Martin Baker interviewed central defender Terry Skiverton on Thursday 15th February 2001 following his return from his England Semi-Pro debut at Nene Park.

MB: You came back from the England game last night didnt you?

TS: Yes, I came back to Yeovil last night, because I had the Wednesday off.

MB: So how was the whole experience?

TS: It was a tremendous experience for me. It was one of those situations where it was just nice to get recognised. I didnt even know I was going to be starting - that was even more of an added bonus. There were a lot of good centre-halves there like Steve West who has had a really good season at Woking and Paul Ellender at Scarborough who has had a lot of interest shown in him by league clubs. There was also Tim Ryan, who I think is a very good player and also Jason Goodliffe. So there were some good centre-halves there and I looked at the players, and to be honest if Id started the game as a substitute, there wouldnt have been any complaints or moans from me. But to find myself starting and to have the manager show that kind of faith in me when I didnt even play in any of the trial games, was a great experience for me. When he named the team and I was in the starting line-up, I was absolutely delighted. It was a chance for me to express myself in a different environment and a different situation. The football here at Yeovil has been a case of scrapping because teams want to knock us over, but it was just nice to go out there with no pressure and to enjoy it. Thats not to say I dont enjoy playing for Yeovil though! Its just that theres been a lot more pressure of late.

MB: We had the game at Chester, and you would have got back from that something like nine or ten oclock at night. When did you go up to the England camp?

TS: We had to be in a hotel on Sunday for 12 oclock. So I went straight back to London and stayed with my family there. I met Warren in the morning and travelled up. It was quite a nerve-wracking experience because I only know a couple of the players. I know Gary Patterson, Geoff Pitcher and Tarkan Mustafa but there were a lot of players that I didnt know. We went straight in and trained on the Sunday afternoon. Normally Im used to having the Sunday off but we had a bit of a training session based around patterns of play and it was just a chance for everyone to get to know each other. We had a dinner that night and the day passed really fast. We got back and all of a sudden I decided it was time for bed!

MB: Well thats not surprising if youre used to having the day off.

TS: Yes, one minute we were in training, and next minute the day was over. Everything was run really professionally. Ever meal was at a set time, and after you finished every meal, the manager and his staff would tell you exactly what was happening. It was very regimented. But that said, the night before the game, they took us all out ten-pin bowling which was nice. It had been quite serious up until then, but it was almost like they were trying to relax everybody. Everyone had a bit of fun and had a joke and a laugh with it, which was what we needed.

MB: So whereabouts were you staying?

TS: It was the Marriott Hotel in Northampton. One of the days we were meant to be training using Rushden and Diamonds facilities but on the Monday, the weather was so bad that we went into a hall instead. It hampered our operations a little bit. But the hotel was lovely and all the facilities we used were first class.

MB: You had three of the Rushden and Diamonds players there in the squad. Was there much banter between you, Warren and the three Rushden players about the league?

TS: Yes, the first night I was there over dinner, Justin Jackson - who Id never spoken to before - said to me that he thought it was nice of us to keep the league interesting by losing up at Chester, so that there was something for both teams to play for at the end of the season! So everyone had a bit of a laugh at that. We didnt really talk about it too much but usually when we did it was in jest. But later a few of the lads were saying about a player who went on to get something like 15 caps for the England Semi-Pro side, so I said that I didnt mean to be rude, but I wanted to be in a situation where I was ineligible for next season! Hopefully I didnt come across too arrogant! I said Id like to bow out after the Highland League game with the idea that wed be in the Third Division!

MB: Youre going to be like Alan Shearer and retire from the international scene then?

TS: Yes, thats unless we did go up and the gaffer decided to get rid of me and transfer me to a Conference club! It could all backfire on me! Its just a good bit of banter between them all. And all of this is a little spur on for me to keep playing well, to make sure that when the next International game comes along that you get selected for that squad as well. Looking around the England team was a very good one and I was happy enough just to be in it. When youre surrounded with people like Warren, Justin Jackson, Geoff Pitcher, Gary Patterson and Paul Underwood its a real pleasure to play. The Welsh team was quite good as well and it was enjoyable to just get stuck in and listen to another managers tactics and view on the game. Our manager has been doing a very good job this year, but it was just nice to hear it from another angle. Our manager even came to watch the game and so he got hold of me after the game and mentioned a couple of things in the game. Since Ive come back the gaffer and all the lads have been making jokes about International players, but its all been in the right way.

MB: Did you have many nerves about the game, given that it was your first one?

TS: I was nervous before the game, but I went into it thinking that I shouldnt be so nervous that I dont do myself justice. I know that Ive been called into the squad on merit and I think Ive had a good season. So I tried to go out there without any pressure or nerves and with the attitude that if I never get asked back, then at least Ive had that one game. If you make a mistake, you make a mistake, and the important thing to do is to not worry about it. But thats the way I have always played - youve got to be confident in your approach.

MB: I suppose that if we were mid-table, England Internationals might be the only thing on your plate, but even if you didnt cut it on Tuesday night, youd still have a lot to look forward to for the rest of the season. Tuesday night wouldnt have been your do-or-die moment for the season.

TS: Yes, thats right. It was a lot different for me and it was something that I thrived on. It was ggood to go into a different environment. It ought to be a spur for other players in our team. I think that Nick Crittenden must have been very close to getting into the squad and it shows other players that it does happen at our club. Sometimes youre there thinking its always been the other teams and the other clubs.

MB: I think that having Warren as a mainstay in the team over the last three years has meant that the England management are much more likely to come down and watch our team now - weve had people like Rob Cousins and Murray Fishlock get a look-in.

TS: Thats it. Its good that people are coming down. Barrington got called into the trials and he was unfortunate in that the game got called off because he would have been able to show what he can do. I think they came to watch us at Rushden and at Bolton and luckily enough I played OK in those two games, and I guess he must have seen a way in which I could add to the team. Ben Smith got asked to go up to the trial game as well, and I think if theyd been able to see what hes been doing this year he would have been in with a shout. Weve got so many players who could be in contention, given the way weve been playing.

MB: Another one who must have been close to getting the nod must have been Darren Way.

TS: Yes, definitely. The only thing thats running against Darren and Ben is that there is an abundance of great midfielders in the Conference. When you see the standard of players in midfield in the Conference, its unreal. And the playing standard as a whole in the Conference is getting stronger and stronger. Thats why in the last couple of months of the season that are coming up, we are really going to have to keep geeing ourselves up for these remaining games, because we could definitely still come unstuck here. In my eyes it is very very tight. When you walk around town, there are a lot of people who dont realise how tight it really is. There are people thinking that Yeovil have won the league already and there is such a long way to go.

MB: I saw in the last Conference newsletter that we are marked by Ladbrokes as 1/7 on favourites to win the Conference, and I just looked at that and laughed. 1/7 on? Thats crazy!

TS: Its stupid isnt it? Ive spoken to people like Jason Eaton who won the Conference with Cheltenham and he said that it is so difficult to get out. He said that once you are top, people are constantly trying to knock you down. And weve been top for so long, all it needs is for us to have a little slip-up. Theres pressure coming up with our game on Saturday. Because weve been beaten, people are saying is this the start of a bad run? The questions start being asked, and mentally weve got to be stronger to make sure we dont fall into that trap.

MB: One thing I said to James Bent was that weve got to factor in the point that of the sides who have beaten us, Southport and Chester are both teams on the edge of challenging for the league. Southport are definitely on the edge of challenging. Chester you wouldnt mind having a few quid on them for next season.

TS: Yes, Chester are a very good strong team, and a lot of their players have never even experienced part-time football. Theyre a full time team. Not that being full time makes every difference, because Southport came to our place and played some really good stuff. This is the time when the mental strength counts the most. The bodies are tired and were going into Boston on Saturday knowing that it will be a difficult game and knowing that theyve already beaten us 4-1 this season. I thought the 4-1 was a little unjust because they were mostly scored near the end, but they did score with ease. Coming into this game, we dont want them doing the double over us. Especially at home, we want to concentrate on our form and make sure we keep nicking results away from home. Weve got to dig in and show that mental strength. I think weve shown great resilience this season, when weve gone against behind teams. But Chester have got a mean defence, and to let two goals in made it very difficult to claw back.

MB: That was pretty much what I was saying - if we are going to lose to sides, its probably more reassuring that its not sides in the bottom three were losing against. The two games that weve lost have actually been against two quality sides.

TS: Thats right. But one thing you dont want to have it come down to, is marginal decisions when you look back at the end of the season and you maybe think you could have done a bit better against those teams and snatched a point.

MB: You mentioned pressure earlier - thats something that not only ourselves but Rushden have to deal with - and to a lesser extent Southport.

TS: With Rushden, I played up at their ground for the England game on Tuesday, and youve got to realise that every time you go up there you raise your game. I always seem to do well every time I go there. To play in that stadium away from home is a real lift. It had been raining all day on that pitch the day before and yet the pitch was still firm. It was great conditions to play football in and always has been. Teams go there and they want to play football and get the ball on the deck and make themselves look good because theyre not playing on a bog like the situation weve got when we play at home. Chesters pitch was quite good and I thought we got the ball down well in the first 15 or 20 minutes, but weve gone to places like Emley recently and theyve been absolute bogs. When teams go to Rushden, and are able to play football, they put Rushden under a lot more pressure than we are. A lot of the managers are still expecting Rushden to win it and are waiting for Yeovil to blow up, so weve just got to prove them wrong.

MB: You remarked upon that in the Western Daily Press about that when youd read in the Non-League Paper about all these managers and experts saying that Yeovil wont win it - theyll blow up. That point was made about Cheltenham and Kidderminster, in that because theyve got small squads and less resources, that they were incapable of doing it. A lot of it comes down to team spirit doesnt it?

TS: Yes, but also the manager has been going out and looking for the new players we need. We had a couple of new lads train with us today - Michael McIndoe and Marcus Jones. We know about McIndoe because he played against us at Hereford and he was a very good player for them. I cant remember seeing Marcus Jones play against us, but he seems to be a very good player. He looks very comfortable on the ball, and he can play at the back as well. So they are good acquisitions for the squad - theyre going to be good for the team, and they are going to add competition for places. The latter will raise the standard within training because people will want to do better to make sure they get in the team. Already you can see there is no room for people like Paul Steele, who started the season and played about a quarter of the season, didnt he?

MB: Thats right. He played up until the Boston game and then Dave Webb decided he wanted to rest him because he was carrying a knock.

TS: Yes, it was his groin and when he got fit, he found hed gone to the back of the queue. Roy OBrien took his chances when he could - every time he has come in, hes done really well. Theres definitely competition for places if you are a central-defender.

MB: Its not only the competition for places, its also the point that the three players that Colin has brought in can all play in a variety of positions.

TS: Thats right. McIndoe looks very fast, and thats got to be an advantage to us, given the way we play and like to get people forward. If you played him on the left wing and Nick Crittenden on the right, it is really going to add to the amount of pace weve got when were coming forward. It gives us another option, because we know we can play Nick on the left and Lindy on the right. And of course Glenn Poole can play on the left as well - were getting more and more options now. Of course, weve got a couple of suspensions coming up this weekend, so its good news that weve got those three coming in on top of the original squad. At the beginning of the season, if anything had happened to any of our squad, that was it - we would have been in problems.

MB: Theyre all players that have been thorns in our side when weve come up against them, which I think is always a good sign when you are signing a player. Youve got to look at how he played against you - if he matched you or was better than you, then you know youve got a good player.

TS: Thats what David Piper said - he remembered that Michael McIndoe gave him a good game, and theres not that many players who can get past David Piper, is there?

MB: Yes, I was down in that corner at Edgar Street taking photos and I can remember him and Dave getting into all kinds of fun. Ive got a good half a dozen photos of them scrapping away with each other.

TS: He looks really sharp in training, and I think hes going to be a right handful for other teams. The big fellow, Marcus, he was everywhere in training today. Its going to make us stronger in the run-in. If anyones form dips or if they get injured or suspended then its going to benefit us. Then you hope that the strength of our squad will be enough to ensure that teams like Rushden fall off behind us. The way I see it is that were like the lone biker in the Tour De France that goes out way in front. I think thats what Yeovil have done up until this point. But Rushden have just started to reel us in a bit, point by point. But I still feel weve got enough in us to give a bit of a kick and hopefully break their spirit. Its real cat and mouse, but its such a good thing to play in. But this is no pressure compared to when I was battling with Welling at the bottom of the league! Its such a big turnaround for me to go from a relegation-threatened team to a potentially championship winning team. But being in this position is no pressure to being stuck near the bottom of the league. When youre at the bottom, youre there almost frightened about what youre going to be doing next year. This is the sort of pressure that you want to experience!

MB: This is more pressure for good reasons isnt it?

TS: Steve Thompson said that weve got so many young players in our team and that we should be all savouring every moment of this. Even though we are all young, some of us may never be involved in anything like this again. You could easily fade into mediocrity in the following season - look what happened to Kettering for example. Weve just got to concentrate in these last two months and see how far we can go. Even though they are young lads, there are not too many people going out in the evenings at the moment. Everybody is looking after themselves, because you cant afford to let your standards drop. Young lads are often tempted to go out and get drunk but theyre not doing that at the moment. Theyre wanting to be at their best in training.

MB: Particularly with the new boys breathing down your necks. They could land in a situation where they play, we win against Boston, and suddenly some of the regulars cant get their place back because they didnt perform in training.

TS: We havent got too many drinkers in the team - some of them are only just old enough to drink! Weve got such a hungry team, full of people like myself, Darren, Nick and Ben who want to prove to the people who have kicked us down before when we were Football League players, that they were wrong. The difference is that weve found a club that looks after its players behind the scenes. The way we get looked after here is second-to-none. I remember Simon Betts coming here and he was wondering what kind of a club hed joined. He loves it here. Compared to Scarborough, he reckoned that Yeovil really exceeded in the way they look after people behind the scenes. This club is run in the right way, and I think it deserves success for the way the players are treated, the supporters weve got and the stadium weve got here.

MB: What are the little touches youre talking about here? What makes that difference?

TS: After every day in training everybody goes and meets up. We all get provided with lunch and we go and sit up at the club and talk about the training and how the day has gone. The manager takes us into a room and we watch videos of our games and talk about it all. Things like that can only be better for the players and the club. If you make a mistake the players laugh at you, but youve got the chance there to analyse it, and Steve Thompson and the gaffer will stop the tape and ask you what you think you could have done there. I didnt get that kind of treatment when I was younger - I just got told to buckle up and wait for the next game. Its not just the younger players though - today he pulled Warren and Ben and asked them what they could have done better. It sinks in better.

MB: Yes, thats the style. Rather than tell someone theyve done something wrong, you get them to tell you what theyve done wrong.

TS: Thats right and when you can see it on video its a lot easier. We went over a lot of the Chester game today and the manager kept stopping the tape and in particular having a discussion on what went wrong on the two goals and also showing us how to be resilient and get on top of teams. When you analyse it like that, it sinks in and you go into the next game saying to yourself that youre going to do something differently today. Its in your head already. On top of that youve got the club providing us with food, and I think that just gets all the lads back together again after training and that gets the team spirit going - everyones having a sandwich, a cup of tea and having a chat. Its better for the team because youre spending that little bit more time together - youre not just going in to train and then going home.

Theres a real bonding there. Everyones mucking in and thats better for the team. The people downstairs are so helpful - you can go straight to Jean Cotton and she will help you with anything. The manager is so approachable if youve got problems. He said that to us on the very first day he got here - if youve got problems, that means you need to do something he does listen. That applies to Steve Thompson as well. Theyre not agony aunts, but if you go to them they will do their best to help. Weve had a lot of players coming down into this area for the first time this year and the club have helped them with giving them telephone numbers for things like buying houses. You get a lot of clubs that will leave you to do all of these sorts of things yourself, and its these little touches that make the club good and its going to make people want to play for the club. People will hear about these things from other players and it gives the club a good name. And it makes a difference because players are happy and they want to play for the club. I know some players where they dont do those things and where they hate the club and they hate the manager. And those clubs are never going to get 110% out of their players if they dont like or respect the club.

MB: I cant let you go without asking you about the goal you got in the England Semi-Pro game that got ruled out. How close was it to being a good goal?

TS: It was against Tony Pennock as well! Id gone up to the far post, and Warren had just climbed a bit over their number five, and it nicked over his head and I headed it, and I think it took another ricochet off one of their defenders and it went in. Then the whistle went, and I could hear Tony Pennock laughing, because he knew it was me who headed it. To say the least I swore at him a few times and he laughed some more, because it would have made my day if I had scored against Tony Pennock! Warren and myself were rooming together the night before and that was the only thing on our minds, because he would never ever have lived it down in training if that goal had stood!

MB: So I hope youve been giving Warren lots of stick for fouling their player?

TP: Yeah, its just one of those things. It was probably a fair decision because I think that if Warren hadnt fouled him, their player would have got a touch on the ball. I think he was just trying to give me an edge! It would have rounded off a great day, but I still had a very good week training with them all. The match has finished now, but its just given me that fresh impetus to get back and grab a place next time round. Ive got a bit of a spring in my step, and its made me want to get back into training with Yeovil, and see if I can keep those standards up for Yeovil.

MB: And maybe one of the next time you get an England cap, it might be a bit closer to home and a few Yeovil fans can cheer you on.

TS: Youd be surprised, but there were a few Yeovil supporters at the game at Rushden as well, and I spotted Ian, Jason and Bryan Moore before or during the game and its just nice to see a few familiar faces when youve got a big game like that. They travel everywhere, and it was nice to see them and others turn up and want to watch Warren and myself play on such an occasion. These sort of people come and watch us play and they come and support us. They dont come to criticise us, or have a pop at us if we do something wrong - they really want us to win and they really want to encourage us.
