Wed 31st March 1999 : Patmore Nets For England

According To The Robin's Nest, the unofficial Cheltenham Town Web Site, Warren Patmore scored a 34th minute goal in last nights 1-1 draw with Holland last night. The goal, which came after a cross by Kingstonian's Gary Patterson, gave England the lead but an equaliser on the hour from Dick Knijn gave the Dutch Side an equaliser.

Steve Stott also started the game and produced the cross for a Danzey goal that was disallowed, and Stott later made way with eleven minutes left for Murray Fishlock. Warren Patmore was involved in a series of other chances for England but the visitors couldn't quite wrap the game up.

England Line-Up: Steve Book (Cheltenham Town), Simon Shaw (Doncaster Rovers), Paul Underwood (Rushden), Michael Danzey (Woking), Mark Smith (Stevenage Borough), Tim Ryan (Southport), Steve Stott (Yeovil Town), Garry Butterworth (Rushden), Warren Patmore (Yeovil Town), Neil Grayson (Cheltenham Town), Gary Patterson (Kingstonian). Subs: Andy Comyn (Hednesford Town for Patmore 90), Paul Gothard (Dagenham & Redbridge, Not Used), Lee Charles (Hayes for Grayson 66), Barry Williams (Nuneaton for Underwood 79), Murray Fishlock (Yeovil Town for Stott 79)

Tues 30th March 1999 : Cheltenham and Leek Dates Fixed

The final two missing dates in the first team fixture calendar have been fixed. The Cheltenham match moves from Saturday April 10th to Thursday April 22nd, due to Cheltenham's involvement in the FA Trophy. Meanwhile the Leek Town fixture moves to Thursday April 29th, the last Thursday of the season and an exact repeat of the fixture date for last season. Let's hope the result is better! The revised fixture list is here.

Tues 30th March 1999 : Reserves Sneak Past Bishop Sutton

Another win for the Reserves tonight in the Screwfix Direct Premier Division as they stole a last gasp winner at Bishop Sutton tonight, winning 3-2. In a fast and chaotic match, the home side took the lead five minutes before half time, but must have wished they hadn't when Yeovil woke up and Damien Franklin scrambled home an equaliser. Minutes later a rasping Arthur Appleton drive from 25 yards beat the keeper on his near post to give Yeovil a half time lead.

In the second half Chris Moors had missed a penalty after Franklin was needlessly upended, and Bishop Sutton's headed equaliser seemed to be giving them a deserved point until an injury time shot from Yeovil was deflected onto the crossbar and Franklin ran through to nudge the rebound home with the last kick of the game.

Tues 30th March 1999 : Stotty For England

Steve Stott has been confirmed as being in the England starting line-up for the match in Holland tonight. He joins Warren Patmore, who will be making his second consecutive starting appearance. Murray Fishlock is on the bench.

Expected England Line-Up (v Holland at Genemuiden): Book (Cheltenham), Shaw (Doncaster), Underwood (Rushden & Diamonds), Danzey (Woking), Smith (Stevenage), Ryan (Southport), Stott (Yeovil), Butterworth (Rushden & Diamonds), Patmore (Yeovil), Grayson (Cheltenham), Patterson (Kingstonian).

Tues 30th March 1999 : Brown escapes with FA fine

Kevan Brown has escaped from further match bans for reaching eleven bookings. He was suspended for the game with Hayes, a game he would not have played in due to his hamstring problems. However, his FA hearing brought only the single match ban plus a fine. He will therefore be eligible for selection for the game with Welling on Easter Saturday.

Mon 29th March 1999 : Pennock Out, Rigby In

Tony Pennock's injury sustained against Hayes has been officially confirmed as a broken rib, and the first choice goalkeeper will be out for at least three weeks. His likely replacement is Malcolm Rigby, who luckily enough was signed on Conference forms just prior to the transfer deadline.

Rigby is aged 23 (born 13th March 1976) is about 6'1" and was once on the books of Nottingham Forest following a 50K transfer from neighbours County. He was last seen playing for Ilkeston who he joined at the start of the 1996/97 season, initially on loan. He currently trains full time with Lincoln City. If selected, he will make his debut against Welling United on Easter Saturday.

Sat 27th March 1999 : The Season Takes Its Toll

Tony PennockA big team selection headache could be awaiting Colin Lippiatt over the Easter weekend, as the combination of injuries and suspensions will inevitably weaken the side that faces Welling. Rob Cousins, Murray Fishlock and Paul Steele all face single match suspensions for the visit of Welling, and so are certainly ruled out.

However, the biggest worry must be the the suspected broken rib that crocked Tony Pennock with 25 minutes remaining of todays game with Hayes. Tony was due to travel to hospital in Swansea for x-rays on his chest. Should the results produce our worst fears, then Yeovil could be without Pennock for the rest of the season. With the transfer deadline passing last Thursday, either Tim Malessa or new signing Malcolm Rigby from Nottingham Forest will be likely to make their debut for the first team.

The team selection problems are compounded by Owen Pickard coming off yesterday with a groin injury, although the severity of the injury is not clear. Kevan Brown and Al-James Hannigan were also unavailable for selection yesterday, but it is hoped that their hamstring injuries will be cleared next Saturday.

Meanwhile, it seems we shouldn't hold our breath for the return of Matt Hayfield. Following several aborted attempts for a comeback, Matt is going for a scan on his leg this week, as although he says he has no problems running and doing general training, hard tackling is proving too painful to contemplate a comeback.

Sat 27th March 1999 : Fishlock and Stott added to England Squad

Murray Fishlock and Steve Stott have been added to the England semi-professional squad due to face Holland on Tuesday night. The pair had been listed as reservists in the previous fixture against Italy, although were not called up. They join Warren Patmore in the squad and will no doubt make club history if they all land on the pitch at the same time.

Sat 27th March 1999 : Yeovil Quintet Make Wanderers Shortlist

Yeovil Town have no less than five players shortlisted for the annual Middlesex Wanderers tour this summer. In addition to Steve Stott and Kevan Brown who went on tour last season to Brunei and Myanmar, Warren Patmore, Rob Cousins and Murray Fishlock have all been shortlisted for a squad that will play two matches in India this summer.

The Middlesex Wanderers players have in the past been selected not only for their footballing abilities but also for their character on and off the field, and their ability to act as ambassadors for the country. To have five players shortlisted is alone a huge honour for the club, and judging by Kevan and Steve's experiences of last summer it is a tour that the players clearly enjoy.

Sat 27th March 1999 : Late Late Hayes Dent Title Hopes

Hayes left it late, very late today. Not only did their team only arrive at Huish Park at 2:40pm, on a route plan that nearly took them across the Severn Bridge, they left it late on the pitch, with a 92nd minute equaliser cancelling out an Owen Pickard 5th minute goal. A full report is here

Thurs 25th March 1999 : Loan Deals Fall Through

Colin Lippiatt's last minute bid to bring two loan players to Huish Park, to fill gaps in the squad caused by injury, have fallen through on Transfer Deadline Day. The pair, a central defender and a striker, are rumoured to be at Nationwide League First Division side Bristol City, although the Western Gazette reported the club as being Premiership side Southampton.

The lack of any transfer deadline signings means that Yeovil's defence is still weakened by the suspension of Kevan Brown and the hamstring injury of Al-James Hannigan. As a result, young reservist Paul Steele has been drafted into the first team squad in case Hannigan fails to pull through.

Thurs 25th March 1999 : Pickard Is "Not Leaving Yeovil"
Owen Pickard

According to the Western Gazette, Colin Lippiatt has rubbished claims that England International Owen Pickard is likely to leave Yeovil at the end of the season under the Bosman Ruling. The claims were made in The Clarion, following rumours that have circulated since Slough Manager Graham Roberts watched his old team play at Forest Green. Al-James Hannigan was also linked in with the story in The Clarion and he has insisted his future lies with Yeovil.

Although it is worrying that two such talented players are out of contract so soon to the end of the season, it seems unlikely, with the greatest respect to Slough, that two "guaranteed" first-teamers would want to drop down a league, and so it would be surprising if there was any substance in The Clarion story.

Tues 23rd March 1999 : Kids Go Free At Welling Match

The "One Plus One" scheme was launched in the club programme yesterday. This scheme allows a child to be admitted free of charge when accompanied by a paying adult, and is similar to a successful scheme implemented at Doncaster Rovers where attendances have rocketed this season.

The first trial of this scheme will be for the Welling United home match on Easter Saturday. The club say that they will "evaluate the success or otherwise of this concept, and then decide whether we should continue it for the remainder of this campaign". There are also strong rumours that, should the idea be a success, it may be implemented permanently next season.

Tues 23rd March 1999 : Brown Sweats on FA Decision
Kevan Brown

Kevan Brown, out of tonight's game with a hamstring injury, is sweating on an FA disciplinary committee hearing on Friday for reaching eleven bookings this season. Kevan is assuming that he will miss Saturday's game with Hayes, but may miss two games if the FA's decision is consistent with other players reaching eleven bookings. Kevan is hoping that the FA will take his previously unblemished disciplinary record into account.

Tues 23rd March 1999 : Makeshift Yeovil Ease Past Southport

A Yeovil beat Conference strugglers Southport 3-1 tonight, despite losing Kevan Brown before the game with a sore hamstring and fellow defender Al-James Hannigan over the half time break. Warren Patmore scored a first half goal, but then turned defender in the second half to plug the gaps. Owen Pickard and Murray Fishlock were also on the scoresheet. A full report is here.
