Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC Just Before Kick-Off Against Rochdale

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Bristol reporter Andy Howard just before kick-off against Rochdale on Saturday 7th April 2012. Yeovil went on to win the game 3-1.

AH: Gary, an obvious motivation today is to reach fifty (points), isn't it?

GJ: Yes, although I'm already fifty (years old) and just over! (laughs)

AH: You don't look a day past it!

GJ: Thanks very much. That's what I was waiting for! Yes, fifty points is the key normally. But as I keep saying, and I say it every week, that fourth from bottom team keeps hanging on in there. They're all scratching and biting and scrapping to try to keep themselves in touch. That one team at the moment, which is Wycombe at the moment, are keeping themselves in touch.

But you'd be really really disappointed if you went down with fifty points. If we did get this win or the next win, then that does take you well into mid-table. That's where you need to be with a lot of teams below you, as we've said before.

AH: And you've got a lot to make up for after the Hartlepool game here.

GJ: Well, yes we have in as much as we don't like losing a game and we didn't play that well, to be honest. But I'm not sure about having a lot to make up for - do you know what I mean? We've got to be careful about that, because they're all professional teams, and they're all decent. We'd won five home games on the trot before that; did I need to remind you on that one? So I nobody owes anyone anything, except on occasions an apology, which I gave, because I thought that I didn't enjoy that game either. But you don't get to play like Barcelona every week - unless you are Barcelona!

That's just the way it is. It's important for us to know that we're at this level. The lads have done great over the last fifteen or sixteen games. I've been really pleased with their energy and their concentration for me, and for the management team. So hopefully we can do it again today, and when we do get that next win, we'll look back on it and say actually that was a really good end of season campaign.

AH: Finally I've just spoken to two fans who were enjoying a cider in the hospitality tent. They both said the same word - 'magician' - when they were talking about you.

GJ: I thought you were going to say midget there for a minute, and you were going to get a right-hander! (laughs) Magician? Well that's great, and that's nice. But I haven't finished my trick yet! Until we get these three points, this trick is still on the go. We've all got to look at it and be careful.

But what we've got to do is to get the club together. If we can get the club together, and then everybody has got to trust each other. Actually some things are said sometimes, and you're thinking "What are they saying?" and sometimes it gives it credence if you come back on it, so the club sometimes don't say anything. Then you can't sometimes for legal reasons. So in the end everybody sort of mistrusts everybody for a little while.

I'm telling you now, I've come back here and the good thing is that I've been to five or six other clubs, and the grass is not greener, necessarily, on the other side. This club is as good as any, and it's as honest as any, and trustworthy. If I can get that out to all parties, then we're going to be a bigger, better, more efficient club.
