24/04/2016 : Taff's Gloversblog : Decision Time For This Year's Squad
24 April 2016 : Decision Time For This Year's Squad
It’s that time of year again when we all start to speculate with our friends about who will stay and who will be let go when the club announce their ‘retained list’ on or around the last day of the season. This gives us the opportunity to play theoretical ‘Football Manager’ and plan how we would shape the team for next year’s title push! (Or mid-table obscurity depending on what you want to aim for)

The opinions below are my own, and may be controversial – please feel free to comment if you disagree or otherwise.

Artur Krysiak
Last season was one to forget for Artur, with early mistakes meaning he failed to nail down the #1 shirt whilst a succession of loan ‘keepers came and went. This year however he has really turned things around. As with most ‘keepers Artur has his weaknesses but his performances this year have earned the team many points and himself many Man of the Match awards. At 26 he is still very much learning his trade and will only get better over the coming years. Firmly established now as the #1, as he is out of contract in the summer I would hope the club can nail him down for another couple years. One thing to beware of is that Artur was in this position with Exeter City, whom he felt he was too good for – so we may see Artur flying the nest.

Verdict – New Contract (2 years)

Chris Weale
At the opposite end of his career path is Wealey. Combining the role of Goalkeeping Coach and also a solid backup ‘keeper, Wealey can generally be relied on to cover for suspensions or injuries. I would expect things to remain the same in the new season with a new contract offered with the same duties. I feel he brings more to the role than his processor Gareth Roberts, in that the defence can feel a bit more confident with Wealey between the sticks – even if he does occasionally make the odd howler.

Verdict – New Contract (2 years)

Nathan Smith
I was extremely disappointed with Smithy last year, possibly as I thought in last year’s pre-season that left back (along with goalkeeper) was a position we had good strength and depth in. This season has been better. At left back he has looked OK, nothing spectacular and had he not been drafted in to cover for injuries and suspensions at centre back I would probably have let him go this summer. However following a string of superb performances in difficult circumstances I now no longer have a feeling of dread when I see Smithy line up in the centre of defence. Capable at League 2 level, not so sure further up the ladder, so a shorter contract on the table.

Verdict – New Contract (1 year)

Jakub Sokolik
After a long injury lay off this year was very important for Jakub. As a young centre back, still only 22, he needs to be paired with an experienced head who knows the game. Once Darren Ward joined the club I think Jakub has improved and will continue to do so. As Ward has been absent with injuries lately I think Jakub needs to see that as an opportunity to lead the defence a bit more. Whilst he is one of those players that go under the radar at the moment I think he could become a key part of the team and someone who we can build around. Lengthy contract on the table, hopefully his injuries are behind him.

Verdict – New contract, (2 years - future Captain/Vice Captain)

Ryan Dickson
An inconsistent season for Ryan, but I can’t think of anyone who has worked harder for the club this year. Has scored some vital goals and always gives the defence or midfield a wide option anywhere up the left side. Ryan gets some stick for his delivery of crosses but overall I would suggest that is more a tactical issue rather than technical – as most of the time his balls in from the left have been good. Still has one year left on his contract, but will need to improve to earn a new deal in my opinion.

Verdict – Retain, in contract.

Omar Sowunmi
One of the weirdest situations of the season for me was seeing Omar (a 17 year old centre back) preferred upfront to recognised strikers. Credit to him he did well at a time when we needed something different and has suffered from injuries which have curtailed his playing time. I’m not sure we could afford to carry someone who isn’t proven at this level and as we have seen is prone to injuries. Out of contract this summer, I’d invite Omar back for pre-season training but wouldn’t offer him a contract unless he can impress.

Verdict – Release (but invite back for pre-season)

Alex Lacey
I have been very impressed with Lacey this season. Only really called on to step in for injuries or suspensions but has been solid when called upon, and surprisingly good in the air. He will want more playing time next season and given his age has a lot of potential. He still has a year left on his contract and I would look to extend this by a further year this summer or at least before the January transfer window.

Verdict – Extend Current Deal by a year

Darren Ward
I believe Darren’s arrival was key to stabilising our defence, it brought real experience and leadership to a very young backline. I was very glad to see us sign him up until the end of next season. His injuries recently have been a concern and I think it clear that he will retire at the end of his current contract with us. Important thing now is to rest him until next season and ensure he has a good pre-season. We will need him to lead the likes of Jakub and Lacey next year as they develop further.

Verdict – Retain, in contract

Ben Tozer
I am a huge fan of Ben Tozer. He breaks up play and reads the game quite well. I think he was a huge miss for us at the start of the season. Going forward into next season I’m not sure where he fits in though – see entry below for Darren Way. His contract is up this summer and I would give him another year with the intent to extend this in January if he is playing (system depending).

Verdict – New deal (1 year, with plans to extend for a further season in January)

Matt Dolan
I think Dolan is a player who divides fans. As the playmaker he will try passes that if they come off will undo a defence but when they don’t come off fans often get on his back. In that regard he reminds me of Lee Johnson or Sam Foley. What also doesn’t help his case is that he is one of those players who tends to play the game at a walking pace and so is an obvious target for stick. Whether he also carries more weight than most professional footballers or whether its just the way he has his shirt untucked he often gets stick. For my money we are a far better side when Dolan is involved, when he has been injured we lack any creative spark. I would hope next year he can become a key leader in midfield if he can come into pre-season lean and fit. If he can add a bit of athleticism to his game then he may be the difference between mid-table and a play-off push. Dolan seems to be a player who plays well only when confident and needs to be man managed like a goalkeeper or striker. Next season will be a big year for Matt, sink or swim.

Verdict – Retain, on contract.

Kevin Dawson
Following a terrible time with injuries it’s good to see Dawson getting some football. I think it’s clear that he hasn’t had a full pre-season and next year hopefully we should see Kevin back to his old self. Hopefully we will see him running down the right wing next year whatever system Way uses and to ensure he knows how highly we rate and appreciate him I would offer him a one year contract extension even though he still has a year left on his current deal. What Dawson brings is not only energy but also he has the confidence to put a cross in first time, something that is lacking in most sides in the lower leagues. When Yeovil have been played off the pitch this season it was often by teams who can play one touch passing and we will need to aspire to that level if we want to progress. One niggling issue is his injury record, like Ward he’ll need to be carefully managed over the summer and pre-season.

Verdict – One year extension to current deal, potentially with clause for major injury.

Marc Laird
Laird is like the polar opposite of Ben Tozer for me. Whilst he was out injured I thought he could be one of the players to come back and save us, I was full of hope and he has largely disappointed. He played 40-odd times for Tranmere as they were relegated out of League 2 last year and I can see why. Some people say he has a great range of passing and breaks up the play but I haven’t seen any evidence of that myself. To break up play we have Tozer and to make those key passes we have Dolan, Laird fulfils neither role and ends up being a passenger in midfield, often chasing play rather than anticipating it. One positive I can say about Marc is that he has the ability to make some incredible challenges – when he looks like he has been beaten by an opponent he goes to ground and somehow comes away with the ball. However for me he has no future at YTFC.

Verdict – Out of Contract - Release

Simon Gillett
Again another case of major injury issues. However I’m very disappointed with Gillett’s move to Peterborough, unless the club needed him off the books to bring in Lita (see below). It seems inevitable that he will leave in the summer with his contract up. Considering he has been on the sidelines for much of his time with us and has been on good money – I would suggest probably the highest paid player at the club. Simon is a probably a Championship level footballer and to have him kept out of the side by League 2 (at best) quality players indicates that something isn’t right. I would however really like to see him sign a new deal on reduced terms as he is undoubtedly a talented footballer – I just can’t see it happening.

Verdict – Contract up, will leave.

Jack Compton
I really rate Compton. He has quality and trickery and in my opinion genuine ability. One thing I’d like to see him do though is play on the left wing rather than cutting in from the right wing – something for Darren to consider. Jack is one of the most exciting players I’ve seen in a long time when he is on form and injury free. A no brainer for me would be to offer him a new deal, the only decision is the length of that deal. Given his injury record I would go with a one year deal this summer, with the intention to add a further season in January – as long as he stays injury free. Maybe like Dawson I would include a clause about appearances or serious injury.

Verdict – New deal 1 year with plans to extend

Jordan Gibbons
Given his injury ravaged season, no choice here but to release Jordan. I bought into the Sturrock idea of flying wingers with lots of crosses – just like that idea, Jordan never took off.

Verdict – Out of contract, release.

Wes Fogden
Given the amount of time Fogden has spent on the sidelines I haven’t had much chance to see Wes. He came with a good reputation but even when he was fit he didn’t stamp himself down as the first name on the team sheet. I’m not sure the club can carry him as a passenger next year. Hopefully he’ll find a new club.

Verdict – in contract, free to find a new club.

Mark Beck
Along with Jordan Gibbons the decision on Mark Beck is a no brainer. Beck is done at YTFC. 11 games and no goals for Wrexham in the Conference (Vanararma National League) hasn’t really helped his cause. At only 22 he can still find his level maybe not as a striker.

Verdict – In contract, released/free to find another club.

Ryan Bird
Fan favourite Ryan Bird baffles me. He scored a number of goals earlier in the season under Sturrock but I think he’s been found out in recent months. He reminds me of a more skilful Mark Beck – and I’m not sure that’s a compliment. Bird seems to only have one idea, the flick on. Pump the ball long and Ryan will flick it on, but that’s all he’s got. When Omar Sowunmi was upfront he would just flick the ball on, but he’s a defender by trade and is 17/18. Bird does however seem to get in the right place at the right time – but I think we need a higher calibre of striker at the club. At 28 he’s not going to get better so I think he needs to move on.

Verdict – In contract, free to find a new club.

Shaun Jeffers
Jeffers on the other hand is a tricky one for me. Jeffers on his day is very good, his movement, his control make him a handful. Unfortunately ‘his day’ happens once or twice a season. Strikers generally are judged on their goals and Shaun hasn’t delivered however much I hate to admit it. Similar to Ryan Bird I think we need to ruthless here, we aren’t good enough in front of goal and that means those who are here need to be moved on. Shaun can still make a go of it as he’s 24, and maybe he’ll hit a purple patch elsewhere like AJ Leitch-Smith, Sam Hoskins and Kieran Agard amongst others.

Verdict – Out of contract, release.

Leroy Lita
When we signed Lita I thought we had hit the jackpot, but obviously I was thinking of the Lita of a few years ago. He has scored a couple goals and looks to be getting there with his fitness but I’m not convinced. All good strikers have that ability to be pop up in the right place at the right time, and even with age you don’t lose the knack of putting the ball in the back of the net, so maybe he could be useful next year given a good pre-season.

Verdict – Out of contract, invite back for pre-season training.

Francois Zoko
Technically I think Zoko is the second best striker I’ve seen in a Yeovil shirt (the first being a controversial decision, Ishmael Miller). His hold up play and retention of the ball has been so important for us this year. I’d prefer to see Franc as one of two strikers rather than wide on the left or in the middle of a 3. Yes he doesn’t have the predatory instincts of Paddy Madden (or back in the day Phil Jevons) but Zoko is a different type of forward, one who creates and contributes to the team as much as sticking the ball in the net, which he also does.

Verdict – Out of contract, new 2 year contract.

There have been a few loanees through our doors this year but no point in commenting on everyone, below are just the ones we still have on the books:

Connor Roberts
Connor has done very well this season, much more so than anybody would have expected. He hasn’t looked out of his depth and obviously has a future in the game. He will probably do well in the end of season awards. I think we’ve done a good job with him from Swansea’s perspective so hopefully we can maintain that relationship. If I was deciding on the system for next season I would hope that we wouldn’t need a right back on loan so I would wish him well wherever he ends up next on loan.

Liam Shepherd
Only a handful of appearances this year, and it was a strange signing in my opinion given he couldn’t step in at right back for Connor’s international duty. He looks good on the ball though and you can see that he’s at the next level that Connor will be looking to hit next year. On his way back from a serious injury hopefully he continues to get back on track.

Harry Cornick
As a young forward Harry has a lot of potential, but as with all young players he’s a bit inconsistent. However I think he stands a good chance of making the grade higher up than League 2. I’ve never been a huge fan of his but when he turns on the style he’s more than capable at this level already. Would be useful to have on the bench next year if he’s not farmed off elsewhere by his FFP cheat parent club.

Liam Walsh
Simply put, super star. This guy will be in the Premier League within a couple years. His ability and the way he reads the game are more like someone who has been playing the game for years. If we can get him back on loan for next year that would be an incredible signing. He needs to add a little bit more forward play to his game (and by that I mean getting amongst the goals) but that will come.

Tahvon Campbell
Of the forward loanee trio I think Campbell has the best chance of making it at a higher level. In his time with us he has improved his hold up play and seems to have matured a bit. He now needs to add goals to his game. Hopefully he can get near the first team at West Brom next year.

Brandon Goodship
Solid striker, never overly impressed or stamped his authority on a game. But he is young and will probably get there (like Cornick). I wouldn’t be interested in bringing him back however, as I’ve stated above we need to improve the quality of our front players. Most disappointing is that we haven’t got a ‘Goodship lollipop’ song for him.

It has largely been a season to forget in terms of appearances for the youth squad members, however with the developments behind the scenes I’d hope to see a few make the bench next year. I have big hopes for Ollie Bassett and others, if they aren’t getting near the first team though they need to be getting some extra experience out on loan.

Honourable Mention:

Josh Sheehan
Whilst he isn’t with us at the moment I thought Josh did OK. Obviously his replacement, Liam Walsh, has been on a different level since his arrival. I think Josh has a bright future in the game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back with us next year if we are short of cover in central midfield.

Stephen Arthurworrey
We have been blessed with some truly amazing loanee centre backs at the start of their career: Caulker, Duffy, Burn to name but three. Add Arthurworrey to that list. He is just starting training again after his knee injury and his contract is up at Fulham, again. If he is available I would hope that Darren puts an offer on the table for him. Stephen needs an experienced head alongside him like Ward or Tozer, rather than Sokolik who with all due respect is still learning the game like Stephen. I think he will have a great future in the game and hopefully for the next couple years that can be with us.

Darren Way
What can I say? What he has achieved in turning around this season has been very impressive. Hands up I thought he was a ‘Skivo Mk.II’ in that he was cheap and would be immune from a fans’ backlash as another Mr Yeovil. However he has managed to turn the club around and deserves so much credit. However, now comes the real test. Now he needs to decide what sort of team we are going to be. Under Sturrock we hoped to be about lots of crosses and lots of goals, obviously that didn’t work out. Under Darren we have looked solid at the back but uninspiring going forward, however he delivered safety. We will need a new system, a new ethos and some new (better) players if we are to progress and move away from bottom end of League 2. Do we play possession based football, counter-attacking, long ball, or a balanced play with plenty of width? Making these decisions will be tough, but the hardest part will be inspiring the team next year. With all due respect it’s easier to get players fighting to save themselves from relegation rather than trying to push up the table slightly.

Next year I would like us to play with 2 strikers with 2 wingers to get the best out of Zoko, Compton and Dawson. However Darren wants to set the team up we will need the players to be able to adapt to different formations and situations – we have a good base with some players that can play in different positions, now we need to add some quality.

Terry Skiverton
Skivo was subject to plenty of criticism during his last time as manager and under the reign of Sturrock. As our defensive coach he took a lot of stick when we were shipping goals left and right. It is only right then that he be given praise following our improvement in that area. Whether Skiv has found his perfect role (as an assistant) or whether his future lays in management elsewhere I hope he is around for a few years yet – I think Darren needs him as much as Terry needs Darren. Funnily enough when the results started improving the calls for Darren’s, Skiv’s and John Fry’s head all subsided. Achieve by Unity.

Heres to next season.

Interesting comments & I only disagree with Matt Dolan who has yet to hit a free kick or corner anywhere near where it is needed . His passing is hit & mainly miss or backwards. He is to slow to tackle anyone. Does not score goals.
I also think Ryan Dickson is better than your comments

Agree mostly with this good article, not convinced by Compton and thought Dolan was a better player when he was here on loan, Walsh can pick a pass and has vision of a player with years more experience. We have a goalkeeper coach and a defensive coach, why no striker coach? One is badly needed

Agree with most of your appraisals but I have struggled to see the attraction of Jack Compton and although Ryan Dickson cannot be faulted for effort l don't feel confident with him defensively. The priority has to be to find another creative midfielder if Liam Walsh cannot be lured back and what every team is after, a goal scorer! It would be nice to see Ollie Bassett given a run out more often maybe now we're safe there's an opportunity in the final two games.
PS Thanks for all the players for their efforts in recent weeks it looked a lost cause! Big thanks to Darren Way

Firstly, I must congratulate Darren Way. I was not in favour of his appointment but he has proved me completely wrong so very well done Darren. I think Darren knows who he would like to keep and it will definitely be the current defensive players contracted to the club including Ryan Dixon probably. He needs a right back but whether getting Arthurworrey, who I rate highly, is the best option I don't know. I think we need three new forwards and a dynamic midfielder - Zoko may be retained but he is not the second best forward Yeovil has had nor was Miller the best! Our best number 9 in my view was Leon Best and the best forwards, certainly in recent years Jevons and Madden - all three scored goals and we need one like them or even two. Anyway, we have a potentially better year to look forward to and moving up towards the top of the league. I would like us to be playing Villa in league 1 in 17/18!!!

It's our front line Zoko been good we look better when he plays just need more goals.

Who would you want if you could to come back to yeovil paddy madden Joe Edwards ?

Excellent assessment as usual. I think Darren's main challenge will be trying to create an improved team with the budget he is given. Can't see that being increased.

Maybe a little bit of credit should go to PS - most of the squad were signed by him.The worst run of injuries I can ever remember robbed him of the services of many of them too often.
Given that the emergency loan system is ended now, will we need a bigger contracted squad, thus spreading the playing budget more thinly?
I fear that 2 or 3 of the players we would like to keep may get better offers elsewhere.

I think your analysis of the middle of the park is wrong. When Walsh is out we really see the true Matt Dolan and it isn't very good. Sideways or back and dead, dead slow. At least Laird & Tozer can break up play

generally agree wholeheartedly. Darren has done a truly magnificent job and I trust we're keeping him!!! not so sure about Skivo. Don't agree with comments made about Jack Compton, maybe people have forgotten the away match at Wimbledon???? Focus has to be at the front. Lita is a proven goal machine, when fit; but can his ageing legs keep up with his poachers football brain? We need to change something though, if we want do better than mid-table next season
