deal with the former Nottingham Forest player has yet to go through anyway, due to a block by the Football League and Football Association on the Welshman's player registration forms.

However, Skiverton has told this week's Western Gazette that supporters who posted rumours of him signing on a Glovers message board were apparently guilty of alerting other clubs to his availability. In the end, Arron agreed terms with the Glovers, and it was the footballing authorities that ended up driving the nail in the coffin to stop the deal going through. Skiverton told the paper that those supporters could cost the club in the long run:

"I had been trying to do a deal with Arron Davies but with all this stuff on the internet, all they are doing is alerting other clubs to the players I am after. When that happens the players are getting phone calls from every other club who can offer money. We were lucky that Arron wanted to come to Yeovil because he was another player people said (on the internet) before anything happened, we were talking to. You have to be wary about breaking the news first because it could cost the club in the long run. We have not got the finances to compete with other teams but there are people who think they are being clever saying 'I saw this person in ASDA' for example and they are not helping the club whatsoever."

Blaming the internet has become a popular pastime for a number of individuals within the club over the years. What is often forgotten in the translation is that the internet is merely one of many vehicles of communication, and that you're just as likely to pick up a rumour in the pubs, the VP Lounge or one of the bigger companies in town. If something has got onto the internet, then it's happened through a human being, and it means that the news is almost certainly already out via the rumourmill.

The second question is whether an internet forum has more clout in attracting interest from a rival club, than - for example - the Nottingham Forest official site, which announced the release of the player on 19th January, or other commercial sites such as the BBC Sport website. We'd also suspect that Arron's agent will have been ringing around clubs on the player's behalf to try to drum up interest. Are these methods less likely to alert clubs than a (on the scale of things) low key message board, where we believe the first claim that Yeovil Town might be making a move came up on the 24th January, close to a week after every club in the country with a conceivable interest would have already known Davies was available.

Regardless, if the club is really worried about 'leaks' then cutting rumours out at source should be what it should be concentrating on. If Skivo is concerned that a claim on the Net that Yeovil had made a move for Davies materially affected that move then he should be looking closer to home to find where the information originated from. However, as always, it's easier to blame the fans and 'hoodies' than look to one's own.

4 February 2010 : Darren Way Retires ... And Turns To A Coaching Role
As reported earlier today on this site, Yeovil Town midfielder Darren Way has now officially retired from the game. The former Swansea City player officially revealed his intentions at this lunchtime's press call and will now hang up his boots. On the plus side, he will remain at the club, taking on a coaching role at Huish Park.

Darren made 274 appearances for the club across three spells at Huish Park, scoring 36 goals along the way, and earnt a reputation for being the definitive terrier in midfield. On occasions opposition players and team-mates described him as a rat, a terrier and of course a weasel for the way that he would constantly bite at opposition ankles in his role as the man who broke up midfield play. That made him perfect for a five-and-a year almost unbroken partnership with playmaker Lee Johnson and thus Darren became a critical member of the side that rose from the Conference into League One.

In January 2006, Darren was transferred for a fee of £150,000 to league rivals Swansea City, but this was to be a less fruitful period of his career, with a succession of shin injuries constantly putting him on the treatment table. As he sat out his time at the Liberty Stadium, the Swans rose up from League One to the Championship, meaning that when Darren came back from his injury problems, a long list of new midfielders had been drafted in and Darren found himself well down the pecking order. On one of his rare appearances for the Welsh club in a match at the Liberty Stadium, Darren's substitute appearance brought him a standing ovation from the travelling Yeovil fans despite him being in new club colours.

Manager Russell Slade brought him back to Huish Park during the 2007-08 season where he notched up a further eight appearances on loan. However, a hamstring strain meant he headed back to the Liberty Stadium in early 2008.

The club's second attempt to bring him back was more successful, with Swansea waiving the remainder of the transfer fee they owed the Glovers to allow Darren to return to Huish Park without money needing to change hands. A further 19 appearances were notched up, but disaster was to strike in December 2008 when a road traffic accident put Darren and club employee Bruce James in a critical state. Darren suffered a broken left femur, a broken left kneecap, broken and a dislocated right elbow, a broken and dislocated left hip, multiple fractures of his right wrist, damage to his right hand, a ruptured left bicep, and deep cuts to both shins and soft tissue damage. He had nine operations to help him rehabilitate, and his attitude to his injuries was extraordinary, such that in July 2009, he appeared as a 90th minute substitute in Terry Skiverton's testimonial. That was to be his last appearance in a Yeovil Town club shirt, and merely a minute of 'Weasel' on the pitch was enough to induce a number of tears in the stands.

Since then, Darren has been spotted scouting for the club for new players, having been part of the scouting team that recruited former team-mate Shaun MacDonald from Swansea City on his current loan deal. He has also taken the team for pre-match warm-ups at numerous matches this season, and has even been spotted jogging around the streets of Yeovil - an incredible sight given the list of injuries above.

He will now officially join the coaching team at Huish Park, and so as one door closes another one opens. This may be a sad day for Darren in that it ends his playing career, but if we know him well, we're sure that he will channel his thoughts towards making a success of his coaching position. If anyone deserves a clean start and new success, then Darren does. The very best of luck to him in the present and in the future.

4 February 2010 : Dazza Due To Retire From Game?
Yeovil Town midfielder Darren Way is expected to announced his formal retirement from the game today. Darren is going to be present at the weekly Huish Park press meeting today, and there have been rumours over the last week or two that an internal decision has already been taken.

With Darren's appearance at this lunchtime's session, it would appear that the rumours have some grounding to them, and so the expectation is that such plans will be made formal today. Since his traffic accident in December 2008, Darren has been unofficially acting as a backroom coach and scout for the club. His playing contract runs out in June 2010, and so one of the questions that would need answering is whether the club are able to give him a permanent backroom role in some capacity.

Once we get more detail on this, to confirm or deny the rumours, we'll provide a further update.

3 February 2010 : Yeovil Town Appoint New Under-16s Manager
Yeovil Town have appointed a new manager of their Under-16s Centre of Excellence side. The new man won't be an entirely unfamiliar face, with Tam Burns transferring from managing Yeovil Town Ladies Under-16s, to the same age group on the men's side.

Tam is a UEFA Level 'B' qualified coach, who has been with Yeovil Town Ladies for three years, taking their current Under 16s side up through three age groups. He has also provided general coaching for the Ladies goalkeepers, as well as providing assistance to the Ladies' First Team.

Speaking to the Yeovil Town Ladies official website, Burnes said that he had found it a difficult decision to make:

"I would just like to say what a fantastic three seasons I have had at the club, and leaving was not a decision I took lightly. I had been agonising over the decision with (first team manager) Steve (Phelps) since the beginning of October when the chance of coaching one of the senior Centre Of Excellence teams materialised. This coupled with me coaching the Navy team at Yeovilton as well as the U13’s at the Centre Of Excellence didn’t leave enough days in the week really, and something had to give. I am proud of the Under-sixteen girls, and what they have achieved, and firmly believe there will be a future first team star or two amongst them."

He will not be entirely breaking his links with the Ladies side, as he plans to continue his commitment towards organising their Summer Youth Tournament this year:

"My support for organising the club’s End Of Season Tournament remains unwavering as I see this as a sound financial event for the future of the club. This event has raised extra funds for the club and will continue to do so as it grows from infancy to maturity."

Welcome aboard Tam, and good luck in your new position at the club.

2 February 2010 : Obika And Gudjohnsen Double Quick For Spurs
Yeovil Town striker Jonathan Obika netted twice in a 4-1 win for Tottenham Hotspur Reserves earlier today. He was in illustrious company as Eidur Gudjohnsen netted the other two goals in a match played at Spurs Lodge.

Their opponents were Dagenham and Redbridge and in addition to scoring twice, Obika also set up Gudjohnsen's opener. Development coach Clive Allen told the Spurs official site that he was impressed by the quickfire opener and by Obika's two goals that followed:

"Eidur must have scored with his first touch. Jon Obika closed the goalkeeper down, blocked his clearance and the ball spun out to Eidur and he finished from about 12 yards. Jon scored two excellent goals after that. His first was a left-foot shot into the top corner from the edge of the box and his second a finish at the far post after a break from Andros Townsend."

Gudjohnsen scored the fourth goal of the afternoon after Dagenham had pulled the score back to 3-1. It's not stated whether Glovers pair Steven Caulker and Ryan Mason have returned to London in what is, from a fixture list point of view, a blank midweek period for the Glovers.

2 February 2010 : Rovers Thrashing Sees Glovers Drop A Place
Yeovil Town dropped a place in the League One table tonight, as three matches were played tonight. The reason for the one place slip was down to Leyton Orient's five goal thrashing against Bristol Rovers that lifted them up to 11th as Yeovil finished the evening in 15th place.

Orient's massacre was only witnessed by 2,931 fans in East London, but the home side dominated throughout with goals from Stephen Purches, Ryan Jarvis, Jason Demetriou and Jonathan Tehoue. Rovers' miserable night was summed up when a Scott McGleish penalty came off the woodwork, and goalkeeper Mikkel Anderson ricocheted the rebound into his own net for the third goal of the night. It's probably safe to say that Rovers fans calling in to BBC Bristol post-match were not too happy.

A last minute winner from Kayode Odejayi gave Colchester United a 2-1 win over Carlisle United that keeps the Cumbrians one league place and two points ahead of the Glovers. Ian Harte had actually given Carlisle the lead in Essex before Clive Platt's equaliser on the hour mark.

The third match of the evening saw Walsall and Charlton Athletic share the points in a match that does little for the Addicks automatic promotion hopes. Walsall took the lead through Troy Deeney before a Deon Burton penalty on the stroke of half time levelled the scores. Deeney got his marching orders with just over 12 minutes left but the home side held on.

There was meant to be a fourth game being played tonight, but yet again Stockport County's Edgeley Park pitch proved to be a stumbling block, with a waterlogged pitch wiping out their local derby against Oldham Athletic, leaving the Latics frustrated and still in the relegation zone. They are currently two points adrift of the safety line, but with up to four games in hand on those sides above them, they will hope to make that count when they do eventually play their fixture backlog.

2 February 2010 : Kalala Frustrated At Missing Glovers Games
Yeovil Town midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala has admitted he will find the next two Glovers matches highly frustrating. The defensive blocker picked up his 10th booking of the season in the 0-1 home defeat against Huddersfield Town and will now be sitting it out in Saturday's trip to Wycombe Wanderers, as well as the following weekend's home match against Gillingham.

Kalala told BBC Somerset that the timing of the two match ban was not good, particularly given that the games would be against two of Yeovil's relegation rivals and with the season beginning to reach a critical stage:

"I'm deeply disappointed to get the ban, especially at this time of year. When you get to the business end of the season, you don't want to be missing games. But there's nothing you can do. I'm going to have to miss those games, and try and come back fresh and strong."

JP admitted that he was not the best player to have sat in the stands for a game but added that he would do his best to concentrate on his training in preparation for his return to the side for the Tuesday night home game against Colchester United on February 16th:

"When you are watching a game, and you can't play and you can't do anything about it, that really hurts in itself. But I just want to keep training, so when I come back, I can give everything for the team."

2 February 2010 : Canaries Confirm High Court Proceedings
Just over a week ago, fellow League One side Norwich City put out a series of press releases indicating that they were preparing to take legal action against the News of the World for allegedly libelling the Carrow Road club.

Yesterday in the midst of all the Deadline Day transfer news, Norwich confirmed that they have issued High Court proceedings against the paper claiming that the lowbrow tabloid had "failed to comply with the terms of the letter sent by our solicitors".

Given that one of the paper's claims was that the Canaries would go into administration by Thursday 28th January, and here we are on Tuesday 2nd February, it's difficult to understand exactly what the paper's defence will be.

In general terms though, it's fair to say that the Canaries do have a few questions that need answering concerning their finances. Thus the timing of their Shareholders' AGM tonight could produce a lively atmosphere, coming on the back of the libel action, and the publication of accounts that revealed they were £23 million in debt with the 2008-09 season posting a £5 million loss.

Shareholders will undoubtedly demand to know how such a trend can be reversed, and whether the club is prepared to put on the record a pledge not to sell their Carrow Road ground to a third party to raise revenue - something that Canaries Chairman Alan Bowkett has refused to rule out. If they do not reverse that trend, then the Canaries will reach a point where the 'A' word will have some merit behind it - just not on the date that a tabloid rag claims it will happen on.

2 February 2010 : Officials For Wycombe Wanderers vs Yeovil Town
Officials for Yeovil Town's Saturday away match against Wycombe Wanderers have been announced. In charge will be Steve Bratt (West Midlands). The match will take place at Adams Park on Saturday 6th February, kick-off 3.00p.m.

You'd think a referee with a surname like Bratt might be a bit of an irritance, but in all honesty, our six experiences have been relatively positive, particularly as two of the six games featured significant incidents which he seemed to deal with in a level-headed manner.

The November 2005 FA Cup match against Macclesfield Town saw him red-card Danny Swailes for deliberate handball inside the box. Then just over a year later he took charge of the 4-2 defeat against Port Vale, booking two players each, but having enough self-control to avoid reaching for his reds when Vale's players tried to provoke an on-pitch melee in the final minute after a Chris Cohen foul. The correct decision - a yellow card - was the outcome despite the histrionics of the home team.

His third involvement in a Yeovil match was the November 2007 match at the New Den against Millwall. The 2-1 defeat for the Glovers was not influenced by anything Mr Bratt was doing on the field of play. Then we had him again for the March 2008 win over Doncaster Rovers, with the referee again not warranting anything worthy of a mention.

Last season, and one we're somewhat loathe to mention, Mr Bratt was in charge of Yeovil Town's 5-0 thrashing by Brighton and Hove Albion in March 2009. Whilst he sent off keeper Josh Wagenaar during that match for a second bookable offence, we'd not dare to suggest that he had anything to do with the scoreline on a dreadful day.

Finally, on a more entertaining note, Mr Bratt was in charge of the 3-3 draw against Leyton Orient back in August 2009, that was a somewhat topsy-turvy affair. Referees are often guilty of taking over the focus of the game - with six goals scored, this wasn't a game where anyone was looking at the referee.

Mr Bratt will be assisted by (Devon) and (Wiltshire). The Fourth Official will be (Worcestershire).

1 February 2010 : Transfer Deadline Day: Nothing Doing For Glovers
The January Transfer Window has closed now, with no incoming or outgoing transfers from Huish Park on Deadline Day. The main bit of activity for Yeovil Town actually came right at the start of the transfer window when a number of players were shown the door, and a couple of loan signings had new deals set up for the second half of the season.

Overall, in terms of net gains and losses, there was one brand new arrival with Owain Tudur Jones signing a one month loan deal from Norwich City, whilst Andy Lindegaard and George O'Callaghan both left the club. Fringe players Louis Lavers and Sam Lechmere also were let go, after their short term deals at the club expired.

Four senior players gained new deals with the club, as Terrell Forbes and Jean-Paul Kalala were given further short term contracts at the club. Meanwhile loan pair Shaun MacDonald and Alex McCarthy both had new deals established, although the closure of the transfer window means that it is unlikely - unless we've misinterpreted the terms of McCarthy's loan - that he will be able to stay until the end of the season. His back-up keeper Richard Martin headed out for match practice at Grays Athletic.

Overall though, the Glovers squad resembles roughly what it did going into the transfer window, which as we hinted at the start of the month may have been the best that the club can have hoped for, with no rumours of bids for any of their current playing squad. As suspected, trying to find decent players on free transfers halfway through the season was a tricky task - even the one that manager Terry Skiverton did find - midfielder Arron Davies - turned out to be a false dawn.

A full League One Deadline Day round-up will be on this site later tonight.

Incoming: Owain Tudur Jones (Norwich City, one month loan until February 27th)

New Loan Deals: Shaun MacDonald (Swansea City, six month loan), Alex McCarthy (Reading, one month loan extension until circa end-February)

New Contract Extensions: Terrell Forbes (six month deal), Jean-Paul Kalala (six month deal).

Outgoing: Sam Lechmere (released), Louis Lavers (released), Andy Lindegaard (turned down contract), George O'Callaghan (released)

Loaned Out: Richard Martin (Grays Athletic)

1 February 2010 : Transfer Deadline Day: Ex-Glovers Round-Up
A couple of weeks ago, we covered the first half of the January transfer window, as it affected former Yeovil Town players. Now with the transfer window due to close at 5.00p.m. tonight (England only - other countries are staying open, and in some cases up until midnight) it's worthwhile having a look at what the second half of the month has brought ex-Glovers.

Striker Leon Best is the biggest Glovers-related bit of transfer news on Deadline Day so far, heading to play for Newcastle United on a three-and-a-half year deal after almost three years with Coventry City. The fee is undisclosed but is likely to be a significant one.

One of the more eyebrow-raising transfers came on Friday when left-back Michael Rose, who was included in the PFA Team Of The Year during Yeovil Town's League Two title winning season of 2004-05, left Stockport County on loan to Norwich City. Rosey had plenty of detractors at Huish Park, but there's little doubt that he will have made a good first impression at Carrow Road, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 win over Hartlepool United.

Goalkeeper Steve Collis was formally given a six month contract with Bristol City last week, having been on trial at Ashton Gate, following his release by Crewe Alexandra earlier this month.

Former winger Brian McDermott is now the permanent manager of Championship side Reading, having been caretaker manager for some while, and will now have to recruit in a new Chief Scout to cover his former role at the club. We've already covered the unveiling of another former player Jerry Gill at non-league minnows Weymouth. Two former Glovers Stephen Reed and Jake Reid gave him a good start with a 3-1 relegation-six-pointer win over Lewes. This means it's nosebleed time for the Muff as they occupy 21st place in the Conference South table.

Midfielder Anthony Barry, who we reported as signing for Wrexham in our last update, has already left Wales and headed to Conference North leaders Fleetwood Town. A three year contract, and a tripling of his salary from what he was on at Wrexham may have swung the balance, although we'll have to wait and see whether Fleetwood are the latest non-league side to operate on a boom'n'bust cycle as they chase the dream.

Striker Marvin Brown has teamed up with Steve Thompson again, as the Bristolian heads to Cornwall and Truro City. Meanwhile defender Aaron Brown has signed for AFC Telford on a short term deal. They expect this to be only a temporary stay, with their manager admitting that a Football League club may eventually take Brown on.

Midfielder Tommy Doherty, who left Wycombe Wanderers earlier this month has signed for Hungarian side Ferencvaros until the end of the season, with an option for a further extension. Striker Kevin Gall has done enough to get his deal with York City extended until the end of the season, as he aims for his second Conference National winners medal. Striker Wayne Gray, most recently with AFC Hornchurch, has joined Grays. And finally we'll be finding out if striker Rene Howe was any good in a couple of weeks time when he heads down to Huish Park as part of a Gillingham side. The Glovers didn't quite land him from Peterborough United over the summer, but the Gills have taken him on loan.

More Deadline Day Updates For Ex-Glovers: Striker Scott Ramsay has moved from Isthmian Premier Division side Hastings United to Sussex County League Division Two side Rye United. Another more legendary striker Howard Forinton has gone from Banbury United to Woodford United on loan. With their transfer embargo recently lifted, Salisbury City have re-entered the market, and today Ronnie Bull joins fellow ex-Glover Chris Giles, recently signed after his release from Crawley Town, at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

Late Deals On Deadline Day For Ex-Glovers: Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic transfers to Stoke City for £3.25 million quid. Latvian Andrejs Stolcers ditches minnows Bath City for the might of Hayes and Yeading. Striker Craig Davies decides to stay at Port Vale for the rest of the season, rather than head back to Brighton and Hove Albion. Another striker James Walker leaves Southend United and signs on a free transfer for Gillingham. Yet another striker Aleksander Prijovic leaves Derby County and heads to Swiss side FC Sion on a free transfer.

1 February 2010 : Nathan Jones Brings Bite To The Glovers Defence
One of the most legendary defenders of the 1960s and 1970s was Norman 'Bite Yer Legs' Hunter. The former Leeds United, Bristol City and Barnsley defender got his unusual nickname due to the sort of x-rated tackles that would make former Glover Colin Miles blush.

Current Yeovil Town left-back Nathan Jones appears to be using Hunter as his role model - he got rid of Huddersfield Town goalscorer Nathan Eccleston on Saturday by biting his knee! The two players accidentally collided in the aftermath of a second half tackle.

Initially it looked like Jones had come off far worse through a head collision, but Eccleston was the one who had to be subbed - the Welshman's teeth had gone through the Liverpool loan player's knee.

Speaking to the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Eccleston confirmed that the incident was accidental, and could see the funny side of it:

"Perhaps it was the only way he could stop me, and I'm off to get a tetanus injection! But seriously, I think he slipped as he came into tackle, and as I wriggled to get past, my knee came into contact with his mouth. He came up and gave me an apology. I accepted it and asked if he still had all his teeth, which thankfully, he has. I went off the to the dressing room to get it stitched with the intention of going back on, but by the time it was sorted out, the manager had decided to bring on Lee Novak."

Huddersfield played around five minutes of the second half with ten men on the field as a result, but it made little difference, with Eccleston's goal ultimately proving to be the winner.

1 February 2010 : Transfer Deadline Day: All Quiet On The Glovers Front
Today marks the final day of the January transfer window, with Yeovil Town unlikely to be doing any major trading during the day. Football League clubs and Premier League clubs have until 5.00p.m. today to conclude their business. Scottish League clubs have until midnight.

With Owain Tudur Jones having arrived from Norwich City just before the weekend just gone, and the Arron Davies registration having hit the buffers, manager Terry Skiverton told BBC Somerset on Saturday that he is not expecting anything to happen of significance today. Terry was asked about the chances of a reverse on Arron's situation or any new players arriving:

"I can't comment on either at the moment. I've brought Owain (Tudur Jones) in, to cater for the JP (Kalala) scenario, and if nothing happens with Arron (Davies) then I don't see anything else happening within the window."

The pre-match radio coverage suggested that Arron's agents were seeking to appeal to the Football League regarding their decision to block Arron's player registration last week. Our assumption would be that the League would give them the same advice that was given to Wycombe Wanderers striker Alex Revell. Whether the club would want to add a seventh loan to their books though is very debatable. However, Skivo's comments suggest that contrary to the club's initial statement, the door is not entirely closed.

Either way, Arron's situation appears to be irrelevant to the transfer window. Free agents are not governed by today's deadline, and if the same path is followed as with Wycombe's Revell, then this would be an emergency loan deal, which would be possible in around eight days time, assuming Arron's agent doesn't get the mess sorted out today.
