Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC As Part Of The Build-Up To Rochdale

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Somerset reporter Dan Albutt on Thursday 5th April 2012, as part of the build-up to the home match against Rochdale.

GJ: We've been saying that we want to pick up three points for two or three weeks now. We've got to be careful that the season doesn't pass us by. That fourth team from the bottom is still hanging on. We got a draw last week and they got a draw last week. There's still enough teams between us, and in fact we got another one, didn't we, in Preston, although I know it's only goals scored by us. But we've got to go into these games and enjoy them.

As Terry (Skiverton) said to the boys this morning, we've got to see the bigger picture. It's not just the game tomorrow that's the be-all and end-all. We want to keep trying to improve and keep trying to put our way of playing over to them, so that the ones that stay know exactly what we're going to be doing next year and what we're going to be trying to achieve. Then we'll add players to them. So they all know what they've got to do.

Every game is a big game still until you get that fifty points. Rochdale was our first game in the Football League, wasn't it, so I've always got positive thoughts when we play Rochdale. But you've also got to think that John Coleman has gone there. He's a man that can be very strong when his team is in trouble, and he's done well with teams that have been struggling for some years and he's got them to the other end of the table. So they won't be an easy team to beat, but we're at home, we've got our great support and we've got some decent players. We need a couple of them to hit a little bit of form and we'll be there or thereabouts.

DA: When you're looking at the League table and where Rochdale are at the moment as well, I guess that adds to it from your point of view. You won't want to give them the chance to move up the table and close the gap on you as well.

GJ: No, we don't. I don't know how much Rochdale will look at the League table and see the team in 15th as being somebody that they can catch, which I think is where we are. But they will definitely see it as a big three points - not necessarily in relationship to us - but with the teams that are immediately above them. They're obviously trying to get into that fifth from bottom spot, which I think Walsall are in at the moment, and that's the place that they will feel that they can make up ground and catch.

DA: What do you expect from them on the weekend because of their position? I guess they're going to have to come at you as well as anyone would?

GJ: Yes, well there's two ways of doing it. There's a calm assurance, and there's a "Don't panic, Mr Mainwaring!" type of game, where they could come here and realise that they need to win the game. Rochdale have got to win all of their remaining games, I suspect, and this is their first chance of getting their first win under their belts. But we can take advantage of that if they are in any way not up for that, or if they are in any way not good enough for that, or if we get an early goal. There's all types of scenarios.

But I respect them. He (John Coleman) has done a great job wherever he has been, and Rochdale have got some decent players as you would have seen when Yeovil went there last time. So we won't take them as it is. We'll go out there and we'll be professional, and try to do a proper job and come away, and if you do come away with a win on Saturday, you'll have to have earned it.

DA: It was nil-nil at Spotland in a game just before you returned.

GJ: Yes, I listened to that on the radio and Rochdale were having a lot of pressure towards the end. I listened to it on your radio station actually, Dan! I was listening to it on that occasion, and we know that they can be quite forceful and get some opportunities. They've got some recent players, but so have we.
