Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC After The 3-0 Defeat Against Charlton

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to local journalise Chris Spittles in an interview for BBC Somerset, after his side had been beaten 3-0 against Charlton Athletic on March 20th 2012.

GJ: We did come up short tonight. It was a horrendous mistake really that led to the first goal. We were playing neat and tidy, but without an end product really, and Charlton had the end product. At the end of the day, they scored three and we weren't able to get any of our chances. We hit the crossbar a couple of times and the centre-half (Bondz N'Gala) should have scored when he hit it at the goalkeeper. I don't think we deserved to get beat 3-0 but we didn't do enough to win the game, that's for sure. And we didn't do enough to draw the game either, so that is exactly how it went.

CS: You mentioned the first goal. Was it just a misjudgement from a young goalkeeper?

GJ: Yes, it was. It was a poor misjudgement, whether you are young or old. He has done really well for us but a lapse of concentration, a major misjudgement, and you find yourselves a goal down at the league leaders and we never quite got back from that.

CS: The second goal - in the second half you were still hopeful of getting something from the game, but then you just switched off from a set piece.

GJ: Yes, we did. They've got a couple of lads who are decent in the air. We were aware of that, but they took the free kick very quickly, and won two headers in our box. If you are second best twice in your own penalty area, then it normally leads to a goal.

CS: Charlton are the league leaders, and you have been on a tremendous run. Is it easy to chalk this one off and move on from this?

GJ: Well we've got to move on from it, but it doesn't stop you from being disappointed because we felt that we were in good enough form to come here and give it a real good go and give them a game. But the scoreline looks like we haven't given them a game. We certainly didn't get anywhere near how we've played in the last few weeks. Though people don't want to hear that. We've got to pick the boys up and we've got to make sure that we're ready for Saturday's home game.

CS: You'd never use it as an excuse, but you have got a small squad. Did you feel that there were some tired legs out there, after the efforts over the last few weeks?

GJ: Well, do you know what, I said I wouldn't embarrass the boys by saying that. So I'm not going to say that. I'm just going to leave that out. I've been hearing a lot of managers say that. If a lion came out of the stand and started chasing a few of my boys, they'd be running - don't worry about that! So it's a little bit of a mental state. Sometimes you can tell yourself that you're tired, so I'm not giving them that excuse, because they've got to turn up again on Saturday, and they've got to get away from that lion.
