Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC After Jamie McAllister Signed

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Bristol reporter Richard Hoskin about the signing of left-back Jamie McAllister on Thursday 28th June 2012. The interview was conducted prior to the later announcement of striker James Hayter arriving at the club.

GJ: I've got a lot of youngsters. I need a little bit of experience about the place. I need a bloke about the place. He's had hundreds of league games under his belt. He had a promotion with me at Bristol (City). I brought him there in the first place, and also we had a few seasons in the Championship. He became a very good signing for Bristol City, and so obviously he's a very good signing for me at Yeovil.

People have to move on when they get in the later stages of their career. They're looking for something a bit different because he's 34 years of age now - young, if you like! He passed a very very stringent medical, which was good, and I know that he's looking forward to it.

RH: I was going to mention that. It's a two year contract, so you've obviously got a lot of faith in him, to give him that kind of deal.

GJ: Yes, it's a two year contract, but he's got to play a certain amount of games as well. I normally do that with all the lads who are 33 or 34 years old. But he's very fit anyway. But with all of those, if for whatever reason they don't quite reach their certain number of games, then you review it at the end of the year. But it's a two year contract, because he is fit. He is going to be a first team defender, and we're excited that we've got someone who has got that amount of experience around in our midst.

RH: Is he a potential captain for next season?

GJ: Well, if they can understand him! Maybe! We'll have to see if some of the locals can understand him (with his Scottish accent). But he's certainly got that mentality. I know what you mean. He's captain material, and even if he wasn't wearing the armband, he'd walk around and play like he was the captain anyway. So that's ideal for me. If he gets it, then good luck to him, but we'll wait and see how pre-season goes. He's certainly one who will tick all the boxes for that.

RH: Is this hopefully the first of a few announcements before the players return next week?

GJ: Yes, it is. There's a few little bits and pieces that have still got to happen. Only little bits of negotiating that are not real deal-breakers anyway. There will be one or two lads in the next couple of days. What I am really pleased with is that myself, Terry Skiverton and Darren Way, we've worked very hard over the summer. It didn't sound like it when I was on the ship and on holiday, but I certainly was working hard, as they were.

We've managed to get a good strong squad of sixteen lads that will be announced at the time, on the second of July when we come back, because we wanted to make sure that we had 90 percent of our squad in place on the day that we're starting and we've managed to do that. So we're really excited by that, because it means that we can get them all into a philosophy and the tactics early, and get them all fit at the same time. That's the best way to do it, to hit the ground running.
