Yeovil Town Ladies Chairman Stephen Allinson spoke to BBC Somerset presenter Matt Faulkner on Wednesday 4th March 2015 about the Ladies plans to set up an elite player performance pathway that sees them going into partnership with Bridgwater College.

MF: So how does this partnership work then?

SA: It's really exciting actually. Bridgwater College have got a very good reputation, not only in terms of education but also with sporting excellence. They're one of the official partners with the Somerset FA. They've approached us and we've approached them, and effectively we're now going to be able to give them and anyone who is over sixteen, a total of thirteen hours dedicated sports training in addition to the academic qualifications that they're doing. So effectively we're matching education and sport, so that's brilliant for anyone over sixteen. But just as significant is that we are going to have a development centre with them for Under-10s right the way up to Under-16s, and soon we will have a mini-centre for Under-4s through to Under-9s. So you can see the whole pathway for girls and football.

MF: So the future of the women's game is looking good in Somerset then?

SA: Well I really hope so. I think it's actually that the women's game nationally, where there is a lot of support for women's football, and indeed women's sport at the moment. Certainly the FA are very committed to it, and we're mirroring that. So there is no doubt in my mind that it is something to watch for the future. I give no apologies for the fact that we want to make sure that Yeovil Town Ladies is right the top of that football tree.

MF: Are there any guarantees that the players in the college team will make the step up into Yeovil Town Ladies, or is it that you can have a scout?

SA: No, there obviously can't be any guarantees, but what we can say is that by having extra training here and extra sessions, then if you have got the ability we hope that you are going to be spotted, and either run through to the Centre of Excellence in the South West or through the programmes that we've got here. That's the way that we hope it will work.

MF: Will players from other colleges still be considered for Yeovil Town Ladies or is this an exclusive deal?

SA: Oh no - most certainly not. We're very pleased to work with all kinds of people - it's just that we've got this partnership. If we've got a talented youngster that comes from other areas - a couple of our players now are from Cornwall and are coming up to us - obviously they will still be very welcomed. But I think it's nice to have a link in Somerset. One of the problems certainly with men's football is that the lower league teams have lost their local lads because of the power of the Premier League and the bigger clubs. We wouldn't like to see that happen in the ladies game.
