Gary Johnson Speaks To The BBC As Part Of The Build-Up To Carlisle

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Bristol reporter Dan Albutt on Thursday 23rd February 2012 as part of the build-up to the away match at Carlisle United.

GJ: We've got to make it not so it's enjoyable, but we've got to make it not look like it's seven hours (from Yeovil to Carlisle). So we've got a few things planned, where we'll have a few competitions, and maybe a quiz - this, that and the other. We'll just be doing different things. We'll be talking football. We'll be showing them a video of Carlisle (from Monday's match against Brentford) as a shortened version. So we'll use the trip not just to sleep, but to get a little bit of work done in a classroom situation, albeit on a coach.

DA: And what are you expecting from Carlisle themselves?

GJ: Well they'll be hurting from their Brentford game. Me and Terry went down there to watch that game. I know it was on television, but we wanted the bigger picture. That was probably their poorest performance of the season, but we can't plan that that is going to happen again. So therefore we've got to make sure that we understand that they are a very strong side at home.

When we are playing these games, I put them in categories of A, B and C, with Category A being the more difficult game, B being the less difficult, and C being the ones where I think we've got to beat them. I won't make that public of course, but the only thing I will make public is that I put Carlisle away down as an 'A' game for us. So it's one of those games where you've got nothing to lose and people are not expecting you to win, but our boys are buzzing at the minute and they're showing very very good energy in training. We're going there with confidence, and we've got to believe that we can come away with a result.

DA: And if it is a positive result, will it be another 3-2 is the next question!

GJ: It doesn't matter does it - three points is three points. It doesn't do us much good on the line when it's 3-2, because you don't like the opposition scoring against you. But you want them to score goals, and unless you're Barcelona, sometimes the game is open. We don't ask for our boys to be open, but if you're scoring three goals every week then you should win football matches. Obviously that's what has happened. Now a team can put you under pressure, and it might be 0-0 or you might lose or win 1-0. We don't know how the game is going to go. But we're certainly not going to go anywhere and believe that we can't win the game.

DA: There are a couple of familiar names in their team. From a Yeovil point of view there's Andy Welsh of course, who came in after your first stint when you were here. Then there's Lee Miller who was at Bristol City, although again that was before you were there, wasn't it?

GJ: Yes, they're decent players - of course they are. Welshy (Andy Welsh) came on late in that game (between Brentford and Carlisle) when the game was already lost in the Brentford game. He's not been a regular, but it will depend on what shape Carlisle decide to play. I'm sure they'll bring (Lee) Miller back as he was sent off and they appealed against it, and they'll be disappointed that he hasn't been playing.

They've got some decent players, and if you let them play, and you think they're going to play like they did against Brentford, then you're going to come unstuck. They're a decent team. They're just outside the play-offs, and they'll see this game as a game that they can win and put themselves into a play-off position, or near it. I'm sure they can move into a play-off position, so we've got to be ready for their best.
