25 December 2015 : Halfway House
Boxing Day marks the halfway point in the 2015-16 season, and once we have played our match against Plymouth Argyle, we will have come up against every team in our division exactly once, with the exception of the various cup competitions. Clearly where we are at present is a world away from where we intended to be, scoring just 13 points from 22 games and currently stuck in 23rd place in the table. I went through a lot of my thoughts on that situation when Paul Sturrock left the building, so I'm not going to repeat all that a second time.

The big question remains who the next manager will be who will be given the task of replacing Mr Sturrock. As I said a week ago, I expect it to be Darren Way, unless the team end up on the back of a pair of hammerings against Plymouth Argyle or Oxford United. In my mind that's been obvious since the day the club named Darren as the 'interim manager' rather than Terry Skiverton - if the board's principle goal was just to have someone to hold the fort for a couple of games then reversing the hierarchy of the two coaches would have been an odd exercise. They did it because - rightly or wrongly - they saw Darren as their "preferred" option, rather than to search outside the club, and it would not surprise me if they have not talked to any external applicants at this stage. That might make things a little bit awkward for them if they do have to consider a Plan B, but I guess we'll know soon enough if that happens.

Regardless of what the Board think, I suspect that for Darren's appointment to carry credibility with fans, he will probably need to win one of the two matches against Plymouth and Oxford - which given they're both top three sides is no easy feat! In normal circumstances getting draws against such teams would be good enough, but Darren has to show obvious signs that he is the man who can haul us away from the relegation zone. Had we beaten one of Barnet or Leyton Orient then that would have built up a record that strengthened his case, and would have been a more reasonable demand given Barnet's poor away record and Orient's recent loss of form. Sometimes football does surprise you in the way results pan out, but usually the wins come from teams down near the bottom or from those struggling for form, whilst the draws and the defeats come from those at the top.

That said, Argyle are struggling at Home Park lately with no wins in their last three so we may turn up and find the same sort of frustrated atmosphere that existed at Brisbane Road and be able to take advantage of that. However, the point that I'm making is that if Darren gets a win against Plymouth or Oxford then he'll probably get the job. If he doesn't, then by that time the club would be sixteen league games without a win. I think that run does need to be broken in that time.

Although we've yet to see the results - which will ultimately become the critical factor in any assessment - Darren has certainly tried to do things the right way from a psychological perspective. Everything is "positive", "good" and "changed". That will obviously only work for a limited period of time, but as a means of trying to invoke a clean break with what has gone before, any new manager would need to do that. Also, I'm not sure if it is deliberate or subconscious, but he has tended to introduce repetitive messages into his interviews - check out his pre-Boxing Day BBC chat and you'll find he talks about "needing to stay in the Football League" (or variations on that theme) no less than six times. Presumably this is the message being given to the players as well. It may not be the long term sort of ambition that we would hope for, but in terms of the 2015-16 season it's a necessary one - we are where we are and we have to hope that the second half of the season can get us 22nd or higher. The reasons for why the club has slipped so badly should be considered separate to the short term 23-24 games that we face right now, and that needs to be the case whether Darren is the manager or someone else.

The other major talking point amongst fans over the past week was Chairman John Fry's views on Supporters Trusts. There was an awful lot of invective in there, which suggests that he is either prejudging what the Trust may or may not seek to achieve, or misunderstanding what Supporters Trusts do and how they are governed. Taking each part of what John said:

1. "They say they can't communicate with the chairman. It is rubbish" - I have had a look through what the Yeovil Voice have put out, and I can't see anywhere that they've said anything that direct. They've chosen to refer to the state of the club as a whole, rather than directing anything at individuals. Furthermore, they've been clear that they have been communicating with the club in inviting representatives to their open meetings, so if anything they've been implying the opposite. It may be that someone at some point has said that the club is not communicating effectively, in getting its message out to its fans, but that's a very different issue - they should be addressing their 4,000 core supporters, and indeed the 20,000 who went to Wembley, and that can't be done by individual invites into the Chairman's office.

2. The "half a million pounds" references. This is probably the worst bit to have come out of John's interviews with the Gazette, in that it's prompted challenges, questions and later ridicule for what was said. In the two pieces the Gazette did, John is very crystal clear over what he is talking about: On December 12th he said "You have got to make a contribution to the club and the biggest one is money. We have an extra half-a-million pounds put in each year which is put in by the directors" whilst on December 19th he said "We put in half a million pounds a year, every year, to keep this club going. We can only work with the money we are given and if someone comes up with the money that is a different proposition."

To anyone who had read those pieces, it is impossible to see his words - across two separate interviews - as anything else other than claiming that 500,000 of hard cash was being put into the club out of the directors' pockets. It was only when fans cajoled the Gazette into going back a third time to ask for that figure to be broken down, that we started to get at the truth - that any "money" was an illusion, and that we were merely talking about time. Whilst I don't think anyone would play down the efforts of anyone at the club who is performing a role on a voluntary basis, the measurement is the number of hours they put into that task - and I still doubt that comes to "half a million pounds" worth of time! Any future owners of the club will need to bear that in mind if they take control of the club, but given that most lower league clubs rely upon such roles, I doubt that would shock anyone. However, this "half a million pounds" episode does emphasise the first point above - the club does need to communicate effectively - and honestly - with supporters if it is to get their buy-in.

3. "All these other things like planning applications are paid for privately". I think supporters would feel more comfortable if we knew who was funding the planning application, and what their motive was. On a number of occasions Mr Fry has referenced this, but has not divulged the name(s) of the people who are paying. It can probably be assumed that whoever is funding it has a vested interest in its outcome. Yet we need to ensure for the good of the Football Club that any decisions made about the viability of the application, or its supporting business case, are made by the club, and the club alone. By having an unnamed external party apparently funding the application, the risk is that it is driven by those person(s) in a direction that suits their needs, and not the Football Club. As we saw with the first planning application, when The Range's Chris Dawson stood up in a Council meeting and claimed that Asda wanted to buy land at Huish Park - a claim quickly disputed by Asda - it made you wonder who was leading the planning application - Yeovil Town Football Club, or Chris Dawson Superstores Limited.

4. "I have got seven long-serving directors who have been here for years. They are green and white and were supporters before they were directors". Given that Norman Hayward and Brian Willis are former Board members from AFC Bournemouth's days during the 1990s, this presumably isn't wholly the case. For some others, like Andy Rossiter, this clearly is true. However, with the others I haven't got a clue, because I don't know what they look like, what their background is or what contributions they are making to the Board. They may well be very gifted directors, who have been season ticket holders for years before that, but I suspect that most fans are like me and would not be able to give anyone any information about them. Assuming that is the case generally, then that's a gap in knowledge that should be filled.

5. "I have written to the Supporters Direct managing director - and not had a response". Mr Fry doesn't say when he wrote to Supporters Direct, but on the day the Gazette published his interview, I checked the Supporters Direct Twitter feed and they indicated that they were closed for Christmas and New Year. So there's a simple explanation. I did read that Mr Fry's missive to Supporters Direct had been copied to various Yeovil Town supporter groups (such as the GWSC). However, it had not been copied to the people behind the Yeovil Voice. If the motive behind the letter was to get further information on how a Supporters Trust would be governed, then the likes of the GWSC probably can't answer that - however the Yeovil Voice might be able to, in advance of any Supporters Direct reply. If the content of the letter was in a fit form for other Yeovil supporters groups to see it, then the Yeovil Voice should also have been copied in on it.

6. "I said to them (Supporters Direct) 'are you fit and proper?'". Supporters Direct have been in existence for nearly sixteen years. They were set up by the UK Government, and are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and before that the Financial Services Authority. They are run as a not-for-profit cooperative organisation, as a Community Benefit Society. If they were in any way not 'fit and proper' then the FCA or the various parties that fund Supporters Direct - such as UEFA, and the UK and Scottish Governments - would have stepped in years ago.

7. "Are you (Supporters Direct) going down and checking where the money is going?" Again another basic question, phrased as an accusation, that could be very easily answered. To give the facts very simply - at this moment in time, there is no Supporters Trust associated with Yeovil Town - it is in the process of being set up. As a consequence, there is no question of "where the money is going", because there is no money. In the future, any formally constituted Supporters Trust will produce accounts, and those accounts will be vetted by both Supporters Direct and by the Financial Conduct Authority. If they do not adhere to that, then the Trust gets struck off by the FCA. But whilst the Trust doesn't actually exist, this question is an irrelevance.

8. "The Green and Whites produce their accounts every year about every single penny they raise on these premises and we need that transparency". The GWSC are a very different body to that of a Supporters Trust, and in fact there should be no either/or scenario for the average fan. A supporter may wish to join both, and there should be no conflict in doing so. However, the GWSC stand as the club's Official Supporters Club. Any Supporters Trust is run independently of the club. In terms of the Trust accounts, they will be answerable to three parties - the Financial Conduct Authority, Supporters Trust, and to its Trust members. They may choose to publish those accounts online, or share them with the club, but there is no mandate for them to do so.

7. "What do they mean when they say hand the club back to the community? Have they got the money? If they haven't got the money they can't do anything". The actual words the Yeovil Voice used on their leaflet were "bringing back our football club to the community" - a much softer and spiritual statement of belonging, rather than a question of actual physical transfer. The gap between the club's hierarchy and the supporters' community is self-evident by the fact that these questions/accusations are being tabled through the press, whilst you only have to read some of the responses from non-football people within the Lufton and Brympton community to the club's planning applications to see that there are some quite ingrained views being expressed there, about how they see the football club at present. Anything that can draw all three together would have to be a good thing, however it's done. John repeatedly speaks of "money" here, but there is another currency out there - that of "goodwill" and closer communities are more willing to provide that.

8. "I have said to them (Supporters Trust/Yeovil Voice) four times to come in and have a meeting with the other groups". This feels like a contradiction in terms of the first bit I've picked out - if you're able to give four invites, then clearly you are communicating. I don't know what the responses to those invites were, but I will quote from the Yeovil Voice leaflet: "Remember: The Trust has not yet formed, there are no formal aims and objectives, only ideas. There are no official spokespersons, only supporters like you and I". Within that context, any invite to sit around a table with supporters groups would be inappropriate at this stage, because there is no-one who can represent a Trust, because it doesn't exist yet, and no-one has been elected. They would only be representing themselves.

9. "What is a community-owned club? Is it one part-owned by a supporters' trust? There are plenty of those across the country and I will give you one which has gone broke three times - Bournemouth. Three times they went into administration since I have been here and then they had a Russian who came along and the supporters had that golden share and they sold out". Firstly, because the Yeovil Voice states on their leaflet "there are no formal aims and objectives" it would be wrong to infer that they are seeking to wholly run the football club at this stage. I suspect that during the early months that would be an unrealistic aim anyway.

In terms of AFC Bournemouth's situation, it is worth knowing the following timeline with respect to the above claims. During the mid-1990s, they were under private ownership (including Norman Hayward's time as Chairman between 1991 and 1994) and Bournemouth's official website states in their history section: "The financial worries were always there and these came to a head in late 1996, early 1997. The receivers were called in and the future looked bleak as the extent of the mess was revealed. Supporters rallied and a trust fund was set up with thousands pouring in. Despite the support, Bournemouth were 15 minutes from closing down at one stage. With no benefactor to step in, Chairman Trevor Watkins, then in charge of the Trust Committee announced that the trust fund was going to bid to take the club over". So far from being the party that had caused Bournemouth's financial distress, Bournemouth's Supporters Trust were actually the group that saved their club from liquidation in 1997.

When their Supporters Trust took over the running of their club, they introduced a constitutional rule that gave the Trust a "golden share" that guaranteed them 51% of voting rights at the club, regardless of who was in control of the club at that time. In February 2007, new investors Steve Sly and Jeff Mostyn persuaded the Trust to hand over that share, in return of 750,000 of "investment" in the club, effectively handing the club back into private ownership. By February 2008, Bournemouth had entered administration a second time - a year after the Trust had ended their control over the club. They also didn't hand the club's ownership to Russian Maxim Denim - he only got involved in their club in 2011. So the facts are that Bournemouth's two (not three) administrations occurred during private ownership, and were actually book-ended by a ten year period when the Trust ran the club, during which they didn't. More fundamentally, if that Trust hadn't been galvanised as it was in 1997, then AFC Bournemouth probably wouldn't have existed in the shape or form that it does now, to enable a Russian to take over 14 years later.

As I see it, to try to divide the subject of football ownership into ideological terms of "Outright Ownership" vs "Supporters Trusts" vs "Something Else" would be wrong anyway. As with most business operations, there are good and bad examples of most models. What matters more is how the ultimate owners form their business plan, and how they interact with their customers/supporters. And in the case of the 'Yeovil Voice', it's still in its unformed infancy, so steering the conversation in that direction for now isn't relevant, as I see it.

Anyway, for now the actual football - in the form of Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United - will rightly take our focus. Hope everyone reading has had an enjoyable Christmas Day, and that things in 2016 begin to look a little rosier, one way or another.

Odd that Fry and Co, see the Supporters Trust concept a threat, when its aims and aspirations have not yet been decided on. Add on the experience of B'mouth and talk of 51% ownership in exchange for cash they must be terrified.

Still it will save them from having to stump up half a million quid every year - in so called sweat equity or otherwise..lol

Excellent and truly very much appreciated by me at my distance from HP. I am too weary of the JF diatribe which are now approaching being false statements to bother with his comments, but as green and white to the core will support any initiative like Ciderspace or Yeovil Voice.

As usual a compelling piece of forensic analysis that underlines the difference between the chairman's emotive soundbites and the actual facts of the case - all these soundbites usually succeed in doing is to further alienate the fan base. As I've stated in other articles - the split of the property asset from the football club leads to non-aligned interests and potentially conflicting agendas.

A very interesting and informative piece, which clarifies a lot of important points. I would also like to know what the 'ownership' of Yeovil Town FC really means. I was led to believe a few years back that the football club (team etc.) was severed from the land and buildings, which became the property of a Holdings company, is that correct? If so, then a Trust taking over the football club may not have any 'ownership' of the main assets (the real estate)in any event, so why is there such opposition expressed by the chairman?

The comments on DW etc I agree with. As I said in my comments on the last blog, his best chance for that job securing win was at home to Barnet and a draw was not good enough. Leaving aside DW's future that was a must win game in my view. However over the years Yeovil have a habit of winning away when you least expect it so fingers crossed. As for analysing what Mr Fry has said, I really don't see the point anymore of doing it as it smacks of tit for tat he said she said. I am in favour of a supporters trust and I hope it has a sensible approach to working in partnership with the club and building effective working relationships with key individuals it needs to influence.

Dusty - agree to an extent with the "tit for tat" thing. I think the Yeovil Voice output should just concentrate on what they want to achieve, as they will exist irrespective of what JF's views are on the subject. I'm just giving my own personal views on the subject though - I don't mind JF bigging up his own directors (although I'd like to know what they all contribute to the club!) but I felt that some of his comments about Supporters Direct and Bournemouth Supporters Trust, and the "half a million" claim went across the line, in that they were factually inaccurate. The problem is that because the Gazette prints all of this, without challenge or investigation and without allowing other parties to respond, there is a danger that fans reading the WG will believe some of what is there in print. So I think JF deserves to be pulled up on that. I think JF needs to accept that fans will be forming a Trust, and needs to work with them - I don't think the sort of things that he said to the WG will do himself or the club any favours.

This is an excellent, lucid, comprehensive and informative response to JF's recent comments.

If anyone has any doubts that JF is long past his sell by date compare the content of his recent statements with the content of this article which examines his statements point by point and carefully , objectively and fairly refutes them with factual information.

Congratulations and Gratitude are due to Badger for such a well written, timely and informative piece.
