Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC After Three Players Signed Up

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Bristol Sports Editor Geoff Twentyman after he signed three players up, in an interview broadcast on BBC Somerset's 'Drive' programme on Tuesday 29th May 2012.

GT: Gary, I guess that winning football matches is what football managers enjoy the most. But signing players as well - you must be pretty happy today to have got three players?

GJ: Yes, I am because normally you can't announce too much until the start of the pre-season in July. But because I was able to give deadlines to players that we'd offered contracts to at our club, and I gave deadlines to players that were thinking about coming here, that deadline was here (today) as I'm going on holiday tomorrow, so therefore that was the deadline. The three that I wanted to come back to me did, and I'm very excited by all three of them. The two young lads are very exciting, and the old man of the party - Richard Hinds - is hopefully somebody that we all know. That's a great signing as well because he was terrific for us last season.

GT: We'll go through the three guys in a moment, but how important is it to get your business done early, because there's a lot of players out there, aren't there?

GJ: There's a lot of players. The good ones are going to get taken early. What we've got to make sure is that we don't get left with the ones that being left, if you like. Again, because I gave all our players deadlines, when that deadline finished quite early - that was about two or three weeks ago - I was able to go around the country meeting agents, meeting players. I've done quite a bit of work in the last couple of weeks, and fortunately the early bird catches the worm, and I think we've got a couple of young worms, that's for sure! I'm very pleased that we've managed to get them to sign up.

GT: Tell me about Sam Foley?

GJ: Sam Foley is one that is probably a bit of a late developer in football. But the fans will see on the Youtube site the sorts of goals that he scores. He can play in midfield and he can play up front, and he can play in the hole. He's a very good footballer, not only in scoring goals, but in creating goals. He's similar to like Gavin (Williams) plays really. He's young enough, he's keen, and he's looking forward to it very much. He just showed me that he wanted to prove himself at this level, and I think and he thinks that he is ready for that.

GT: We all like an exciting wide man - an exciting winger. Tell me about Keanu Marsh-Brown - how do you pronounce his Christian name?

GJ: Well, I've been calling him Keanu (as in Keanu Reeves) so I hope it's that! But yes, Keanu is a young lad, who I watched play a couple of times at Milton Keynes. I've been watching him as a youngster. My own son (Lee Johnson) came through the Arsenal set-up, so I know how many boys they've got there. I came through the Fulham set-up and they were the two clubs that we knew of (that Marsh-Brown had played for as a youth player) so we knew the people that were around, and we know that after seeing him, how exciting he is.

He's only nineteen now. He was an England international. He's sort of lost his way a little bit, and we need to just bring him back in line and say that professional football is what you're trying to make a living at, so make sure you get your head down. If I'm the one to get you back to the way that Arsenal and Fulham thought that you were going to end up, then we've got a great player. He's very quick and he's very strong, and he can play on either wing or up front. He's one of those players who puts bums on seats. Again, I'm excited and I can't wait for him to join us in pre-season.

GT: That's good news. Three players today - how many more players do you need and how close are you to bringing more people in?

GJ: Quite close, to be fair. There's a couple that have got a few more days on their deadline, because I didn't meet them until later. But I'm talking to players all the time now, and I want to be able to go away and go on holiday, knowing that I think we've got six or seven players now actually signed up, and with these three that makes it ten. But we're still looking, and I've still got to make sure that we get enough players, so that when we do bring loans in - and every club is going to have to do that because of their budgets - then I want to make sure that those loans are long term, so that we can Yeovilify them. So we'll leave some space for two or three good loans, and if we can get that right, then that just makes for a very potent squad.

GT: And when you're away on holiday, does the phone get switched off, or is the phone on most of the time?

GJ: Well ... (laughs) ... it's on silent if I'm near the missus! Then I walk away for an ice-cream so I can take the call. I find it very hard to turn the phone off. But if my wife finds it then it normally ends up at the bottom of the swimming pool, or something. But anyway, I'll try to keep it away from her, and keep on the phone because I don't want to lose that Wayne Rooney when he comes up, so I'll be sunning myself, but I'll still be keeping one eye on the mobile!
