Big Kick-Off Sees Clubs Reach Out To New Audience

Clubs across The Football League are taking advantage of their two week head start to the new season by giving young fans the chance to see their opening League fixture for free or at significantly discounted rates.

In total, more than half of League clubs are offering free admission to youngsters with others offering cheaper admission, kid-a-quid promotions and family fun-days.

Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney said:

"With The League enjoying the spotlight for the first fortnight of the new season, clubs are making a special effort to give new fans a taste of what League football has to offer. Even if they follow a Premiership team, we want to see them down at their local Football League club watching some exciting football."

Across the season as a whole, 38 League clubs will be offering 'Kids Go Free' schemes at every home match as part of The League's 'Fans of the Future' initiative, which aims to get the next generation of supporters watching their local League club. Consequently, there will be free entry to youngsters at more than 800 League matches during the 2006/07 season. In all, 60 of The League's 72 member clubs have committed themselves, so far, to participating in the second year of 'Fans of the Future'.

League Chairman Lord Mawhinney continued:

"In its first season 'Fans of the Future' schemes gave more than 200,000 young fans the opportunity to see live football. This season, Football League clubs are continuing to make a genuinely impressive contribution to getting the next generation of football supporters into their grounds. I would be very happy to see hundreds of thousands of young fans taking them up on their offer."

It has been a regular gripe of many Yeovil Town fans that in this sort of area of promotions, offers and schemes to generate interest in, and consolidate and further increase support of, the club, it has shown little initiative or inventiveness over the years. If anyone knows what 'special effort' YTFC is making for Fans of the Future please let us know, as we would enthusiastically promote it here, if indeed it transpired there was anything to promote.
