Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC As Part Of The Build-Up To Huddersfield

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Somerset reporter Dan Albutt on Thursday 3rd May 2012 as part of the build-up to the away trip at Huddersfield Town.

GJ: I think that every game that you go into, you're always looking for a positive result. You feel a lot better over the weekend after a win than you do after a defeat. But they're a strong team, and whoever you rest, if they do rest people, there will be people coming in for that game who are good players, and trying to compete to get into that team for the play-off semi-finals, and then obviously the final.

So they've got a lot to play for. Their players have - obviously it doesn't matter to the club, as far as win, lose or draw. But it certainly does matter to the players. So we want to be ready for it, and we want to keep our run of form going, because the run of form has been decent, barring a couple of blips.

DA: What sort of a game are you expecting from Huddersfield? You're obviously safe, but you want to move up the table. They're in the play-offs, but bar a little bit of mathematics in the final positions, do you think they'll approach this one differently and rest players?

GJ: Well, they might rest players, because I think he (Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson) has already said that. He can't afford to lose his better players. If they play and get injured or hurt themselves, or obviously they're going to be a little bit short for their semi-finals and final, although they have got players that can come in. But of course you've got to be careful about who you play now, and what sort of games they have.

But we've got to be competitive and that's what we're going to be. They'll need us to be competitive to give them a good game leading up to the play-off semi-final. If we go out there and play like a five-a-side team and they play like a five-a-side team, that's going to be doing nobody any good. So we've got to go there and we've got to compete, and that's exactly what we'll do.

DA: They won't want to lose on their own patch, of course, going into the play-offs. That could take away a lot of their momentum.

GJ: Yes, they don't want to take away their momentum. As I said to you before, their players will want to make sure that they've got their names pencilled in for some big games coming up. Some of them might even be playing for contracts. If they get themselves into the Championship, then that could be even better. So there's still a lot to play for.

DA: Since you've come back here, as the season has ended, Yeovil would be fifth. So it could be you going into the play-offs.

GJ: How do you know that? (laughs) Brilliant. It's true. Funnily enough we had a league table sent to us, and we were very appreciative that in the last 20 games of the new regime - 20 or 21 games - that we'd be fifth. So if this was the start of the season, which obviously we wish it was, then it would be Christmas time after 20 games and we'd be fifth in the table. That would give you a great opportunity to push on for the next part of the season.

Unfortunately, this is the second half of the season. But it's credit to everyone - Terry (Skiverton), Darren (Way), Nathan (Jones), the players and the new players that have come in. We've really worked hard. We've had a couple of blips that we were a bit disappointed with, but this group has put themselves in fifth position over 20 games, and that is credit to this football club, and it's what got us out of trouble.

DA: That's going to give you great confidence to go into the new season of course, and it gives you a great thing to build on.

GJ: It does and it gives us something to talk to the players here about, in case any of them are thinking that pastures new might help them get success. I'm saying that the lads were part of this success, and if fifth is not good enough for you then that's going to be hard. There are teams above us like Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United and Charlton, and teams below us like Huddersfield.

So it's a very strong league when you're looking at competing with the top ten, and we've managed to do that. So as I say, we have used that as a positive to try to say to people stay with us. We are going to try to compete and we will be competitive and we need you as part of it.
