Yeovil Town manager Russell Slade talked to BBC Radio Bristol's John Bennett after his side had beaten Hartlepool United on December 8th 2007.

RS: As you know it's been a difficult season, but I'm absolutely thrilled with that result, especially after going a goal down. It was a spectacular opener by Mackay to give them the opener. But I thought we created chances all the way through the game and we were unlucky not to level before we did. I know they had a player off at the time and sometimes that has happened to me in the past when we've been down to 10 players and goals have gone against you. But we took those opportunities and got ourselves on the front foot and got ourselves into a lead at half time and I always felt then that the next goal would be very important. I know Hartlepool and I respect Danny and his team and I knew they'd stay on the front foot and put us under pressure and try and put lots of balls into the box and work the ball so that they can create openings. But I thought we closed down better than we've often done in the past and we always looked lively on the counterattack. I also always thought that we had the quality with Stieber and with James Walker hitting form and Stewie back in the side to hurt teams now. They are a threat and I think in the last four or five home games now we've proved that we can score goals as well. That backs that theory up. We're pleased now as we start to go into the Christmas programme that we can be in a position to threaten those top six places.

JB: And you got those back-to-back wins that you've been craving as well.

RS: Yes, absolutely. We wanted those back-to-backs. It's important as we've only done it once so far this season. To get those makes a massive difference, not only to the league table, but also to our confidence and morale.

JB: You mentioned the response from the team and it was straight away after conceding the early goal.

RS: Yes, I thought we'd opened OK and I thought we'd got lots of good balls in. James Walker nearly scored and there were a couple of headers. There were some great quality balls coming in from Zoltan and we could have scored before we did actually get the goal and I felt we thoroughly deserved to be 2-1 up at half time.

JB: You've now got the youngster Zoltan Stieber, who has got superb delivery. He's turning into a bit of a star for you.

RS: Well, I told you and warned you before he came that he is only a young boy. But he has great technical ability and Aston Villa think an awful lot of him. The quality of the corners that he has put in today has been great. Every single one of them has been threatening. When he is on the ball, you can see his capabilities for going around the man and putting balls in and linking up with the front men. We're obviously very pleased with him. It was a massive gamble bringing in someone who is so young and inexperienced and to give him his debut in his football career in this country. He seems to be enjoying it. He's been given that opportunity and that's what you want to see. You want to see the young players in your squad taking the opportunity and pushing on with their own careers.

JB: You were forced to make changes to the team as well and they worked really well. Gary Dempsey came into the centre of midfield and Terrell Forbes went to left-back.

RS: Well obviously I'd lost Nathan Jones so we had to do something. It wouldn't be right if Yeovil didn't have to make a change to the team in a game this season! But we made that and brought Gary Dempsey in and I thought he did a fine job today. I thought we closed down today better than we have in some of our recent performances and the midfield take a lot of credit for that. Darren Way of course has been terrific for us. He's started to feel his thigh so he came off and we put Anthony Barry on. Zoltan Stieber was out on his legs and I think the Hungarian needed a bowl of goulash and so we brought him off as well!

JB: As you say, injuries have been causing you problems this season. Are you starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now? Are you getting close to picking your perfect eleven?

RS: You can always tell when you look in your treatment room and you've got one or two faces beginning to smile. Marvin Williams has got a great big smile now because he knows he is ever so close and the same applies to Marc Bircham. So there's only Lee Morris, but I don't think Lee is going to continue with his career and we are in negotiation with him at this moment in time to perhaps end his contract and wish him all the best. He's been a terrific player as I've said on many occasions and could have graced the Championship if his career had been prolonged. But these things happen in football and they are not nice. But he will move on and we will wish him all the best.

I've had to cajole, I've had to bully, I've had to improvise and to change my system and I've had to change my personnel rapidly. I don't want to tempt fate, but you get the feeling that things are beginning to settle down. I am beginning to have the right type of options on the bench and during the week in training. The more those players can play together and link up and have an understanding on the pitch, the better. Then what happens is that if you lift the standard then hopefully one or two of the others get on board as well and start driving on and that is what it is all about. As a manager I want to try and drive that standard out of them and a lot of the time it is down to hard work.

Qu: You mentioned the youngest player, but the oldest player Stewart did well too.

RS: Yes he had a great game. He's intelligent, he's got invention. He always seems to have time on the ball, even in the conditions today he makes a little bit of time for himself. To be honest it is very difficult to coach that. The football brain is very difficult to coach. You can help, you can show, but to do that in the heat of the moment is something that you grow into and you get better at. That is something to credit to Stewie as he has had it all of his life. He brings people in and some of the interplay, where he brought Warney in for example during the first period, and the weight of the pass on the one-two was exquisite really. He is a joy to work with. I only wish I could have had him five years ago.

Qu: Nice to see Lloyd get another goal at the end.

RS: Yes, Lloyd has worked really really hard. We've had a chat about not being in the side and I've said that I wanted to link up a little bit more with the two wide men and he has taken that on the chin. And for him to come on and get a goal, I'm absolutely delighted for the big man. It was a massive goal for us and I didn't think he was going to get it at one stage. He regained his composure and then touched it over the keeper.

I'm much more upbeat about today's performance. Even if we'd only won 2-1 today I'd have still been more upbeat about the performance, because firstly I rate Danny and his side, and secondly I felt we were doing the nitty-gritty side of the game and making it difficult for Hartlepool to get a foothold in the game. That is what pleased me.
