16 August 2017 : Three Games And A Crowd
Just before the 2017-18 season started, I said that this was the hardest season I'd known to be able to read into how good or bad Yeovil Town would do. Three games into the season and I'm not sure that I'm any wiser. In pre-season our final record was that we'd beaten all of the non-league sides we'd played, but had been beaten by all of the Football League and Premier League sides we'd played - all results went exactly as they would if you were predicting them on paper.

I will freely admit that whilst I was at Kenilworth Road, watching us play Luton Town on the opening day of the season, that I feared the worst. Because the Wolverhampton Wanderers game came so soon after that match, I didn't get time to blog about it. Time has passed a bit since then, but having reflected upon it, I would say that the 8-2 defeat was the worst 90 minute performance I have witnessed since Yeovil Town entered the Football League.

Unless there's been a red card, or a goalkeeper stretchered off, or an extreme injury crisis, there should be no circumstances where two teams in the same division should be that sort of gulf apart, particularly on the opening day of the season when most teams are at full strength without any fatigue, and where no manager should need to make motivational speeches to his players to get them up for the game.

The following day, I watched back the video highlights carefully and came to the conclusion that there was no single culprit that I could point the finger at. As usual fans like to pull out their less favoured players and use them as scapegoats for an entire performance, but I think on this occasion that would have been wholly wrong - this was a team-wide problem.

I'd also seen the other flip-side, where fans had tried to defend that performance. Appropriately their defending of it was about as good as their team's defending. The suggestion made by them (and by Darren Way post-match) that we could have scored three or four goals that day was only credible if they acknowledged that Luton had one goal disallowed, had hit the post, and had another shot cleared off the line. If we could have scored 'three or four' then Luton could have scored eleven or twelve.

On to Wolverhampton, and from the way that match unfolded, I sensed that Darren Way's No.1 priority was to not let the goal glut happen again. We showed very little attacking threat, but set up the defence in a way that implied that we were making sure we didn't get a second embarrassment. In fairness, it worked, and was probably appropriate for Championship opponents, even if with their nine changes that was pretty much their Second XI. We lost, but we came out with our dignity in one piece. It was much better, but you couldn't imagine a League Two season being built on that, apart from very selected matches.

Then to Accrington Stanley, where it seemed that we got a bit of both worlds. Greater attacking intent, but still with a wobbly defensive element to it. As I said in pre-season, that was the one obvious area for me where the squad appeared to be weaker. In Saturday's back four, all players were part of last season's squad. However, simple logic tells us that if the line-up of Bevis Mugabi, Omar Sowunmi, Nathan Smith and Ryan Dickson was better than last season's line-up of Liam Shephard, Alex Lacey, Darren Ward and Ryan Dickson (with Nathan Smith often replacing one of Ward or Dickson when injured) then we would have gone with that. Way clearly felt that the likes of Ward (when fit) and Lacey were stronger than Sowunmi and Mugabi and I wouldn't disagree with him. He will doubtless put a different spin on that for this season.

On the plus side, the attacking partnership of Francois Zoko and Olufela Olomola, supported by Otis Khan, looks as though it may have some legs to it. Doubtless we will see opposition teams look to cut out the supply to those players, particularly Khan, but against Accrington's defence they enjoyed an 'unplayable' spell where the game was won. If the club are to enjoy the more comfortable form they had during the first half of the 2016-17 season, then keeping Zoko, Olomola and Khan in good health and spirits looks to be the most likely key. It will then come down to whether attacking prowess or defensive wobbles win out in each game.

It will probably take a few more games for us to work out whether the 'Luton' performance or the 'Accrington' performance is more representative of Yeovil Town's season. Initial impressions are that we're probably going to score more and concede more than we did last season which then will boil down to whether a 3-2 or a 2-3 becomes the typical outcome.

The Accrington Stanley match also brought up the subject of Huish Park attendances again. The 2,464 crowd for the opening day of the season has been dissected in terms of the statistical significance on the news page. It should not have come as any surprise to anyone involved with Yeovil Town. This has been coming for a number of months.

Some of the suggestions have been that the low crowd was caused by both the 8-2 defeat at Luton Town and by the fact that Accrington Stanley were the opposition. I've also seen suggestions that the gate was influenced by people being on holiday during August. For the latter, past seasons show that usually the first home game of the season gets a very respectable crowd - last season's 3,715 ultimately proved to be the club's 7th biggest attendance, mainly beaten by local derbies, Christmas fixtures and the final game of the season, which again tends to pull in slightly larger numbers. September and November tend to be the seasonal lows - school term-time midweek fixtures will probably fill out a number of those slots, because those with young families have other priorities.

I think for the truth behind the sharp drop, you probably have to go back to last season, rather than anything specific to the 2017-18 campaign like Luton or Accrington. Yeovil Town adopt an odd policy of announcing their 'attendances' inclusive of Season Ticket Holders. A very high proportion of our support buy these each summer - usually just over 2,000 - meaning that when attendances are announced, these are already included. Anyone who saw fixtures last season such as the Hartlepool United game that gave the previous low point of 2,749 would have noted that the ground felt emptier than that. It struck me that not only were the walk-up punters not showing, but that for many games those who had pre-paid for their ticket were not turning up. Anecdotally, there were strong numbers of fans saying that they would not renew their season tickets this summer, and I'm sure that is what has happened.

Whilst some of those lapsed season ticket holders will now turn up into regular walk-up punters, at that point there are no guarantees that they will, and if they don't, the club can't include them in the attendance figures. But those fans will have made their decisions in March and April 2017, meaning I'd blame the three wins in 27 fixtures that completed last season, and not Luton/Accrington. Attendance drops have always been down to long term trends - individual results can cause a mini-wobble but never anything on that scale.

And this is a definite trend. Since our drop into League Two, that one solitary sub-3,000 crowd back in 2012 has been joined by two more in 2015-16, and eight more in 2016-17. I suspect the 2017-18 season will continue that trend. We've now met Accrington in three seasons at League Two level, and the crowds have been 3,207 (March 2016), followed by 2,991 (March 2017) followed by 2,464 (August 2017). On each occasion, Accrington have brought an increase in away supporters. Between the March 2016 match (which was an unfavourable Tuesday night fixture) and last Saturday's match, that works out as a loss of 786 home supporters. That's a 25 percent of the home crowd lost across an eighteen month period against the same opposition.

As I see it, the major factor is that the 'three wins in 27 games' accelerated that trend. Search the Yeovil Town playing records for a worse run of form under even the darkest days of the club, and you will struggle. Even for those who recall the end to Brian Hall's second spell at the club during the 1994-95 season, he ended his time with three wins in 18 matches, or four wins in 20 games. I can't find anything comparable to last season. With one of those three wins being a rearranged midweeker, and another being in the Northern outreaches of Morecambe, I know regular die-hard Yeovil Town fans who hadn't seen their team win in 2017.

The second factor is that there was no point at which you sensed that the Yeovil Town owners or board were in any way discontent with that, or aiming for a business plan that would provide a change in that direction. In fact there was silence (and therefore implied acceptance). Within that environment, the only presumption was that our 19th 2015-16 season finish, coupled with our 20th 2016-17 season finish would represent the future prospects of the club. For a club that had spent ten seasons at League One or above, that's an unappetising sales pitch.

How does the club reverse that trend? I suspect that it needs outside investment of some kind to provide it with some momentum. The more it shrinks, the harder it will be to reverse the trend. I don't think Darren's post-match comments concerning the gates are going to win too many missing fans back. In his own words, he said "I focus on the supporters that came and supported their football club today", directly implying those who didn't are "people being negative". Darren needs to focus on both those who did, and those who didn't show on Saturday, and not belittle them because if he doesn't (and this applies to all of the senior ranks at Huish Park) then getting a squad that can run until January will be hard.

At the moment we are reliant upon precisely nineteen players, which we know won't be enough. Like the 2016-17 season, it may be that the club can build up enough momentum with those nineteen players to at least keep its head above water once injuries kick in, but unless the additional bodies (that I suspect will be two more loanees) turn out to be surprise stars then that probably represents our limits in terms of squad size. We'll see where that takes us in due course.

To be fair to Darren, I don't agree that he was implying that absent supporters are "people being negative". I think that he meant that he wasn't going to get involved in arguments or discussions about why people aren't turning up. All he can do is try to please the supporters who do. That's fair comment. Of course, as we all hope, if the supporters at the match are happy, this will encourage others to come back.

A good thoughtful analysis. I felt the set-up against Luton was more at fault than individual peformances, giving space and options to a fast attacking team always eager to press ahead. Never was going to be an easy task and teething problems would be expected on the opening day against a pacy attack, but we hugely increased the disadvantage when lack of shape left gaping holes in both the midfield and defence.

Any view on attendances is a subjective opinion. I firmly agree however that the second half of last season was the main cause. I felt as it was happening that season ticket sakes would significantly decrease following what was a sort of going-through-the-motions unambitious period after the New Year.

Darren's comment about about fans I think was a quick answer made in the context of a heavy defeat weighing heavily on the mind and with immediate pressure on his short-term plans. We need to build on the positive attacking potential, but the worry is that the Khan gets sold and Olomola goes elsewhere in January.

This worry goes hand-in-hand with low attendances. Because while the fans can understand it can be hard to keep good players, the deeper problem is the perennial one of the club blindness to the cycle of falling attendances and squad resources to keep pushing each other down.

Can't disagree with anything but do wonder what happened in the second half against Accrington. Did Way send them out with instructions to be defensive or did they just not perform? In the past we have had a lot of good patches in matches but not 90 minutes. Also we have had a lot of defending far too deep when we have actually gone ahead.

Luton gave us exactly what we have deserved for some considerable time. it's a record that accurately reflects where we have got to as a club since the highs of a few years ago. You could even look at it as club vs club rather than 90 mins of football - I.e a contest of the strategy and ambition of the 2 clubs.... I'd say 8-2 was a very fair reflefion of that as well.

The reality is the stadium is empty because there is distance between fans and the club. The vision of the board is different to that of the fans and it's the lack of involvement and engagement with fans that has driven a wedge between them and ultimately people have lost interest. The team and coaching staff are simply not good or engaging enough to accept what might be going on behind the scenes and still turn up to watch them. We all relate to Darren as a former player - but he doesn't lead the club in the way that excites fans and drives them through the turnstiles - nor does his team produce attractive and/or competitive style of football. So what you've got is a poor team playing for an unambitious club. What's hard for fans is accepting excuses from Darren or the board when really the club isn't in any worse situation than when we first climbed in to league one and beyond. It's all down he persona of the club and the vibe it gives off - does it REALLY want to win/be competitive/get back to a level that costs more money? Or are they just happy to settle for mediocrity until Darren acclimatises to league football coaching and the players learn a few more harsh lessons? You'd have to say the last 2 seasons suggest the latter.

If anybody saw Karen Brady on Sky this evening she has said it perfectly - no club will ever be successful until the fans, the board and the playing staff are pulling in the same direction.

I always value your write-ups Martin, but see the squad and manager collective very low standard as being the direct result of Fry's overlong stewardship.
I have not attended a game for two seasons now, yet a few years ago I was proudly taking my two sons in law, and some of my 4 footie mad grandchildren. But the reality is that it is years since we could follow a YT season, and come away feeling we had experienced a worthwhile return for our time and money. Fry has so alienated the fans from the club to such an extent that it is manifesting itself in the record low gates, and whatever that implies longer term. Over the summer I challenged David Bell to get the club to come up with a kind of campaign statement, setting out realistic aspirations. We once more had yet another black hole as far as a club response, and again with absolutely nothing meaningful to pin our hopes, and money on. I know I am playing the same old negative record, but from this northern disaffected fan, and his 3 generations family of potentially supporter , until Fry goes I will not waste my mane or time. By way of comparison I spent a lot in the overachieved Championship season, attending northern matches, and seeing lots of expected defeats, but there was a huge difference. The team played with passion and commitment, and that has gone and will for me only be rekindled when Fry has left the club.
I resent the pops at supporter attendance levels, as being 250 miles away, seems to infer to the club a lesser fan, but that's academic. This is the first season I have not bothered to put the fixtures in my diary, whish says everything.

Another well thought out article, I commented earlier that the squad was to small when we couldn't even field a full bench for our first game of the season .regarding the low attendances i believe comments already made ie the very poor form at home last season are relevant i also feel prices are far to high especially for some one like me that travels from Northampton when i come to a home match, i also believe increasing car park charges to three pounds was an unwise move and bad PR by the club when we are desperate for support.
I object to having to pay for parking on top of high prices to watch football ,living in the midlands i watch a lot of Nationwide North football entrance eight pounds and parking at the ground free ,this gos for a lot of teams of a similar standard in this area .
I have supported Yeovil for 65 years and i will continue to watch when i can but i am very concerned re the future we don't seem to be moving forward and i wonder if i will be watching Yeovil in the Nationwide leagues in the days to come, certainly a serious look at pricing and incentives to attract supporters is urgently required .

Agree with most of the article, especially the parts that highlight the lack of ambition. We've never had a huge budget but under Gary Johnson we had a squad that worked hard, showed passion and always played attractive and forward thinking football. Under Darren we have a team who run hot and cold and who, even when they are 3-1 up, simply don't fill the fans with any confidence of victory. The low attendances are directly to do with last season. Whilst I will continue to support my team lest we end up with no team to support, I can completely understand why some people, after investing their time and hard earned money, have finally become disillusioned. The only plus side to this is that if attendances keep being poor it may force Fry and co to make changes. Whether or not we still have a financially viable club to support by then or not remains to be seen. Still, I enjoyed getting three points on the board and will optimistically be hoping for more of the same on Saturday!

Good article.
To be fair to DW I think he is doing the best he can with the budget available. Also, he may not lack ambition, but the club most certainly does. Hanging on to football league status for as long as possible seems to be the limit of those ambitions.
Whilst that remains the case fans will continue to trickle away. There is nothing for fans to get excited about and there hasn't been a buzz around the ground for a very long time.
DW seems to be building a young squad, but keeping that squad together for long enough to make real progress will be very difficult indeed. GJ managed it when he first joined the club but we are not the club we were back then. Back then we had ambition, momentum, growing support and a competitive budget. Very different now.

Always an interesting read, Mr Taff. I'm another exiled northern supporter (Newcastle), but there hasn't been much to shout about in the rare away games for me, either. I'm still a Darren Way loyalist, but I'm increasingly disillusioned with the number of loan players we field every season. Some of them are future stars, for sure, but it won't be with us. We need a bigger core of committed Yeovil players at the core of the team. I don't feel the club connection I used to have.
Still , I live in hope. That's what being a supporter of a small club is all about, isn't it?

It is what it is with Yeovil, and always has been. No investment. If the club fails to grow it will decline, with the exception of the recent flirt with the Championship which was brought about by a good manager and luck, where the club took advantage of neither.

As you say the low attendance on Saturday has been coming for some time .
We are now going to games without any expectation of being entertained at all .
The stats of the last 4 seasons say it all -

184 games , 175 points , 172 goals .

Fry has said before that the club needs more support , but the question is , what is there to support ?

Via ciderspace a message to the chairman,
Dear John Fry,
If after the FGR debacle the 500 plus fans get their money back, once again only 3/4 games into the season , then please send me details of where I send my refund application as it will be a profitable option for me to attend YT matches.
