25 March 2019 : He Did It His Way
"And now, the end is here
And so he faced the final curtain.
My friends I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain..."

On numerous occasions this season I have felt the need to grab my quill and send over my latest ramblings to Badger and HHH at Ciderspace HQ. They have however managed to perfectly cover the news/results as they break and so my words have not left Old Green Towers. (I have however started Twittering – it can be quite therapeutic to shout into the void! @_Old_Green_Eyes).

Today (Sunday) is different however, as they are in London and have left me with the keys! I jest of course, but the news of Darren Way being removed as First Team Manager is something I cannot pass up – simply because months ago it became apparent I would be blessed with the opportunity to use probably the most famous Sinatra song ever.

It would be very easy to simply line up point after point lambasting Way for getting is into our current predicament. There are plenty of people who will see Darren as a black or white figure – you either love him (eyes squarely looking at the Jones Mafia) or you hate him as a lot of younger fans have learnt to.
I choose those last words carefully. Many, not all, of the vocal fans that have called for Darren to go for a long time now have only seen him as a manager/coach. It's easy to pick up on the negativity of a few older fans and latch on to that in an attempt to accelerate the perceived acceptance into the fan base.

That's what I want to address here. If you consider the history of our club and the individuals who have helped shape the same I would suggest that two managers stand head and shoulders above all others: Alec Stock, who lead us to the most famous FA cup giant-killing of all time in 1949; and of course Sir Gary Johnson, who not only delivered League Football for the first time but then returned to save us from relegation and then propel us into the unthinkable, The Championship, in 18 months.

I personally have SGJ ahead of Stock but if you then look to the next most important/influential players/managers then I think you would be hard pressed to look beyond Terry Skiverton and Darren Way (in that order). Skivo quite rightly received a decent recognition of his playing career with us when he left earlier in the season, only to return later at the Academy. Skivo also to his credit kept us up in League One year after year until Sir Gary needed to come back to bail him, and us, out. He also knew his limits and wasn’t afraid to call out poor performances.

I hope that in time both Skiverton and Way will be seen for what they are at the club – legends for their playing exploits, if not for their managerial stints.

"We've lived, a life that's full
We've travelled each and every highway
But more, much more than this,
He was our Way
."

Lets not forget that Darren saved us from relegation when he took over from Paul Sturrock. His appointment was perfect in that he unified the team and fans with one common purpose – survival against all odds (SWMBO: this isn't a Efe Sodje piece!). At that time not since Sir Gary and those two promotions had it felt that we had Achieved Through Unity. The following season was an improvement – until it fell apart, and then the realities of Darren's limitations started to show to all of us – except to some (both inside and outside the club).

We then stagnated. Poor football and a gradual worsening relationship between fans and the club saw paying customers fall away from the routine of going to HP every other weekend. As a fan once you start asking if you are getting value for your money you realise maybe you’ve fallen out of love with the experience, if not the club.

I often said Darren needed help and support to get past his limitations. It was clear he had no idea how to affect games with substitutions or how to develop systems and tactics, as an alternative to what he had set up in the summer. When a change in line-up or system resulted in a win it always seemed that it was more by luck than judgment. Alas no real help was asked for or provided and inevitably we slid down the table and find ourselves two points above the relegation line – but with Macclesfield with a key game in hand.

"Yes there were times, I'm sure you knew
When he bit off more than he could chew.
But through it all, whilst there was doubt
He took his dummy and spat it out
He faced it all, stood 5ft tall
But wouldn’t walk away
."

Darren's tenure will not be remembered for the first season escape, or the occasional big results on the road (Newport, Coventry and Notts County), but instead for the toxic ending that has nearly cost our club it's league status, and may still do. The turning point for me and many other fans will have been the Supporters Alliance meeting that will go down in history as the moment the YTFC manager said fans knew nothing and labelled himself a hero (I can't wait to see the next job he can now walk into). I hope however that those of us who saw Darren as the tenacious, never-say-die battling midfielder who would out-jump the opposition despite his diminutive size, will remember him for that and not the villain he has become. Were it not for the towering leadership of Skiverton it is very possible that Darren would have been our Captain Fantastic.

But what now? Neale Marmon has been appointed as a temporary head coach until either the end of the season or until a new permanent manager can be found. That's a sensible appointment – I dare to think what would have happened if Paul Terry had been appointed as Way's replacement!

The relationship between the fans and the club can be repaired – the new ownership and now new management will hopefully see to that. If there is one thing that could be taken as a positive from all this I would suggest the growth in fans groups including the Glovers Trust is a thin silver lining and I'd encourage you all to join a group, especially the Trust.

What is clear now is that we need to recapture the spirit that Darren's appointment years ago brought – Achieve by Unity. I think Way's departure will lift the toxic cloud that had been hanging around Huish Park, now we need fill the stands and bring the noise. Even if the performances aren't perfect we need to support the lads during the 90 mins. Time for the 12th man.

"For what is a club, what has it got
If not it's fans then it has naught.
To say the things we truly feel
Support the boys and the new boss, Neale
The record shows we took the blows
But theres no moooooore Way!
"

Whatever you views on Darren it is a sad end. Promoting from within has only ever been a short term fix, but cheap. Thommo, Skivo, and now Darren have all been found wanting. I think Darren has given everything but in the end it has not been enough.
Regime change gives the long overdue opportunity for a top to bottom overhaul.

I think this article is spot on. All the comments about how the team was set up are correct. The team had gone from play off contention with that record run of games without conceding to relegation candidates and a goal difference of minus 20.
But there is another problem currently spoiling the match day experience. I have asked the Club to stop the very personal body searching they conduct on us season ticket holders which is downright humiliating and insulting. I would love to know what other ticket holders think.
The club has much work to do to win the fans back.

The board have acted at last. DW should have gone last season and certainly never merited an extension. He was given ample opportunity to do better. The fact he was a good player is immaterial. He was not a good manager. Anyway lets go forward. Dont really know NM so an unknown quantity - just believe in the players, free up their heads, pick our experienced defenders and play to win.

One down, two to go (Fry, Hayward), for once in a very long time there is reason to believe. A good marker would be for fans to get as many supporters at the matches as they can to show the hopeful part 2 of the rescue act , new ownership, of what is possible supporter number wise over the few gales left. Easy for me to say 250 miles away, but I will for sure be at Crewe my first attendance in 3/4 years, since my own northern glover mini boycott began....

At the time I started going, Darren, along with Skivo and others were absolutely heroic players. But sadly the sentimental and cheap appointments made by the board have allowed for their reputations to spiral. In Darren’s case, he should have been spared this treatment by the fans by letting him go a year ago. It would have been for his own good as well.

I’m fully behind the lads for the end of the season and hope it’s not too late. Regardless, they must now give this everything so we can say we went down swinging. This news will cause panic in Notts County and Macclesfield now and we have to capitalise on that. A mini season starting Saturday.

Darren was a man who gave his all to our club, both as player and manager. Sadly he wasn't up to the management job. I believe that we should all pay tribute to his devotion to the cause, flawed as it was. I, for one, wish Darren every success and happiness in the future. Talking about the future, I wonder whether Darrell Clark would be in the frame as a replacement. He's been there and done it, and I think he could be the answer to our problems, even if we should be relegated this season. This all assumes, of course, that Sir Gary didn't want to come back - I would have him back in a flash.

I agree with the comments, but the sacking may be
too late to save us from relegation.
Only 7 games left and an unknown man at the helm, they should have done this last year, the 2 year contract extention defied belief.
Darren Way was one of the clubs best ever players, as was Skiverton, but they were not managers.
I really hope we can survive the drop

It's sad to see Darren's tenure end in this way, no pun intended .A change of management is the right decision but Darren should have gone at the end of last year IE after the Stockport game, it didn't make sense to give him an extended contract for two years and sack him 4 months later, he should have at least seen the season out, there is no point changing the manager with 7 games to go what is that going to achieve?
Regarding a replacement, I very much hope Yeovil go outside the club for a replacement Neale Marmom is part of the present coaching team and we are three from bottom of league 2 ,point made.I personally would like to see Sir Garry back as Manager with a return to fast free flowing football.
I hope that the club honour Darren's contract, this is the least he deserves after the hard work he has put in even if the decision to replace him is correct .In conclusion I was at the MK game as I live locally and I and family members were appalled at the personal abuse aimed at Darren Way with the chanting and banners held up, I went to MK TO SUPPORT my home town team I wonder what these so called supporters went for, Darren did not deserve this personal abuse.

Agreed - Skivo and Way are legends of the club and should be remembered as such, and both willingly stepped up to manage when called upon. However, time has proven neither of them to be management material, and the measure of promoting them from within to be the crude cost-cutting measure it looked like back in 2009 when Russell Slade was sacked and Skivo made boss. It was a calculated gamble from the board's perspective and one that seems to have paid off in regard to Skivo's assistant back then - Nathan Jones - but sadly not for our club!

Should have gone in November after Stockport but instead Mr Fry and Hayward gave him another two years. Let's hope they are going to be made to pay DW off out of the money they will receive for the hopeful sale of the club !
Whatever happens now I just hope whoever is in charge conducts a proper search for a new manager and not just give it to someone at the club now.
Also David I asked the stewards about the searches at one game and I was told it was on Police instructions.

Agree with the comments about Messrs Johnson & Stock; slightly surprised at Mike Hughes' omission from the list of honourable mentions. DW & Skivo both tarnished their reputations in trying to join that list; the difference is that Skivo knew when the managerial game was up. I just hope the welcome change hasn't come too late...
