31 July 2019 : Time To Face The Music (And Dance!)
Here we are ladies and gentlemen, the new season is upon us!

The opening fixture up and down the country is oft received with optimism as a football fan. The tragedies of last season are wiped away and a fresh start is upon us – each team and every fan can rightfully think “maybe this year we’ll do it.” (Whatever ‘it’ may be for that particular club)

It's true that we’ve had some rough opening days in our recent history – I needn’t remind people of Kenilworth Road. Less shockingly Sir Gary endured a heavy loss in his first competitive game for us – a 3-2 loss at home to Northwich Victoria – who start this season 3 leagues below us.

The following year was of course the Golden Season. We started with a ‘home’ 2-2 draw at The Avenue against Gravesend & Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet), a match remembered more for one injury rather than the score line. Oddly enough on the following Tuesday night we faced our opening opponents in this new chapter in our history – Barnet. That night we lost 2-1 at Underhill. 1 point from 2 games against sides who would go on to finish 17th and 11th respectively. (Admittedly we didn’t lose another league match until December!)

That wasn’t a new side either, that side was largely the same as the one who had at the end of the previous season won the club’s first major silverware, the FA Trophy. At the beginning of this chapter we are totally new following a cull of everyone the board could get rid of for free in the summer – with only 6 senior players remaining from last year.

So here we are, everything fresh, everything new (save for a couple old guys upstairs who it's taking a while to get rid of!). Fresh optimism and a fresh start, and maybe fresh carpet.

Nowhere has the new start been more noticeable than on social media. The club has really bought into the idea of bridging the gap with the fans by giving Alex O’Loughlin more freedom to deliver content (at least that’s how it appears to me). The multiple interviews and updates with the Gaffer interspersed with new signing interviews and the occasional chat with returnees has been well received across the online fan base as far as I can tell, and certainly within Old Green Towers.

On that note let's turn to the Gaffer – Darren Sarll. Sarll is the frontman for the new owners, he comes as a package with them and he has certainly hit the ground running since his appointment. His YTTV pieces have been frank and forthright. He comes across as a boss who negotiates with players in very much the same way his teams are built – no nonsense.

Flip that particular coin over and you see the light-hearted, down to earth bloke on local BBC when being interviewed and driven to work. Something tells me that a fair few former managers wouldn’t have been quite so comfortable ‘singing’ and bouncing along to ‘Sex on Fire’ by Kings of Leon during his first interview with the BBC!

That being said there is no point in comparing Sarll, or his players, to other managers/sides at this point – we haven’t kicked a ball competitively yet and in any event Sarll faces a re-building job within the context of one of the biggest upheavals in our recent history. Overall I’m reinvigorated by the man. This new YTFC may not be the YTFC of recent years, but maybe that’s exactly what we need – to wake up and try something new. I hope the new owners progress with the takeover and it gets completed. We have turned a corner a bit over the last few months and it would be disastrous for all that to fall apart and to then potentially risk the existence of the club.

I wont try and pull the wool over your eyes reader, I was a Couhig fan, I was an Andrew Rossiter fan, and now I’m a Priestnall and Pope fan. That may sound fickle – it probably is, but I remain a fan of both Couhig and Rossiter. What I think I am actually is a fan of change and moving away from those that have failed to realise when they need to step aside. Norman Hayward and John Fry (in particular) have served our club well but have outlasted their usefulness, now having brought us to our knees and destroyed their legacy forever. I don’t mind if things take a bit longer to complete, but lets be clear the wounds of last season and the previous years are still fresh and the goodwill of the fans who hope for a change in direction will only last so long.

Well, that took a bit of a sour turn didn’t it? Let’s get back on topic to the new season and the boys who will be facing the music on Saturday.

“There may be trouble ahead…”

Turning first to the new signings I was impressed with the early trio of Rhys Murphy, Luke Wilkinson and Lee Collins. Admittedly Murphy has only impressed me once he got on the pitch whereas Luke and Lee have CVs and gave interviews that inspired me with confidence. A major concern however is the lack of pre-season that Wilkinson has had.

Those three added to the returnees of Carl Dickinson and Craig Alcock (who are both essentially new signings given the debacle of last year) and Stuart Nelson create a spine of a solid, uncompromising side.

The rest of the side appears to be built of younger, hungry players who are eager to prove they can make it as professional footballers. Lets hope that Tom Bradbury, Albi Skendi and Tom “Glen” Whelan can cut the mustard – they have obviously impressed Sarll enough, which bodes well.

That leaves a trio of contracted players from the former regime: Matty Worthington, Ryan Seager and Courtney Duffus. I think it's fair to say that this season is make or break for each of them.

Worthington appears to have got in Sarll’s good books and I really hope he can identify the role he wants to play in the XI and deliver solid performances this year. I see him as a Joe Edwards/Darren Way type player who can break up play and give the ball to a more creative partner.

Duffus would be in a stronger position now if he hadn’t got messed up with that business in Taunton at the end of last year. That being said, new manager, fresh start and wipe the slate clean. He had a decent end of last year and I’d expect him to do far better at this level. If he gets the game time I expect him to show what he can do. Tall, strong and mobile, but maybe a bit raw/inconsistent. In any event the ball is in his court – make the most of the opportunities that come his way this year. He is different to our other strikers in that he can be the target man and so should be closer to the starting XI than other strikers both fighting to be the No.9. Injuries in the pre-season have not helped and I do worry for his future at the club.

Seager is the major concern for me. I love the guy. He’s billed as a quality finisher and is a local boy, a true “one of our own” and would have gone down in YTFC folklore had that ‘goal’ been scored on a different day and actually kept us up. Like Duffus I expect him to tear this league up and similarly he needs to get going early to have a decent season and put his career back on track. I have faith in him. All the noise in pre-season has been about Murphy. That’s probably because its easy to sell a 28-goal striker to get the fans back through the turnstiles (irrespective that those goals were scored at a
level beneath our current one). Its also part of the narrative that Murphy has a history with Sarll and is ‘his guy’. I like to think an additional side benefit of this (and maybe part of Sarll’s thinking) is to keep the attention on Murphy to allow Seager to go under the radar a bit without any pressure. I hope that’s the case rather than Sarll not rating Ryan.

To that end I was concerned when I heard Sarll mention that there would be “others definitely leaving the club” before the next round of recruitment could take place. Not only does that imply that we have spent the playing budget already but also that we are looking at departures before anybody else comes in. I hope he was mainly referring to Andrew Crofts as virtually everybody else who is on the books has been a Sarll signing or has been welcomed back into the club following the issues of the end of last year. Therefore the only players I can identify as being at risk of being shipped out are Duffus and Seager – I personally hope they aren’t, and not just because of how light we are across the squad.

Another thing that I like the sound of is this idea of building a dressing room, of refusing to rush recruitment in case it disrupts this determined, fight-to-the-death side that Sarll is building. Making the right move at the right time. It does however make me wonder what side Sarll could have put together if he had taken over early in the summer.

I’m glad to hear that players are being offered 2-year deals. This builds stability in the club. We have however seen the occasional long term signing that hasn’t worked out. My preferred route would be for the club to adopt the approach taken with “Colin” Myles Hippolyte, offering a 1-year deal with the option for the club to extend by an extra year. That way the club has the stability of knowing they can retain that player for another year, but also the flexibility to get rid if things don’t work out. Additionally, if a player knows he has to put in a shift all year to earn that extra year on his deal he’s less likely to take things easy for the first year of his deal – keeping him on his toes.

Overall I have faith in Sarll’s new signings, and him in particular. That being said I am concerned that even with the latest recruits – Hippolyte and Liam Driscoll – we are generally light on numbers. That in itself isn’t news to us – we’ve had many years when we have started with small squads, and at least this year we aren’t restricted by the transfer window. Nevertheless I am fearful that a couple injuries or suspensions in the wrong areas and we could be really up against it. Hopefully the new loans that are earmarked to come in will help reduce my blood pressure a bit.

“…but while we’ve got Collins, and Murphy, and Myles Hippolyte…”

At present we have 18 players, including 4 who are on the journey from the academy to the first XI. Of those 14 senior players we have:

2 Goalkeepers
1 Left back (and Daniel Ojo)
1 Right back
3 Centre backs
1 Left winger
0 Right wingers (albeit Gabby Rodgers & Nestor Shako are listed as right wingers on Ciderspace)
3 Central Midfielders (plus Alex John)
3 Strikers (whilst not in the first XI squad we also have Devon Somerset Arnold)

Which shows how light we are in certain positions. We need another centre back, cover at full back, a couple wingers, and another central midfielder – which Sarll has said he is looking to bring in. with such limited numbers you subsequently end up limiting the formations you can play. We may therefore need to be extra-forgiving if the Gaffer can’t change the course of games in this early part of the season.

It may be harsh of me not to include the 4 academy graduates in the above, and I would love to be writing come the end of the season about how they had impressive break-though years. All fans love to see one of our own breaking into the team and doing well. I am no different, I’m just weary of placing such responsibility on their shoulders. That being said the best way to learn the game and to improve is to actually play proper football that matters. Sink or swim lads.

What can we look forward to this year? What is guaranteed is a hardworking, committed side who refuses to give up. How often have we longed for that? To that extent Sarll has built a team in his own image - no nonsense and uncompromising. It will be interesting to see how some of the younger and more creative players do and whether they have the confidence to try that key pass or shot. There is no guarantee that we will get flowing, pass-and-move football but we will be up for the challenge every game – that we can be assured.

“…let’s face the music, and dance fight!”

Nobody can with any real certainty predict who will end up where in the league table this year – although I am reminded that at this time of year (prior to the first game) Badger launches the prediction competition!

On that note, before we get ahead of ourselves by either heralding our team as Champions-elect or getting involved in yet another relegation scrap, lets take a look at the first 10 games and where those teams finished last season.

Barnet – finished in mid-table last season, 14 points of the playoffs and 16 above the team that would have been relegated (Aldershot) were it not for the financial issues at Gateshead.

Eastleigh – beat big-boys Wrexham in the playoffs before losing to eventual Wembley winners, Salford

Stockport County – crowned their season (which included an FA cup win at HP) with promotion to the Vanarama National

Ebbsfleet United – 7 points outside the playoffs and the ‘best of the rest’

Barrow – again another mid-table result, finishing comfortably 20 points clear of relegation but 10 short of the playoffs

Then there’s the pair of Maidenhead United and Dagenham & Redbridge who both fought to end up above that relegation line last season, coming in 12 and 10 points from ‘safety’ in the end. This reminds me our of time in League 1 all those years ago.

Notts County - finally our contemporaries. Relegated from the EFL last year and also going through the upheaval of a takeover. Theirs has gone through unlike ours, but we haven’t been in trouble with HMRC or placed under a transfer embargo. So it’ll be interesting to see how County can turn this year around from a slow start.

Now every team has changed this summer. New signings and departures mean that just because a team ended last year in mid-table for example doesn’t mean they won’t storm the league this season. What I am trying to say (in a long-winded way) is that the first 10 games at least give us a wide variety of teams to face, based on last year. At the end of the season we may look back and realise we ended up having played the top/bottom 10 in these first 10 games – but I’m pretty satisfied we have a good mix of teams to measure ourselves against.

It’ll be at that point – after the 10th league game, that I aim to pen something further, unless something really winds me up!!

Before I sign off, just a quick reminder to you all – its membership renewal time for a lot of people at the Glovers Trust so if you haven’t renewed yet this reminder is for you. Or if you haven’t joined yet, why not join up – we have great scarves! [Ed. That is not the only reason to join – see here for more actual reasons]

Much love, as always
Old Green Eyes.

Epilogue / Post-Script:

On a final note, I usually sign off with ‘ABU’ however those of you that follow me on Twitter may know that I have abandoned this (at least temporarily) as I feel it has become a bit of a weapon amongst fans who try and ‘out fan’ each other. Its been used in some corners as a way of shutting down an argument where whoever pulls the ABU card first seizes the moral high-ground and any dissenting remarks are labelled as anti-club. Every time I read such arguments I am reminded of John Cleese in Life of Brian, pointing and yelling “a unbeliever!”

(Admittedly since things have calmed down off the pitch the sniping at each other has quietened down a bit)

I therefore have personally adopted two potential new phrases inspired by Sarll’s revolution. Now I don’t champion these as new club mottos or anything, I am simply saying for the time being at least I won’t be using ABU.

BTC – Break The Cycle; and
ITP – Inspire Through Positivity

Both are, of course, vomit inducing. But I think are apt for where we are currently as a club. We are in need of a fresh start to Break The Cycle we got into of losing games and pushing fans away, slowly destroying our club. How do we do that? Well the club handles all the on-pitch/off-pitch matters but we can handle the on-terrace/off-terrace matters! [Ed. Vomit emoji]

We are all, of course, free to air our opinions and to support our club how we see fit. Generally my rule is I will endeavour to support the team during the 90 mins and save any constructive criticism for after the game. I’m not perfect. I occasionally let negativity in (and then out, loudly!). But I think that we need to adopt a fresh approach with this new league we find ourselves in, with new players and new management. We have a couple of youngsters in the team and unless we recruit heavily we will be more reliant on the academy this season than we have at any other time in our history. Therefore we need to be more forgiving of players who try something, but that ultimately doesn’t come off. I’m reminded of those fans who had a pop at Lee Johnson (whatever happened to him?) for trying through balls that were cut-out. Some may call it happy-clapping, but during the 90 minutes I’d prefer to call it Inspiring Through Positivity.

I bet you can’t tell I have embarked on a new journey as a professional Life Coach/Motivational Speaker, can you?!

(I did want to make reference to the players that have left us this summer but to be honest I couldn’t find a natural place to fit such a section. I get the feeling it would have stirred up some negativity amongst readers anyway and we don’t need that. Maybe another time)

A good well rounded review. I was at a recent friendly of Altrincham (Vanarama North) v Stockport Town. Both sides looked really tidy and we will recall how Stockport turned us over with fast interchanging moves & passes in the Cup. Stockport have taken the decision to remain part-time for now so it will be really interesting to see how we fare against them.

I think there are at least three certain notable companies who in recent days all have first Gazette notices of compulsory strike-off.

May be significant, may be not.

But perhaps fuels a hunch Mr Rossiter MIGHT be back at the negotiation table soon.

A good summing up but at the moment I can not have a great deal of confidence for the new season if we escape relegation I will count it as a plus, this is a very tough league, I watch Nationwide North on a regular basis and even that is a hard league. We give the impression that we have no money, we have let good players walk away, IE, Fisher, Warren, Sowumi, Mugabi, to name four we appear to have no coaching staff and some of the players we have signed come from The Southern Premier league and as stated in the article we have 14 senior players and 4 ex academy players, surely not enough to compete at this level, 3 of the above mentioned players are signed by football league clubs and I forgot a fifth player has joined Hibernian ,James.
I am delighted to see Alcock and Dickinson restored to the team but I have to ask if these two were playing in the last quarter of last season instead of sitting on the side lines would we still be a football league club, I think the answer is a big yes we would .
It has been said that we need cover at full back and centre back , what about signing Mugabi again he can cover both positions and should never have been released, I thought he was the stand out outfield player last season, and as for a midfielder what about Ben Whitfield or there is a very skilful midfielder at Leamington EX Walsall Reece Flannagan who wants to get back in to League football.
I believe our new manager Darren Sarll has done a good job so far with very limited resources and very little time but I am still fearful for the new season.
Finally what about the take over is it ever going to happen, I am getting very concerned that it might not happen .
