Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC After The 3-1 Win Against Newport County

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to local journalist Chris Spittles in an interview for BBC Somerset after his side had won 3-1 at Newport County on Friday August 3rd 2012.

CS: Gary, a decent win tonight and some good goals to show as well.

GJ: Yes, there were some well worked goals. This was a strong game with them (Newport County) trying to be ready for Saturday, as they start their (Conference National) season a week earlier than us. They've got some players that have been around a bit, so a little bit of experience. They've obviously got a group together that they think will do well, and paid a little bit out for them. So it was a real good test and we came through that test and did a little bit more. I was really pleased with how solid we were, but also how potent we were in our attacks.

CS: The attacking options that you've got, you seem to be very pleased with. You had three different goalscorers tonight as well.

GJ: Yes, it was, and of course there was still Gav (Williams) who didn't play and Keanu (Marsh-Brown) who didn't play, and obviously Webby (Byron Webster) who is a threat from set plays. It wasn't a first team in either half, but today we just wanted to give a few that missed out at Llanelli and missed out on 90 minutes, to give them their 90 minutes this time. The others all played 45 minutes. So it's been goods. I know all managers say it's been a good exercise, but it was because I can see our pattern being pretty consistent at the moment as to what we're looking for.

CS: Webster and Williams both missed out with injuries. How serious are those two?

GJ: Well they're OK. They're not serious serious. Gav is just Gav, and his calves are a bit sore, so we have to rest him every now and again, and we have to manage it. Then Webby (Byron Webster) took a hell of a whack in the ribs that were already sore, but we're just precautionary in keeping him out, because it's just the bruising that needs to go away. We'll have an X-ray on Monday just to make sure it's nothing more serious, but they'll be okay come the start of the season.

CS: No Marsh-Brown tonight. He was on the bench but you chose not to use him. Was that just resting him?

GJ: No, he wasn't really on the bench. We just wanted him to do a little bit of work at half time, because he's got a sore groin. He's been working hard this week, and being a young lad he found it hard to get through all the games. We asked him to do a lot of running as well obviously within the games. So we needed to rest him today, just to rest his groins, and that's what we've done. We didn't really want to bring him on. Sometimes you might be down to ten men, so we thought we'd see how we cope after what was a poor tackle (on Rohan Ince). We don't know the result of how bad the injury is, but it was certainly a poor tackle for a pre-season friendly, however competitive you want to be.

CS: It was a tackle on Rohan Ince, and it was his ankle the physio was looking at when he limped off, so is that a bit of a concern?

GJ: Yes, I think that was a little bit higher than that actually. It caught him on the shin, and when your leg goes numb, you always think the worst. So we don't really know how it is. But we'll keep our fingers crossed that he's going to be fit and available for when the season comes round. Hopefully it's not a really bad injury. But he's in a bit of pain in there and he's obviously very upset that he's had to come all of this way and miss part of the game.

CS: So what's the plan with that - wait for the swelling to go down and then have a scan on that leg?

GJ: Well, we're waiting for the swelling to come up at the minute, first! But if it does then we'll manage it. We'll have a look and then he'll go for an X-ray probably with Webby. But we'll have a look anyway. I really am keeping my fingers crossed because he's going to be a big player for us, and we're going to need him.

CS: James Clarke played again this evening. When have you got to make a decision on him?

GJ: Well, when I'm ready, I think. Obviously the lad has got other options. He's got options because a lot of the other non-league teams know him anyway. So I'm just going to have a chat with him afterwards and we'll see where we go. I haven't really made my mind up, because every now and again he looks okay. Today was the first day that we were able to give him 90 minutes, and that was good and he came through it okay. He got a bit of cramp towards the end, but he hung on in there and he did well.

CS: The other thing people want to know in pre-season is your choice of captain. Jamie McAllister had the armband again. Has that been rubber-stamped now?

GJ: Not really. I think he keeps it in his bag! (laughs) I think he takes it home and then he brings it in with him! But there's a fair chance, isn't there. I don't think anyone would begrudge him if he was given it. I'm not thinking of that. People have got to be selected in the first team, first before they become the captain. I don't want any of them thinking that they've cracked it.
