Yeovil Town manager Russell Slade talked to BBC Radio Bristol's Alistair Durden on Friday 23rd June 2006, at the end of a week that had seen the new manager make his first four signings for the club. Alistair asked the following questions:

AD: Tell us first about your new signing Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala

RS: He joined us from Nice at Grimsby Town last season. I'm delighted that we've been able to link up again and that I've been able to take him to Yeovil. He played a big part in the first half of last season before he went off to the African Nations. He's a midfielder, he's a No.6, he likes to get on the ball, but at the same time he is quite tough-tackling as well

AD: You used him during the early part of the season but he didn't crop up quite so much during the second part of the season.

RS: No, what happened was that he went away for a month for the African Nations Cup, which cost him four weeks, but then he had a bit of an injury after that. So he struggled then to get back into the side, especially after the signing of Curtis Woodhouse, who I took from Hull City. But he's got ability - there's no doubt about that, otherwise I wouldn't have signed him.

AD: Where do you see him playing? Central midfield?

RS: Yes, central midfield, although he's happy with anywhere across that midfield really. He's a good influence, he's a little bit different and I'm sure the fans will warm to him.

AD: He made the headlines last season with that goal against Spurs in the Carling Cup.

RS: Yes, I think he scored about six for me in the end, albeit with three or four of those coming from the penalty spot. He has that sort of French arrogance from the penalty spot, so he doesn't miss them, that's for sure.

AD: But he doesn't do the somersaults like Lua Lua at Portsmouth?

RS: No, he doesn't. He's a bit more subdued than that fortunately!

AD: Now tell us about Terrell Forbes, who I remember from his days at QPR, but is another player you've worked with before.

RS: Yes I have. He had a spell with us after he was at QPR and before he moved on to Oldham in League One. I know all about Terrell. I wanted a little bit of pace to help at the back and Terrell has that in abundance. He reads the game exceptionally well. He's not the tallest centre-half you'll ever see. He's probably about 5'11" but he has a decent leap. He defends well and he is an out-and-out defender and I'm sure again that he'll be a big hit.

AD: Kevin Amankwaah aside, you felt that pace was something that was lacking a little bit?

RS: Possibly. We have good competitors there in Scott Guyett and the skipper Terry Skiverton, so to bring in someone who was a little bit different to go across the back as you've just said is good. He's versatile as well in that he can go right-back if necessary, or play in a three at the back. He's a good asset and I'm sure he will do very well with us.

AD: I notice you've got Lee Morris with you as well - a player that you know right back from your Sheffield United days. Is there a chance he could have a future with you, or are you just letting him train with you at the moment?

RS: I'd love the fact that Lee could get over these injuries. He's been a very very unfortunate, very unlucky boy. He's still only 25 years old. He's had foot injuries where he has broken bones and a severe knee injury and that has cost him. He's had a career in the Championship and even the Premiership when he signed for Derby County in a package worth #4 million from Sheffield United. He has great talent and if he can get a good pre-season under his belt and recover from these knocks that he has had, then he could be a real asset and a real find.

AD: Have you got first option on him or anything like that?

RS: I know Lee and he is comfortable with me and if he does well I'm sure he will be wanting to put pen to paper.

AD: And Chris Cohen - I know you're working hard on that. What is the latest?

RS: The latest is that West Ham have actually accepted our offer. We have agreed personal terms. Chris is away with his girlfriend now and will be coming back, soon after the weekend. We are hoping to bring him down and tie him up during the early part of next week - probably Tuesday. Fingers crossed with that one - hopefully there are no problems in between. You know what football is like sometimes. Until it is done, it is never done. But we are obviously extremely hopeful now that it is going to be completed.

AD: Yes, it's obviously hard to keep something like that quiet, with the fact that he was here last season.

RS: Absolutely, so I would rather be open and honest and tell you that we have worked exceptionally hard. We are there - we've agreed. Chris is happy with everything, his representatives are happy and West Ham are happy, so it's great news all round.

AD: You've been very busy this week - Accrington Stanley are reporting that you have turned down a bid for Gary Roberts today. Can you shed any light on that at all?

RS: Yes, that's absolutely spot on. He is a left winger with a lot of talent and has scored a lot of goals in the Conference last season. I've been tracking his progress, that's for sure. We put in a bid for him and that has been turned down. We've got to look at that situation again and we'll see what happens.

AD: So you'll hopefully go back on that if you can find a bit more money?

RS: Yes, I think that's about it. Everything comes down to brass tacks! It might mean that we've got to tweak the conditions a little bit, but I've got the backing of the Chairman and the Board and hopefully we can do it. If it becomes ridiculous then we will move on and find another target.

AD: Sure, but he was one of their star performers last year wasn't he?

RS: Yes, probably THE star performer for them - from left wing scored something like 16 or 18 goals - I'm not quite sure how many. But he played a big part in their promotion.

AD: Just a final thought on the fixtures - you've got Millwall to start away. That's a pretty tough start isn't it?

RS: Yes, it's a bit daunting isn't it. But I enjoy those type of games. They are a former Championship side, with great pedigree and great history. It's nice to be going there on the first day of the season. It's my old mate Nigel Spackman (Millwall manager) and Willie Donachie (Millwall assistant manager) who I know well from my Sheffield United days. I'll look forward to it, to be honest, and I hope my players will as well.

AD: Too right, and as a final thought, how are you enjoying the job so far? It's been about as busy a week as you could have expected hasn't it?

RS: Yes, that's how I like it really. As I said when I came in (on the day of the press conference) the club is going through a bit of a transitional period and it is my job to see it through and build a squad that is capable. I've started doing that now and I won't stop until I'm satisfied.
