18 February 2016 : A Gamechanger - Or Much Ado About Nothing?
This week has seen Yeovil Town Chairman John Fry put out a statement indicating that he is willing to 'consider' any 'serious offers' to buy shares in the Football Club from any would-be investors. It's created a lot of talk out of that, but once you sit back and analyse what he's actually said, you wonder how much of this is a genuine gamechanger that might provoke a change of club ownership, and how much of it is an exercise in stating the bleedin' obvious.

On the news page, and in the first paragraph of this blog, you'll find the deliberate emphasis put on the fact that Mr Fry will consider (not necessarily accept) any serious offers (indicating that there is an undefined benchmark by which any offer made below that line is deemed to be a non-serious offer).

Take any object that you own - with the possible exception of those things in your life that have absolute sentimental value that you may see as priceless. If someone give you a good enough offer for the car you drive, the house you live in, or offers you a new job on sufficient enough money, there will come a point at which you'll say to yourself "this is a good deal for me" and you'll shake hands. You won't consider any silly offers, but you'll 'consider' anything that starts to look like a 'serious offer'. Inside the football club, the same applies to the players on our books - every player will have a valuation in mind above which Darren Way (or John Fry!) might say this is a good deal for the club.

As such, being told that Mr Fry would 'consider' a 'serious offer' didn't surprise strike me as being necessarily any more radical than if he'd said that he would consider any serious offers for our players. We know there's an asking price, but for commercial reasons we won't know what that price will be for that player until the day that it's met. The same will inevitably apply to the club itself. So the question I'd ask out of this, is when John Fry's views are read back with that sort of 'everything has its price' attitude in mind, then has he said anything over and above that which would suggest an active wish to offload his responsibilities to the club?

By Wednesday, the Gazette suffixed one headline on this subject with "... as John Fry looks to sell" and this appeared to result in The 72 website running a headline around Wednesday teatime of "Yeovil Town put up for sale by owner" with their opening paragraph reading "Relegation threatened Yeovil Town have been put up for sale by owner John Fry according to the Western Gazette". This has all the markings of a tale that gets taller every time it gets told! If Mr Fry was actively looking to sell his stake in the club, then I think the choice of words used would have been more along the lines of "we need a new investor" or "we want to sell the club". As I read it, he's said neither. He's said he will consider offers - mere English politeness, rather than an assertion.

In any case what The 72 website probably haven't grasped, and the Gazette don't really allude to it, is that the actual man who will almost certainly decide whether any shares are bought or sold at Yeovil Town is Mr Norman Hayward. We've not heard his opinion on the subject. Fry has acted as the front man for a number of different owners - Jon Goddard-Watts, briefly David Webb and then more recently the assumption is that he is the man acting as the voice for the media-shy Hayward. Although both own a near-equal shareholding in the parent holding company - the Huish Park Stadium Partnership - with Fry's 51 shares theoretically outweighing Hayward's 49 shares, in the company that ultimately owns 92 percent of the Football Club, the key thing has always been the question of who has provided the cash input for the Directors Loan Account that was presumably used to offset the purchase of the shares. As such, the ultimate control will always fall to the person who was able to provide that funding. If John Fry wants to 'sell' his shareholding, then there's little doubt that Norman will be the one who gets first refusal.

On BBC local radio this week, I heard the suggestion that this news could be groundbreaking because it was the first time that Mr Fry had hinted that he might decide to call it a day at Yeovil Town. I virtually fell off my chair laughing. There have been numerous 'will-he, won't-he' moments with the Chairman over the years, either when the ownership has changed, or when management teams have changed, but in the end Mr Fry has remained. Back in November 2001, just after Hayward left following his first spell with the club, selling out to Jon Goddard-Watts, Fry mused to the local media that he might be on his way out:

"I am here to do a job but after six years you have to start thinking about putting your family before the football club. I have had family problems recently and I am not getting any younger. Any decision about my future is down to what is best for the interests of the club and the board of directors. I would not want to stand in the way of the club."

Fifteen years later and he is still firmly in situ. There will obviously come a time when he does decide that it's time to enjoy his retirement, but as the above November 2001 scenario shows, I wouldn't start holding your breath - certainly not based on the words he has actually said. Anyway, the time to truly perk up and pay attention will be when Mr Hayward starts putting out messages about wanting to spend more time tending to his garden, or if an external bidder with a significant amount of cash comes over the horizon. We've had a few examples of the latter in the past which have not reached fruition, so even that may not present a guarantee of a sale. This week's words from Mr Fry may provoke a would-be owner to step out and call his bluff and test what he would 'consider' as being a 'serious offer' and that's probably the point that we might see a proper gamechanger.

All of this tends to distract from the greater focus, which is the remaining sixteen games of our 2015-16 League Two season. I had meant to blog about this last week, when we had our mini-break from football due to the postponement of the Plymouth Argyle match. At that point, we were sitting pretty, with a nice comfy four point cushion separating us from the Relegation Zone. Rather oddly, one of the messages I'd planned to write about was regarding Darren Way's warning of 'complacency' - his attempt to remind people that just because we'd got above the dotted line, that didn't mean it was all done'n'dusted.

In about the most brutal way possible, Darren's warning has been given clear focus - a single defeat to Hartlepool United, in a relegation six-pointer, coupled with York City suddenly finding Bootham Crescent to be of their liking, and what was a four point buffer has become a two point deficit and a return to the relegation zone. Ouch! So we now go into those 'easy' home games against Portsmouth and Plymouth, followed by another six-pointer against Dagenham and Redbridge, knowing that we're back to playing catch-up on the opposition once again.

I'd kind of expected this might happen at some point. We've known over the years that both promotion and relegation fights have twists'n'turns to them. You'll get one weekend where every result goes your way and you start mentally planning your summer holidays, thinking it's all over. Then the next weekend, you lose and all your rivals win, and everyone turns into a blubbering wreck. Obviously with Pompey and the Pilgrims as our next two games, we'll do well to reverse that situation over the next two games, but it's the long term situation that will be the important one. We also shouldn't lose sight of the fact that even if York City's recent form does end up driving them away from relegation problems, then it may be that we end up hauling in one of the other clubs above them, such as Hartlepool United, who have been in poor form for a number of months.

At the moment, our form since the turn of the year would be good enough to keep us up - 10 points from the last six games, comprising of three wins, one draw and two defeats. Repeat that over the remaining sixteen games, and that would be another 26 points, which would give you a nicely rounded 50 points, which given League Two only relegates two clubs each year should be enough to keep the club afloat. The acid test is of course how the mentality of the team and the supporters changes if we do get a couple of defeats in a row, or some other similar set-back. So far, Darren has handled the mental side of that sort of thing well, although it's still very early days in his management spell. Hopefully if we do find the next two home games a challenge, that we can pick up enough points to make the likes of York and Hartlepool nervous. It is quite likely that this will be going all the way to game No. 44, 45 or maybe even the final 46th game to discover our fate.

Couple two things about JF, ie. building a defensive structure to resist challenge and being resentful of all motive that questions policy even on a single issue, then it seems feasible that he sees the Trust as something to be very cautious about.

The natural but overdue progression to a Trust is possibly something JF finds hard to accept as reasonable evolution - even in the context of sensible preparation, in advance of expected government stipulation that all clubs have supporters directly involved with their clubs.

I think JF is a bit taken aback the Trust has actually happened, and that his natual suspicion of motive that won't allow him to see it as a normal route has - with his latest words - led him to try and find some wider motive that his natural caution tells him must be afoot.

In doing so he may actualy start a process that he was avoiding. Or maybe he indeed has had enough. Or is subtlely touting for a sky-high price. But either way I think that while the major move to a Trust is clearly the catalyst, he's mainly driven to test the water by his innate suspicion of any supporter initiative of any size or significance.

These are my personal thoughts on the recent events at Huish Park, I have watched as John Fry has hit out at all and everyone who has questioned the management of the club during the last couple of seasons, I find some of his retorts to be almost childish and akin to throwing your toys out of the pram. He says he will sell his shares if the price is right and that in itself is just another way of saying if you can do any better buy the club and try, he clearly sees the club like it is his own personal toy and questions anybody to do better, his random rant about the 500,000 each board member had put in (trying to scare of new directors?) when further questioned proved to be
rubbish. For what it is worth I believe YTFC with its success has funded itself over the last few years and has cost Mr Fry and his board nothing but their time, now things aren't going so well he and his board either have no money or are unwilling to invest in the club and would be quite happy to see them exit the league and go back to non-league football, where the 2000 hardcore supporters could once again carry the club in all but the most difficult of times,he clearly doesn't want to relinguish control of the club and the supporters trust if it takes off is the biggest threat that he has faced in all of his years at the club hence his hostility and negativety towards it.

Firstly, an excellent article as usual, putting into productive John Fry's recent comments and pointing out how ridiculous some of the 'conclusions' drawn by areas of the Press and indeed supporters have been.
The whole Trust issue confuses me however. Some say JF is running scared of it, why should he be? At present they offer no threat and why indeed should they? Their mandate suggests that they hope to form into a body of like minded folk hoping to harness constructive support.
I often get frustrated by off field shortfalls and also feel that the Club has definitely lost links with supporters and really do hope the Trust can build bridges here. However as I have said before, it's 'representatives' and spokesmen at times have not helped themselves in this quest with their choice of comments and attitudes.
Only this week we see transcripts of a radio interview, on the one hands supposed tto be a personal viewpoint, but using wordings such as 'as a trust we' , 'we want' and 'we don't want'. This radio interview then publicised the Clubs catering problems, suggesting nobody would want to eat there. Yes, I too am well aware and have indeed raised concerns about lots of issues here, but should this be the stance of a 'supportive body' to both curry favour and at the same time slate the Club on a radio programme? Sadly their in my opinion seems to be various folk involved with hidden agendas and even personal vendettas. I really hope I am wrong and can be encouraged to get involved.
Meanwhile at the moment, the focus needs to be supporting Darren and bring grateful for the excellent work that he and his team are doing.

A good summation.
However maybe the owners are trying to sell at League club
prices before non league may come?
It's a diversion from the the reality of this month, and the next three games.
It's very possible we may only get a couple of points and be very bottom two come 1/3/16.
I so hope not because going out of the league means probably more to us fans than those who own.
These are bad days,we must hope the team will deliver.

I thought Fry had basically retired to spend more time with his family anyway. At least that's what Gary Johnson discovered last year when he couldn't contact Fry to finalize a transfer, and the latter claimed it wasn't his fault, as his wife wouldn't let him use his mobile telephone while on holiday.

I await with great interest JFs utterings in his second and third parts interview to the WG. The supporters trust is a small but very important aspect of progressing the club in the broadest sense.
The gross mismanagement by the board is wholly unacceptable, and made worse by the staggering secrecy and changes of position JF keeps taking.
The 5-6 years of costly redevelopment plans are in my view, and always have been dead in the water. The club if it had any concern for its supporters, would have included a permanent replacement for the farcical....tent!!I love my YTFC club, and dearly want it to stay up, but the breakdown in the relationship caused by the club/board/JF is irreparable. Darren Way I wish well as he is saddled with the task of avoiding obscurity...
