30 January 2019 : The American Dream
At the start of January, I raised the point that I was surprised at the sudden reappearance of the club's Football Advisor Mark Palmer and his apparently high profile within Yeovil Town Football Club. The question was why he appeared to have a matchday executive role that involved him directly talking to the first team manager Darren Way, and whether that had any connection with an early December rumour that had predicted his return to the club, and had coupled it with the possible stepping down of Chairman John Fry.

At the time, we knew that Mr Fry had used the stormy December 2018 Supporters Alliance Meeting to rubbish all of this as 'fake news'. Just over a week ago, roughly the same rumour resurfaced, and local reporter Chris Spittles headed to Huish Park to try to get an interview with the club, but instead ended up having to do an ITV feature from outside, with the club's Board and Ownership giving the local media the now familiar refrain that they were refusing to put anyone up to talk to the cameras.

On Tuesday afternoon, Chris Spittles then went public on Twitter, followed by a feature on BBC Somerset covering similar ground, mentioning a topic that has been on social media for a little while - the existence of an 'American Consortium'. The club haven't directly confirmed the accuracy of this, but have on Wednesday afternoon actually confirmed that something is brewing, in admitting they are in talks with 'potential investors'. So in principle we can assume that the substance of what Chris has said is broadly true, even if the club haven't explicitly said.

In terms of the timing, everything fits. Mark Palmer's last phase at the club coincided with the time period that former director Andy Rossiter said his attempts to persuade Norman Hayward to sell was active. We then had total silence from Mr Palmer until his sudden reemergence at matches in early December 2018. So I think it starts to become fairly obvious that whilst the 'official' Yeovil Town position is that Palmer was only there to produce a strategic review and direction for the Yeovil Town board, I think the reality is that he has been acting as a broker/agent on behalf of the current Owner, to help manage the sale of the club. In the case of Andy Rossiter's bid, it would appear that Hayward got cold feet and withdrew, so we'll have to wait and see whether this one actually goes through or not.

So what do we know of the American Consortium? Absolutely next to nothing, which is why Yeovil Town supporters shouldn't get too positive (or negative) just yet. Foreign ownership and big money ownership throughout the Premier League is a bit of a mixed bag in its success rate. For every Leicester City, there's a Leyton Orient. Often it's not just a case of whether the owner has pockets full of money, but down to their style of ownership. I've always stuck to the viewpoint that the reason why Bristol Rovers and Leyton Orient were relegated from the Football League, and why Notts County appear to be heading the same way, is their scattergun short-termism, and the impatience that 'big money' can sometimes bring. Even Yeovil Town experienced that during 2015, when we used four first team managers in a single calendar year, as panic seemed to set in following our drop from the Championship. That isn't down to money - it's down to sensible decision-making within a business.

So we need to understand both the wealth of the prospective Owners, as well as their attitude to football, and whether they have the experience of running an English lower league football club, or are prepared to learn the culture behind football at this level. I'd value the business expertise of Accrington Stanley's Andy Holt way above the personal wealth of Notts County's Alan Hardy in terms of the benefits that both have delivered for their football clubs.

In terms of the current ownership, my view is that they should have decided to sell up several years ago. There were key moments that raised alarm bells for me. The first was John Fry's admittance that when the club went up into the Championship, that the club had insufficient money. Fry's realisation of that issue should have seen a new share issue, or a public call-out for new investors to step forward - that never happened. I don't think the club was 'ready' for Championship football, which is fair enough because I don't think too many of us expected the club to get there, but given that it took until Game No.45 out of 46 before we were relegated, a little extra investment could have squeezed at least a second season out of us, or at least made the bumpy fall that followed after our relegation less traumatic than it was.

The second alarm bell came when John Fry warned of a dire struggle for the football club if the plans to build a Food Store on land at Huish Park failed. Fry said any failure of those plans to reach fruition would endanger the club's position in the Football League. Again, it was an admittance (in November 2011) that the club didn't have enough financial backing. That wasn't a one-off slip of the tongue by the Chairman when talking to the BBC, as in the club's Three Year Strategic Plan - a document published to SSDC that couldn't be taken out of context - the report warned that "failure to succeed with this current planning application which will allow for the development of the stadium site will consign the Club to play in the lower leagues and possibly return to Non-League football". Look at what has transpired over the last 3.5 seasons, and that February 2014 report - written whilst we were in the Championship division - looks pretty scarily accurate. When the Food Store plans failed two months later, why was their no Plan B?

The third aspect that raised concerns for me was Mr Fry's apparent refusal to do 'live' interviews. Aside from written statements, there hasn't been a proper two-way interview with either of the two main men since October 2016. The Supporters Alliance Group challenged Mr Fry about that and were told of a greviance that the Chairman claimed to have with BBC presenter Geoff Twentyman. It wasn't particularly convincing, as BBC Somerset's Claire Carter (in a separate studio) and other bodies such as ITV had been unable to get a live interview. At that point, there's a problem because the club information flow dries up, and the ability to ask challenging questions of the club's direction is diminished (I discount Western Gazette's shockingly poor December 2018 interview in this, given the journalist entirely failed to challenge or factcheck what was said). I found it ironic that Mr Fry complained about 'fake news' being put across 'social media' in December 2018. In the absence of any adequate communication from the club in this area, it is inevitable that the rumourmill will fill the void. So that problem was going to grow if it wasn't addressed.

The final point is more of a general one. Whether it's been Michael Bromfield in 2006 (I believe he made a second approach after that around 2008 or 2009), ex-Bournemouth owner Eddie Mitchell in 2014, the mystery Bath-based person that Mr Fry said was trying to buy the club in 2016, or Andy Rossiter's attempt to purchase the club in late 2017, the club have generally built a protective wall around the question of external parties trying to invest in the club. Mr Mitchell's and Mr Rossiter's attempts got statements issuing firm denials that anything was happening, whilst as mentioned earlier even the latest rumour of the American Consortium was labelled as 'fake news'. We only learned of the Bath-based interest two years after the event, and of course there may have been more. Each attempt to invest in the club - publically at least - has been batted away with a 'nothing to see, move along now' stance over the years.

The impression that has been given, has been that Yeovil Town FC is a closed shop that does not want outsiders. Even the opportunity for fans to purchase small batches of shares in the club (which used to be possible in the 1990s) so they could proudly say this was 'their club' is no longer possible. Any current minor shareholder cannot even pass their certificates on to their next generation, to keep their shareholding in their family - the constitution forces those shares to be returned to the club. All of this has been the case, whilst I've seen Yeovil Town's League One and League Two rivals take on new investors and owners, build new stands and facilities, and find ways of injecting money into the club. At Huish Park, everything has been frozen in time. The end result is stagnation. The club has never been given the opportunity to move with the times. Hayward's failing (and to an extent Fry's) has been to forget that he is the custodian of a Community Asset and not just the owner of a private company.

You hope that any prospective owner would avoid falling into any of the above traps. There has been inevitable additional speculation on who they are and what their plans are, but I rather doubt that anyone knows the truth at this stage. I have seen the name of Peak6 Investments LLC named on the rumourmill, but I think that is a question of timing - on Monday, the Chicago-based investment firm sold their 25 percent holding in AFC Bournemouth, leaving themselves free to take up an interest in another English club. So yes, it might be that they're getting rid of their Cherries stake to meet the FA's regulations on dual ownership, but looking around, Peak6's current and past interests have tended to be clubs that are either in, or on the edge, of European competitions, with Irish side Dundalk one of their interests, whilst they tried to buy a stake in French side St Etienne last summer. They also have a minority stake in Serie A side Roma. So my question would be why would they change their current profile and targets from top flight sides with the potential for Europa League or Champions League football and swap that for a club whose best ambitions are the Checkatrade Trophy?

I was also sceptical of some of Chris Spittles' comments on how the prospective owners might be affecting the club's current fortunes during the January transfer window and since the turn of the year. Yes, it's probably true to say that once negotiations have reached a certain stage - probably the agreement of a purchase price - that any future owner might insist on dual sign-off on any contracts that might be agreed with players. I can also see them insisting on some form of Executive control of the club at that point, to ensure that the existing owners don't leave any unexpected timebombs just before they exit the building.

But in general terms, our recruitment during the window feels roughly on a par with players we've brought in before - two Premier League Under-21 loan deals, and two permanent signings for players we've had on loan before. Given we've taken three permanent signings and three loan players off our books during January, at present we're two players lighter than we were on December 31st, so I'd be surprised if there has been a radical shift in our overall playing budget. Where I think the American people would have had an input, would be in financially committing to Ryan Seager's and Matt Worthington's wages beyond the end of the 2018-19 season, when in theory they would carry that responsibility as new owners. So I'd say the influence is more down to the length of the contract, rather than the weekly wage bill.

Due to the January Transfer Window closing tomorrow, it's also probably only in the summer that the shape and style of any new ownership would (hopefully) become clear. Some owners like to throw money at the playing squad, whilst some may believe that upgrading the stadium facilities, or providing a better club-supporter relationship would organically generate the extra cash needed on a long term basis. Others may see restructuring the way the off-the-field or on-the-field sections are run as a means to bring change. Either way, for most fans this has been long overdue, so let's hope it is not a false dawn.

I started going to Yeovil games at the old ground in 1967.I live in the eternal hope that Fry et al would one day go, returning the football club to it's true owners, the fans.
I have boycotted all matches locally here for three/four years now, and cannot wait to go back. That will be the day Fry has 'quote left the building', so juts waiting to see substance behind the rumour
So sad at the immeasurable damage he has inflicted on his totally neglected vital income stream us the fans.
I watch with quiet hope, but in this day of as Fry calls so much fake news, will watch this space.

Agree with Northern Glover but it is not just Fry
to blame for the current dire situation at our club.A clean sweep is what is required and then get a manager in who actually knows what he is doing.Doubt if Gary would be interested in coming back though! When I see some of the crowds in the National League South that are on a par with ours
I become very sad.Keep the faith fellow fans.

I, and my daughter Vikki, have boycotted all home games since 2008 in protest at the poor running of the club from the club's owners. Once the rumours started she texted that she would be up for a trip to Huish Park even from her Northern Ireland home. Let's hope both Hayward and Fry go as if Fry stayed in some capacity I doubt things would change at all as his dismissive attitude towards the fans has proved. Fresh blood and new ideas is the way forward but let's see if/once the new ownership is ratified.
