Darren Way talked to the Yeovil Town Clubcall Service on Monday 15th January 2001, three days after he scored the equaliser against Bath City in the FA Trophy Third Round 2-1 win. Clubcall: Joining us now is Darren Way, and Darren firstly lets look back at the win over Bath. It was a good victory to come from behind in a tough game.
Darren Way: Yes, we knew from the start that it was going to be a tough game. It's like a local derby and they were always going to be up for it. So to get a win when we thought it was going to be a draw or perhaps that we could have lost the game, then we've got to be happy with the result.
CC: Let's go through it - first half was even-stevens wasnt it?
DW: The first half to be honest - and I think all the lads will admit it - we could have played better football and we could have worked just that little bit harder. They had a few chances in the first half. I missed one right at the start where I thought I should have just kept it down and taken my time. But then they broke at the other end and had a few good chances. So in the end, we came in at half time at still 0-0, and we had to be happy with that.
CC: And into the second period, they actually took the lead.
DW: Yes, it wasn't long after kick-off and they scored a good goal. From their point of view, they worked hard, put a good ball in and it was a good header from their striker. As soon as we went 1-0 down I think that woke us up a bit. Nick had one that struck the crossbar and I thought it was going in, but we just got stronger from there.
CC: And you got the equaliser.
DW: Yes, Benty dummied it and left it for me. I just kept my head down, struck the ball well and luckily enough it went in. As soon as I scored, I didn't really want to celebrate - I just wanted to get back and have kick-off, and luckily enough we scored again three or four minutes after that. It was a great ball by Ben Smith, a good header by Benty. He added a lot to the Yeovil team when he came on. When we went in at half time the gaffer went mad just to gee us up a bit, because obviously following the Bolton game with the Kettering and Bath games, we weren't really up for it at the start. But the gaffer picked us up again, he inspired us and we went out there and did what we had to do. CC: But that's good that you are through. The FA Cup brings you all the glory, but you were never going to win the FA Cup but you've got a good chance in the Trophy.
DW: That's what the gaffer said before the game. This is a cup that we can win, but that there aren't going to be any mugs whoever we play. We knew that Bath were going to be up for it. In the papers beforehand they were saying that they'd got just as good players as us and were saying it was just down to fitness because they aren't full time players. Obviously we needed to go out there and work hard for each other because there's upsets to be made, and Weymouth beating Dagenham proved that. It's such a change of game, because it is a bit of a comedown when you are at Bolton with all our fans there - you get a bit carried away by it all. But then you come back to Yeovil. But to be fair I thought our fans were good all the way through and I thought the Bath fans were brilliant as well, so it was a great game to play in.
CC: The crowds are really picking up now, and I'm sure that you'll get even bigger crowds as the season wears on. DW: Yes, when we came into the dressing room after the Bolton game the lads were just talking about the fans. The noise they made was something else from the moment we came out. All the time we knew they were there with the noise they were making, and the chants they were coming up with. Playing for Yeovil is just getting better. I think the town is realising now that we're not just an average team. We all want to go out there and do well and win for each other and hopefully things can just carry on.
CC: Well finally well done for winning in the Trophy and obviously there's some big league matches coming up now.
DW: Yes, we've all got our minds set now on the Southport game - that's a big crunch game but we're just trying to take it all game after game. Southport did well against us last time, but to be honest I don't think we were playing at our best at their ground. So we've got to get one over on them and make sure we don't lose this unbeaten record we've got at home.
