Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC After Marek Stech Signed

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Somerset reporter Dan Albutt on Thursday 5th July 2012 after he had signed goalkeeper Marek Stech.

GJ: Yes, it's a good signing (to get Marek Stech) and obviously people who were here before me know how good he is. We know what he's like off the field. But we also know what he's like off the field. He's a good leader for a young lad. And he's ours. It's a two year contract and if we make him a top class keeper, then maybe we'll get something for him.

DA: Absolutely. How important was it for you to get a goalkeeper that was belonging to the club. It's been a long time since you haven't had a loan goalkeeper at Yeovil, hasn't it?

GJ: Well it is, but it's not always easy to find the standard of goalkeeper you're looking for, at the budget that you can afford. So sometimes, especially with a goalkeeper you have to go with a low budget cost, but a high quality goalkeeper. On this occasion we've been able to do both. So it's a really good deal.

The club have done great, and obviously Terry (Skiverton) and Darren (Way) were very persuasive that he's the top goalkeeper and that he's the one that we want, as they worked with him before. When he came into the place, I realised that the lads that had worked with him were very happy to see him. So that's good news.

DA: It's one of the most important positions on the field of course, as if you've got a solid keeper behind you, it just makes things better for the team, as everyone has full confidence in the goalkeeper behind them.

GJ: Yes, it is, and to be fair Yeovil have been finding some decent keepers along the way, albeit that they are loan keepers. But they've all gone on and done well. So hopefully the keeper that is ours now will do well for us, and then go on and do well in the future. Meanwhile, we've got a couple of good years with him. He's only 22 years old, but he's got an old head on his shoulders, and he'll be really handy when we need a man at the back there.

DA: You mentioned about the experience that he has there as well. That's an important thing. Did you face much competition from other clubs? That's testament to Yeovil that you can attract players like that.

GJ: Yes, there was a lot of competition, like West Ham had a lot of competition when they took him originally, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham who were all after him, as a very young Czech goalkeeper. But we knew that if we could get him in and if we could talk to him, and if we could guarantee him first team football, which not every team can, then what you hope is that Yeovil ticks more boxes than anyone else for him.

That's what happened. Credit to him, as for the last couple of weeks that we've been talking to him, he's always been very positive about coming to Yeovil. We kept our fingers crossed and we kept negotiating and we kept working hard and the club came up trumps, because there's no doubt that if not the best, then he'll be one of the best goalkeepers in our division.

DA: There's another defender signed as well, in Byron Webster, who is someone you know well from Northampton.

GJ: Yes, I do and Byron has been unlucky for the last couple of years. He's had a couple of metatarsal breaks, which take a long time to heal, just when he was going okay. I know Sean O'Driscoll really liked him when he was at Doncaster. He also went out to the Czech Republic to play some games. He came back and I took him on loan for a little while to get him some fitness. I was at Northampton, and that's where he came, and then he broke his metatarsal, and so he missed out for half the season.

I've been lucky enough that Northampton probably haven't seen enough of him. I think that I have and I think he's a good addition. He's six-foot-six or whatever he is, and we're going to look decent in the corridor with Marek (Stech) and Byron (Webster). And they're both brave lads as well, and so they're both big and brave.
