13 February 2019 : The Point Of No Return
Back on November 20th 2018, Yeovil Town's Board of Directors thought it would be a good idea to give first team manager Darren Way a new contract with the club. His deal back then was due to run out at the end of June 2019, and so they gave him a new deal that would keep him on the club's payroll until June 2021. Presumably as a democratic vote, a majority of them, or all of them, supported this decision.

Less than three months on, I wonder how those Board members might reflect upon that decision. As I said back in November, I thought the decision to award a new deal to the manager was horrifically bad timing, given that it came immediately after the Stockport County FA Cup defeat, and whilst the club was stuck in 17th place, on a questionable run of form, and falling well short of the manager's own stated targets for this season - just a week prior to the contract announcement he had stated "our target [is] to push into the play-offs", although even back then it looked like an unlikely claim.

Fast forward to mid-February 2019, and let's not beat about the bush - we are looking at an unholy mess. At the time that Darren's new contract was signed, that 17th place gave us a 7 point gap between ourselves and Notts County, and a 14 point gap to Macclesfield Town, whilst we also had two games in hand. The current table shows that we're now just two points above Macclesfield Town, and just five points above Notts County. The games in hand have been used up, with the Magpies now having a game in hand on us.

How has this massive swing happened over that time? The statistics make that clear. We've lost five games in a row. We've lost 12 of our last 17 league games. We've only won three out of our last 25 fixtures. This isn't a short term blip. This is a long term slide, which is gradually showing signs of acceleration over time. The gap between ourselves and the safety line has gradually been cut back, week-on-week, and now stands firmly at a point where the wrong pair of results on Saturday could put us below the line for the first time. The slide can be emphasised by the form table that covers the last 25 games, of which the bottom seven clubs are shown below:

Home Away
Team P W D L F A W D L F A Pts
18Cambridge United25634161421972628
19Crawley Town25715201512972127
20Port Vale25237112346310827
21Morecambe253371821354111526
22Macclesfield Town254451521318131926
23Notts County253541517247112824
24Yeovil Town25157102322871716

It is only the opening seven fixtures of the 2018-19 season that are currently saving us from disaster. A table covering results since the September 2018 win over Newport County would see us bottom of the division and ten points from safety. If each side repeats the form from their last 14 fixtures over the next 14 games, then we'd be relegated alongside Notts County. The good ship Titanic is heading towards the iceberg. Do the Board of Directors or the first team management know how to change course? Have they even spotted the iceberg yet, or are they only seeing sunny blue skies and calm waters?

I did perhaps sense in Darren Way's post-match interview from the Oldham game, that the penny might be dropping. He admitted that results are "taking a huge dent" to the players' confidence, and even he was having to pull up the BBC's reporter for a sugar-coated question by reminding him that we'd lost Tuesday night's game by a 4-1 scoreline. But even then (and this is my problem with most of Darren's interviews) I saw nothing about how the issues surrounding that defeat or other recent ones would be addressed.

It is worth noting what happened to Darren's predecessor Paul Sturrock whilst he was briefly in the hotseat. Paul was in charge of 25 League matches, made up of five League One fixtures, and twenty League Two fixtures. He got 18 points from those 25 games. That was considered not good enough, and he was shown the door, despite him having a possibly legitimate concern that he'd sent much of that time trying to create a new squad, but had never seen players like Kevin Dawson and Simon Gillett due to injury.

Over the last 25 games, Darren has got 16 points - two less than Sturrock. But given he's three years and two months into the job, he can no longer claim to have inherited someone else's mess. Only Omar Sowunmi and Francois Zoko remain of Sturrock's squad and they have been given new contracts by the current manager. This is his own making, and within the budget constraints that even as late as November 2018, he believed was capable of getting us into the play-offs. The gap between what Darren believed his squad were capable of, and ultimately how they have performed is huge, and really the manager himself should be considering - in an honest way - why that has turned out to be the case.

Over the years, I've adopted a very cautious position in terms of the changing of first team managers. Some of Yeovil Town's decisions to remove managers from their posts, I've strongly disagreed with. I'm a firm believer that the manager is an important cog that turns a much larger wheel, but that the Owner, the Chairman, the Board of Directors and even the Commercial Manager, and the Catering and Bar Management and Ticket Office management all strongly affect how that wheel turns. Changing first team managers at Yeovil Town will not cure all ills, when we have the known limitations of the club's lack of direction at Board/Ownership level, that we hope and pray will be resolved by new ownership.

However, in this instance, my feeling is that Darren Way's first team management has gone beyond the point of no return. In all management spells there is a shelf life, beyond which a manager's position becomes virtually untenable. Whilst I disagreed with the decision to remove Gary Johnson from his role, and even questioned whether Paul Sturrock had been given a reasonable amount of time to turn around everything that was on his plate, I could at least appreciate that there was going to be serious difficulties in each manager trying to change the fortunes. In some cases the 'point of no return' has been met roughly around the time that the Board have issued the P45, and so their view has coincided with mine.

But this is the first occasion I can recall, probably since Brian Hall's second spell in charge during the 1994-95 season, that the point of no return has flown past, and no action has been taken. In that 1994-95 scenario, with hindsight the Board at that time were probably financially hamstrung as a legacy of former Chairman Gerry Lock's mismanagement of the Huish Park move, and so were stuck with what they had, but in this instance, I cannot see what is holding the Board back from making a decision. Does 12 defeats in 17 matches, and three wins in 25 matches tally up with the Boardroom's ambitions? Or are they busy looking at the prospective takeover, and attempting to leave the question of who pays off the manager to a future owner, and thus burying it under the carpet?

Make no mistake, this is a clear and immediate issue, and not one where it's possible to kick the can down the road for a few months, whilst lawyers sort out the paperwork of a takeover. After Forest Green, we face Cambridge United, Morecambe, Port Vale (away) and Macclesfield Town as four of the five following fixtures. By March 16th at 5.00p.m. after Sol Campbell's lot have left the pitch, we could be in relative safety, or we could be knee deep in the brown stuff. If there is no leadership shown by the current ownership here (I have to assume they still have executive control of the club, given we've not been told otherwise) then it will be on their heads. The Board of Directors must either take action now, or provide the visible leadership to justify their (lack of a) decision.

I am absolutely speechless at what has happened to this club. Year on year there are things that puzzle me but one thing not mentioned specifically above is the team selection. Baxter has to right up there with the best players we’ve put out this year and he finds himself inexplicably on the bench. Add to that the number of ‘exciiting’ signings we make in January but none are given the chance to improve a tired looking, impotent attack. We’ve even turned Dobre from an exciting, confident runner into a negative, weak and predictable winger.

Whilst I accept the board are responsible for a huge amount of this mess, I look at those performance-related statistics and am absolutely devastated at how my club accepts those figures. I look at that team and I think it’s got a lot more than some of the teams we put out in league one! But they are so horribly misguided and brain washed it is frightening. Never have a I seen heads drop like they did at Cheltenham when we had a goal disallowed at 0-0!! Is that all it takes??

Darren set his own targets, failed. Adjusted his target to something of the polar opposite and is still failing. 3 wins in 25 is nothing short of embarrassing for this club who has come so far. I’m sick to death of watching us turn up with the same team expecting different results and listening to Darren’s interviews frankly makes my toes curl.

We’re rightly optimistic of new ownership but will they buy if we go down? I wouldn’t.

A first class review of the current demise of a football club which once punched well above its weight but now collapses to the verge of oblivion. If gates of around 2000 aren't enough to demonstrate that local interest has waned in what was once an aspiring and entertaining team, then it increasingly looks like leaving the football league becomes an inevitability.

Taff, you have hit a lot of nails on the head here. Well done.
Hopefully someone will sit J. Fry and the Board down, make him read this and answer "why are you not taking the action any sane and rational person would"?

It's an unholy mess. But nobody can say they didn't see it coming. It's been coming and in plain sight for at least two years. Lucky to survive last season. What seems, on face value, a good set of players, seem to have been ruined by a completely hapless and out of his depth manager.

Wake me up when the nightmare's over!

As ever a well considered and articulate piece. The essential fact here is 3 wins in 25 (TWENTY FIVE!!!) games.
Regardless of takeovers and transfer of stewardship (or full ownership, nobody knows due to Fry and Hayward’s abhorrent wall of silence) this is Fry and Hayward’s responsibility.
Fire Way now and we have a slim but vital chance to survive. Dither or pass the issue to the next in line, it’s too late, and we are certainly doomed to non league.

Is anyone really surprised at the awful showing since early season? Just listen to Way and his excuses, he says he takes responsibility but he doesn't, he says the players must learn from their mistakes but they don't, inexperience (are they all on the minimum wage?) referees and the opposition are all game for his criticism. He says he's kept Yeovil in the football league year after year but in reality there have always been a couple of sides that have, incredibly, been even worse in a league that gets poorer each season. Past January windows have seen some temporary improvement but that hasn't happened this time and is unlikely to while he's in charge. They are his players, selected to play to his instructions and it's embarrassing to watch. The whole club is a complete shambles and must have wholesale on and off field change to survive. Don't think it will be any better or cheaper in the National League with the current Board and manager, they are the masters of rip off and we're daft enough to indulge them.

The players proved at the start of the season that they have something about them. If memory serves me right we had a similar scenario at the start of last season and again after last year's Jan transfer window. But once Way and his coaching staff have had them for about 6 weeks we see the decline set in again.
As Swaby said above Dobre looks lost for large parts of the game. Pattison was electric going forward early season, now he looks a different player, and it's not just these two, it's happening to them all.
Madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Well everyone of the training staff must therefore be mad. Possibly we are as well for daring to hope for something different.
Time for Way and a good percentage of the present people inhabiting certain positions at the club to go. Even if we get relegated under a new regime at least we will have tried because as it stands we're going down with a whimper and a bucketful of inept excuses from an inept manager

I echo Will P’s comments and as I said a few weeks ago if DW stays we go down, if he goes we might stay up. No sign of DW doing the honourable thing so the club must act, quickly.

I'm so glad that I didn't renew my season ticket for this season. The club are clearly heading for the Conference and this might be a bonus in that they could start to win more games than they lose! The Stockport game showed us that this is a team that will struggle to survive in the Conference and even in the Conference South. Darren is brilliant at conjuring up plausible excuses for the defeats but there are far too many and his credibility has now waned. Time for a change. It's been the making recently of Manchester United and a new man will release much needed confidence into the club.

As usual a very honest account of where we are. I believe Norman Hayward made the decision to give Way a longer deal. So in my opinion Haywood should put his hand in his pocket and pay him off.

As ever spot on blog by Taff. The other question I would ask (at this very worrying time) is, does the prospective owner really want to own a non league club, because if not then I fear with Fry/Hayward this club could be going bankrupt, making the decision to sack Way even more vital for one final throw of the dice to stay up.

Even our board can see the writing on the wall. NH is frankly not interested he just wants profit on his investment and that is the land. Darren Way was employed as manager because he was the cheap option and nothing has changed he is still the cheap option because we would have to pay compensation to take anybody else's manager. So if the supposed takeover takes until we are mathematically assured relegation that is what will happen.

On the button here, Taff

Its clear from DW's latest interview after the Oldham game (Groundhog Day again) that not only does he not have a Plan B but he doesn't even have a Plan A.

He should have been sacked after the Stockport game when there might have been time for a rescue - too late now, I fear.

Brian Clough once included in his book a chapter entitled 'The Average Football Directors Knowledge of Football', which featured a blank page! Blank pages are running YTFC at the moment.

I don't think there is a team in L2 that The Glovers can beat - and probably, on current form, in The National League also.

Next season this time if there are no changes at the top YT will be fighting relegation from the NL and DW will still be the manager making the same excuses!

What a sad state of affairs.

Gutted!

This perception seems to me to be firstly factually but bizarrely valid and secondly a deeply confusing concern:

that after some early season promise it appears that everything positive about the playing style and team performance in general was deliberately altered.

DW is way past his best before date if there ever was one. He is a poor manager, tactician and coach. He has no self awareness otherwise he would have resigned last year. He should have been sacked last October. Like Taff, I suspect they gave him a contract so he will get a good pay off from new owners if they materialise. The board has exercised very poor judgement and only they know why. If he loves the club like he says DW should resign because its just not working Darren.

I agree we are in an almighty mess and after our defeat at Oldham I quite expect that we will be in the Nationwide league next season , I believe that we and Morecombe will be relegated. I to am totally confused by team selection , Nathan Baxter should never have been dropped he has been outstanding ,like wise Bevis Mugabi must feel confused in and out of the team and in different positions I have always considered him one of our better players. I am also at a loss to understand Darren's comments, he says one day that he is operating on very limited resources and its an achievement to keep Yeovil in the league he then says this is the most talented squad he has worked with. So which is it. My opinion is the league doesn't lie, we are at the bottom either because we are very poor or we are being badly managed, if we have any chance of staying up changes are needed now and not next week or even later. I hope I am wrong but I fear that I am right .

I think the problem for the Club is they appear clueless. Often in recent times when Managers have been relieved of their duties there has been another holder of a coaching badge in-house to take over. Given Skiverton's move to the Academy and Paul Terry's inexperience as a coach there is not an obvious solution to our malaise. The time for change has come and gone.
In January when Neal Marmon turned up things looked brighter, but after 2 games, it has resumed an all too familiar pattern. It is looking very ominous indeed now.

Good article and some very true comments from the real fans, I think only Dusty has hit the nail on the head as to why DW was given a new contract. The clueless board knew that there was a very good chance that the club was going to be taken over, knowing this and a misguided sense of loyalty to DW meant it made no difference to them when they gave him his new contract as they would never have to fire him and pay out the remainder of his contract anyway so why not extend the losers contract, As for DW resigning, is that another pig that's just flown over my house, DW is a useless manager and he knows it himself but he has a family so he will never resign and if I were in his situation nor would I, so whatever way (no pun intended) you look at it, it is Fry and Hayward who ultimately have to take the blame for the rot that has set in at the club since we were relegated from the championship.

The brutal truth is we can't sack him. John Fry was asked about him recently by a friend of mine as they travelled back from a game. His reply was that "he balances the books". Darren will not "walk away" the man has a family and would struggle to get a job managing a pub team, let alone another league club. We can't afford to get a new manager or pay him off.
So it's national League.

I have seen my club win one game this season!

Tactically we are a complete mess. It's like watching schoolboy (primary) football with everyone chasing the ball at the same time and no positional sense whatsoever. Just watch the first goals against us from Cheltenham (H) and Grimsby on video. Against Grimsby (not a great side) we played 1 up front at home.

I wouldn't buy the club and I can't see an "American businessman" doing so either.

An excellent article. We may never know why DW was given a contract extension.
I expect the deal with US people to quietly disappear.
The problems we face now are growing. In November the club should have sacked DW but instead they committed to him. This made it more expensive to sack in in January. The window is closed so any new manager could not bring in new players so his/her main attributes would need to lie in player motivation and tactics. I would hope that NH would see the gap between the club and a large number of disaffected fans

This blog is a very honest and accurate reflection of the current state of YTFC and sadly I see no signs of anything changing. Strangely I was discussing with my season ticket buddy Taffs previous “recent form” summary, wondering what it would look like now. Well now we know! Our team is totally adrift from the opposition. It's unbelievable how he and his coaching staff can turn a squad of reasonably talented individuals into such an ineffective team on the pitch. Most of the time, the player receiving the ball stops and has to consider his options, and usually ends up playing the ball square or backwards. Likewise our defensive marking is often totally lacking. Way can not make it work. I, for one, shall not renew my season ticket to watch National League!

In my 60 odd years of support I've never known the atmosphere at Huish so odious and toxic. How such an obvious managerial failure as Darren hasn't been sacked or walked away is truly baffling. Fry, Hayward and Way were an integral part of this club attaining Football League status. However, that triumvirate will go down in history as wholly responsible for the death of this once proud club.

Absolutely spot on article and agree with the pessimistic comments regarding the probability of non-league football next season. Whilst I think Nelson is an adequate goalkeeper he is nowhere near as good as Baxter and the decision to drop Baxter shortly after he won the team 3 points with a superb performance at Mansfield beggars belief. Way was given several new players during the recent transfer window but most of them are unused. Their fitness should not be an issue, they have come from full-time clubs and I wonder about the fitness of the players in the team given the number of late goals that we concede. If the sale goes ahead I would wonder about the buyer's motives as we are heading for non-league football with a clueless manager whose sacking would cost them additional expense.

Great analysis as usual. One overlooked aspect is that Way has effectively deployed a front four in most games (either 3 natural strikers and one out and out winger or two strikers and two out and out wingers). There appears to be very few clubs in the modern age that do this. Even Liverpool and Man City only use a front three. Add to this his desire to play one attacking central midfielder and Yeovil are over committed. It worked as a surprise tactic in the cup against Bradford last year but even poor teams can dominate the gaps in our midfield. Without the ball, supply to the front four is lacking. This is woefully naive management and Way’s inability to change it and strengthen the middle of the park speaks volumes. Way used the transfer window to reinforce once again his front line indicating that he is oblivious to the problem. Through backing him the board clearly are too.
